Hello lovelies! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travel! This month, we're waltzing back in time to January 1st, 1912! That's right, my dears, we're skipping right into the roaring twenties (well, almost!) with Magic Meg, my dazzling pink shire horse with the golden hooves and the mane and tail like spun silk. It's amazing what a good time travel steed can do for a girl's wardrobe, don't you think? ๐
As you all know, I love to gather stories from the past - especially anything ballet-related. This month, we're focusing on a date that, whilst not hugely famous in the world of ballet, did see the first public performance of The Sleeping Beauty, cue gasps. Not by the original choreographer, mind you, but the Imperial Ballet Company of St Petersburg (I mean, who wouldn't love a touch of Russia in the new year? )! Isn't that just fabulous?! This incredible performance, with a beautiful new set, transported audiences back to a world of magic and wonder - a little like our Pink Tutu Time Travel, but with less sparkly horses!
The Pink Tutu Chronicles - A Day In 1912
So, how do we time travellers even dress for an event like this? Luckily, fashion in 1912 was a treat for the eyes! The silhouette was still quite elongated and, thankfully, we had just left behind the ghastly Edwardian bustle, giving a little more freedom of movement, (though not quite enough for some fancy footwork!).
Now, my outfit had to be both stunning and practical! A delicate, pale pink tulle tutu, a perfect complement to the glistening snow falling outside - so wonderfully dramatic, wouldn't you agree? (I am, after all, a performer at heart, darling.) A silky, white chiffon top with a delicate pearl trim, just peeking out beneath the tulle, added a touch of demure sophistication. And my feet? Oh my, my feet! Glistening pink satin pumps with a delicate bow to match my pink tulle! The colour pink never lets me down. ๐
On my back was my trusty leather rucksack, overflowing with lace, vintage ballet magazines (those designs, my darlings, they just have so much character!) and even some of those fascinating paper dance records from the era - imagine keeping track of steps like that! Oh, the hardships of a bygone era! Just kidding, it was fascinating!
Ballet on the Globe in 1912:
Speaking of all that travelling, I also took a peek at what else was going on in the world of ballet that year:
- England: We have the delightful Royal Opera House in Covent Garden hosting, I kid you not, a performance of Swan Lake by the Russian Ballet Company - now THAT is a sight to behold, don't you think? Such beautiful storytelling through the movement!
- Italy: The Teatro alla Scala in Milan was ablaze with the captivating, The Little Red Riding Hood - you know, the story we all loved as children, brought to life in an enchanting ballet form. Just divine!
- France: In the charming Paris, a delightful production of Giselle took place, a poignant ballet filled with the delicate nuances of movement. How I would love to have attended such an amazing display of talent!
Ballet Dreams - A Message for You, My Dearest Readers:
Even with all that time travel, I found myself wishing I could share the wonders of this 1912 world with you all! The sheer joy of a live performance - it never gets old! My aim in life, remember, is to inspire everyone to don their own pink tutus! Imagine the fun!
So, what have we learned, dear lovelies? That ballet, like pink tutus, has a way of uniting us across time. From the elegance of The Sleeping Beauty to the sheer grace of Giselle - what an incredible adventure this has been!
Stay tuned for more Pink Tutu Time Travel, darlings! ๐ And until then, please do take a twirl or two in your own pink tutu - who knows what wonders await! โจ
Love and twinkling steps,
Emma
