Hello, darlings! It's Emma here, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, your monthly dose of all things ballet, fashion, and, of course, my whimsical adventures through time!
Today, we’re whisking back to the vibrant world of ballet on October 10th, 1925. The air is alive with anticipation, not just in the streets of Paris but all over the world. Because, darling, it’s the day the ballet world is going to be forever changed by the premiere of Les Biches, by Bronislava Nijinska!
Now, darling, imagine this! I’m at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees. It’s just as I love it – a touch of glitz and glamour, just the perfect place for the unveiling of a ballet with so much excitement surrounding it. A gasp rises from the audience as the curtain rises on a stage set of stunning pink and green - a veritable masterpiece of art deco. What's a time travel adventure without a touch of exquisite pink?
Les Biches tells a story about love, jealousy, and, of course, some beautiful dance sequences! Imagine – this revolutionary piece features daring modernist choreography that has never been seen before, exploring a much bolder approach to movement. And of course, all in my most beloved pink tutu, naturally! I think I could happily spend all my time just admiring these revolutionary dancers – the costumes are simply sublime, darling, with a sophisticated look of silken skirts, sheer layers and that utterly captivating Art Deco flair. Honestly, if we're talking about revolutionary fashion - that's one way to describe it, darlings, it’s about as glamorous and daring as you can get in the 1920s.
But my heart isn't just for ballet performances, darlings. I also love immersing myself in the world of dance classes! So, of course, I couldn't resist heading off to one of the prestigious dance studios in Paris. It's not quite as swanky as the theatres, but just as captivating. I can't help but wonder what secrets these hallowed halls hold and imagine the stories that echo through these classrooms, from whispers of legendary ballerinas to the rhythmic pounding of little ballet slippers tapping out their dreams on the floor.
Back on October 10th, 1925, I’m delighted to learn that Madame Nijinska herself has her own studio. Can you believe it? I just had to squeeze in a few lessons there, too. You'd think being a time traveller might make me the best dancer around - but these Parisian ballerinas have got the right moves. There’s such graceful precision, and each movement is simply infused with such passion, just beautiful. A ballerina is not a ballerina until she is in her favourite pink tutu! Even though we are in a bygone era, it feels like a beautiful world where pink still prevails.
And, of course, every great ballet adventure needs a great horse – enter Magic Meg! The magic Meg is a shimmery pink horse - think sparkle, glitz and glamour - and yes, my dear, her hooves are golden, I had them specially made! What better companion for a pink-loving time traveller could there be than a horse the same shade as a raspberry ripple sundae? And yes, just like my wardrobe, she’s fitted with the most adorable pink saddle - perfect for exploring all of the sights in all of the times.
Now, I just love a good shopping spree, and in the Paris of 1925, my leather rucksack just wouldn't stop overflowing with delightful trinkets from vintage ballet shops. Imagine silk pointe shoes that sparkle as though touched by magic! Or elegant satin ribbons that would make the most stunning bows, and oh, darling, a box of exquisitely hand-made costume designs - a touch of Parisian history for my personal collection! And of course, we have a full pink costume design in our special 'Vintage Ballet Treasures' section on my website, www.pink-tutu.com
Don't forget, my loves, to visit my website to view the stunning, historical fashion that is part of Les Biches – just picture the exquisitely feminine silhouette of those gowns! It’s just amazing! It reminds me of how ballet has always been about so much more than just the dancing.
Remember, dear ones, no matter where time takes you, it’s always best to travel in a pink tutu! And stay tuned for next month’s adventures. I promise it will be simply divine.
Until next time, remember to keep those pink tutus sparkling and dance with abandon!
Much Love, Emma
