Welcome to Pink-Tutu.com, darling dears! This is Emma, your resident time-traveling ballerina, ready to take you on another thrilling trip through the glorious world of ballet! This month, we're stepping back in time to 1st January 1911, and trust me, the dance scene was just as exciting then as it is now!
This is Post 3001 of Pink Tutu Travels, and if you haven't been following along, allow me to introduce myself! I'm a 20-something lass from the heart of Derbyshire, England, with a love for all things ballet - from elegant pirouettes to dazzling costumes and the captivating history of the art. My biggest passion? You guessed it! Pink tutus. I absolutely adore them, and it's my life's mission to spread the pink tutu love around the world!
How, you ask? Well, my dears, thanks to my incredible steed, Magic Meg β a magnificent shire horse with a sparkling pink coat, golden hooves and a magnificent white mane and tail β I travel through time, collecting stories, fashion inspiration and even some lovely vintage ballet items to fill my trusty leather rucksack!
And of course, none of this would be possible without the amazing ballet performances I give across the ages. The applause and joy I see in audiences keeps Magic Meg and me hopping from one time period to the next!
So, where did our journey take us on 1st January 1911? Buckle up, darling dears, it's a whirl of ballet delights!
Paris, the City of Lights, the Heart of Dance
Stepping into Paris on the first day of the year was like walking into a grand, vibrant dance. We visited the Opera Garnier, a majestic venue overflowing with history. Now, on that particular date, there was no ballet on the schedule, but imagine it! The famous stage where Diaghilev's Ballets Russes brought groundbreaking dances to life just months before. You could almost hear the music and feel the energy of those revolutionary productions!
I couldn't help but dream of dancing on that stage, imagining the delicate tulle of my pink tutu swirling in the warm Parisian air. A quick stop at a millinery shop ensured my outfit was truly Parisienne! The extravagant hats with delicate feathers and flowing ribbons were just divine. Perhaps they might have inspired one of the iconic costumes worn by the legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova?
A Peek at Anna Pavlova's Travels
Speaking of Pavlova, guess where she was this very day in 1911? Why, right in the middle of her sensational tour across the globe, spreading the beauty of Russian ballet to every corner of the world! Just think, she could have been gracefully swirling through London's Royal Opera House at this very moment, captivating audiences with her legendary roles in 'The Dying Swan' and 'Giselle'. What an incredible moment to witness, to feel the collective energy of the room as Pavlova commanded the stage!
And while I was dreaming about being transported back in time to watch her, a delightful shop owner showed me a rare programme from her 1910 tour, a treasure to add to my rucksack!
Ballet Beyond Paris: The United States Takes to the Stage
We couldn't leave Paris without making a brief detour to New York City. The Metropolitan Opera was already well established and enjoying a thriving season, presenting operas and ballets to a captivated American audience. Although the New Year's Day programme was purely operatic, I imagine the air was electric with excitement for the coming months of dance. It was exhilarating to walk past the stage entrance, envisioning ballerinas gracefully prepping for performances.
Ballet at Home: A Victorian Tea Party
Next stop, home sweet home, dear readers! Back in Derbyshire, we were ready for a bit of respite. The new year had already brought us into a new era, the 20th century! A steaming cup of tea and a lovely Victorian-era book on dance were all I needed for the perfect start to the year. This lovely old book is also heading into my rucksack, brimming with ballet history and wonderful Victorian-era illustrations of dance moves. I simply must share this with all my lovely readers!
