Welcome, darlings, to Pink Tutu Time Travels! This month, I'm whisking you back to a glorious 10th October, 1933! Now, before we journey through time, a little something for you all - Post No. 3274 is here, freshly spun from the fluffiest of pink tulle, and ready to transport you to a bygone era.
This month, as you may have guessed, my travel companions and I are headed for the magical world of 1930s ballet! Let's just say that Magic Meg, my sparkly pink Shire horse with golden hooves and a mane and tail as white as fresh snow, is chomping at the bit.
Of course, I’m decked out in my most vibrant pink tutu - you can't time travel without the proper attire, after all! It's all about radiating those positive vibes and leaving a bit of pink sparkle wherever we go.
My trusty leather rucksack is brimming with excitement and ready to collect a heap of 1930s ballet stories and souvenirs to bring back for you all. And let's be honest, what's a trip through time without some fabulously fashionable items? I can't resist a touch of vintage glamour, and I already have my eye on some divine 1930s ballet accessories!
A Glimpse Into 1933: The Ballet WorldSo, let’s delve into what the world of ballet was serving on that day. Now, on October 10th, 1933, the ballet world was in full swing. There were so many thrilling performances and interesting events going on – let me tell you, I was in my element.
Let’s take a quick peep at some of the world's notable ballet events taking place:
Over in London at the beautiful Royal Opera House, the renowned Russian Ballet were mesmerising audiences with a rendition of "Swan Lake", starring the incomparable Alicia Markova. Can you imagine the grandeur of this show? Just seeing it in my mind's eye is giving me goosebumps! I can almost picture the shimmering costumes, the dramatic leaps, the graceful arabesques, the whole scene… I could quite happily lose myself in it, could you?
Now, as we journey around the world, let’s stop by Vienna for a moment. Here, we find the Vienna State Opera ablaze with excitement as their resident ballet company is performing a show entitled ‘Romeo and Juliet’, set to Sergei Prokofiev's beautifully emotive music. What a lovely, romantic piece to watch. Imagine the costumes, the music and the pure talent of these ballerinas and danseurs on stage. Pure, pure magic.
Across the ocean, we're also discovering that in New York at the Metropolitan Opera the celebrated ballerina, Anna Pavlova, had just announced the start of her North American tour. Now, let’s all raise a virtual glass of sparkling rosé to Anna - truly one of the most influential ballerinas of her time.
But that’s not all! It was also during this very special time in history that, in the depths of Derbyshire (where I, the humble Pink Tutu Blogger, call home), young ladies and gents were stepping into the studio at Derbyshire Ballet School, eager to learn the elegant and graceful art of ballet. The spirit of dance, that desire to express and move the body so beautifully, was already alive and thriving.
How wonderful that it's always been part of the Derbyshire culture and a beautiful form of self-expression across the world! My pink tutu-clad heart couldn't be happier! 🩰
Time Travel Tales: Fashion & ShoppingThe magic of time travel isn’t just about historical ballet – it's also about soaking up the fascinating trends of the time, discovering the most delicious restaurants, exploring the beauty of 1930s fashion, and, of course, shopping! After all, it's a truth universally acknowledged, a well-dressed ballerina must indulge in a little retail therapy, wouldn't you say?
Fashion-wise, 1933 had some incredible designs. Long, flowing skirts and shimmering fabrics with subtle hints of sparkle - now we're talking, darling! I can almost hear the swishing sound of silken gowns and velvet dresses. As for shoes, ballet slippers were definitely making their presence felt and taking center stage, both in the world of dance and the streets. I must confess I had a little fun trying on some delightful little 1930s shoes in a chic Parisian boutique - and let me tell you, they made my little pink tutu-clad heart soar!
While we were strolling along the Champs-Élysées, I couldn't resist treating myself to a delectable pastry from the legendary Ladurée patisserie. The sweet aroma of fresh vanilla, delicate floral notes of almond, and a hint of something tangy ... it truly transported me to the Parisian essence of the era. And for dinner, oh la la! My Parisian soirée concluded with a wonderfully elegant and whimsical meal at the Folies Bergère restaurant, known for its exceptional cuisine, delectable cocktails, and an aura of sophistication that made me feel utterly divine!
You’re probably all dying to know - what exactly did I snag on this incredible shopping adventure?
