Hello my darling ballet bunnies!
It's Emma here, and this month, Magic Meg and I are whisking ourselves back to a glamorous 10th October 1934!
Now, you might be thinking, "Emma, 1934? Surely there's not much going on in the world of ballet then?!" But my dears, oh my dears! Let me tell you, you couldn't be more wrong! It's a real whirl of pirouettes and pas de bourrées - and the pink tutu-wearing possibilities are just divine!
We arrived in London, where a wave of artistic excitement was rippling through the air, thicker than the famous pea-souper fog! It's a time of great innovation and exploration in dance - oh, the thrill! And of course, no trip to 1934 is complete without a little shopping!
Imagine the scene: London's streets are teeming with smartly-dressed women in chic hats and stylish coats. But wait - you know my motto: A tutu goes with everything! We're heading straight for Harrods and Liberty to check out the latest fabrics - I need to feel those sumptuous silks, luxurious velvets, and oh-so-charming chiffons, imagining them dancing in a beautiful, blush pink tutu!
Oh! And just the other day, I saw the most exquisite pink lace at Liberty! Perfect for creating the most fabulous little tutu for my next show - I might even wear it with a bejeweled belt! I can practically see it now!
Now, let's delve into what the world of ballet has to offer on this magnificent 10th October, 1934!
The Royal Opera House is bursting with excitement, ready to host the legendary Anna Pavlova! This time, she's performing Les Sylphides, which is absolutely adored for its ethereal and enchanting beauty. Pavlova’s brilliance and the magical choreography create a captivating dance that takes your breath away, all wrapped up in those shimmering costumes that just call out for a touch of pink!
Imagine that - the majestic, ethereal Pavlova gracing the stage, with a little bit of Emma-inspired pink to elevate the whole affair! I simply must get to one of her performances. And while I'm there, I need to soak up the atmosphere of that beautiful Royal Opera House, feel the buzz of the audience, and maybe even sneak a little peek backstage – with a touch of my own brand of pink, of course!
But that's not all! Across the Atlantic in the vibrant city of New York, there's more ballet excitement afoot. The Metropolitan Opera House is hosting its inaugural season! It’s a thrilling time for ballet in the US, with a grand opening performance of Romeo and Juliet by the famed Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, an absolutely captivating performance.
Talk about inspiration! To think of the vibrant colors, the grand stage, the dancers, the costumes! And you know I’ll be sure to weave in a bit of my signature pink for some additional glamour.
Of course, it wouldn't be a true ballet history blog without a little peek into the fascinating lives of dancers and choreographers who make our favorite stories come alive!
Did you know that the iconic Les Sylphides we saw in London is the brainchild of the brilliant Russian choreographer Michel Fokine? He truly is a master of graceful, romantic choreography, and Les Sylphides truly showcases his innovative ideas, revolutionizing the world of ballet.
Back in Derbyshire, I’ve been meticulously recording every detail in my ballet rucksack. The intricate lace of a tutu from 1934. The whispered stories about the great Anna Pavlova. The feeling of those lavish opera houses filled with such breathtaking beauty. These stories, these memories are a treasure trove of inspiration – and oh, how they'll inspire my next dazzling pink tutu!
Oh, my dears, how exciting is 1934? Full of glamour, creativity, and endless possibilities – just like a pink tutu, it embraces the best of both worlds!
Join me next month as I jump back on Magic Meg’s back and whisk us off on another exciting adventure through time! I have a feeling we might even stumble upon a charming French cafe … with some rather divine macarons, just my style!
See you then! And always remember: never forget the magic of a pink tutu!
