Hello my darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, your monthly dose of ballet history, fashion, and a whole lot of pink! This month, we're twirling back to December 12th, 1935 - a date bursting with ballet brilliance!
Now, before we hop onto Magic Meg's back and travel to the shimmering past, let's catch up on the current world of ballet. This past weekend, I had the most divine experience! The Royal Ballet was showcasing Swan Lake in all its glory at the Royal Opera House, and it was absolutely breathtaking. From the stunning costumes to the exquisite choreography, every detail was perfection!
Of course, after a show as glorious as that, a spot of shopping at my favourite ballet boutique in Covent Garden was a must! They had a collection of the most exquisite pink tutus - perfect for any budding ballerina. The colours, the lace, the glitter – it was simply irresistible. It’s been so lovely seeing everyone in London sporting a bit more pink. Maybe, just maybe, I'm getting closer to my dream of getting everyone in a pink tutu!
But now, back to our journey! Magic Meg is all ready and waiting to take us back to 12th December, 1935, her pink sparkle coat shining in the morning sun. I’m all packed up, too – my leather rucksack brimming with historical treasures. Let's ride!
We’re in 1935! London is bustling with activity. People are in their finest winter coats and the festive air is alive with the excitement of the approaching holidays. The grand dame of the London theatre world, Sadler's Wells, is brimming with activity! Today, December 12th, they are staging a special Christmas matinee of The Nutcracker by the Sadler's Wells Ballet!
I have to tell you, darling, The Nutcracker is quite a treat this season. The company is dancing their hearts out, full of holiday cheer and joyful energy. The choreography, though simpler than we're used to in today’s modern ballets, is so expressive and lively. You can truly feel the warmth of the story through the graceful movements of the dancers.
But this performance is not just about the dance, my love. It's about community, about spreading holiday joy! The audience is buzzing with excitement - families are enjoying a festive outing, children are gazing up at the stage in wonder.
During the interval, the theatre becomes a haven for delightful gossip and laughter, everyone chatting away excitedly. There are so many lovely outfits - the women are wearing beautiful fur wraps and glittering dresses, while the men are in their fine suits and ties. The festive spirit is simply contagious!
As I make my way through the crowds, I am particularly drawn to the beautiful ballerina outfits. Imagine - a light, flowing fabric adorned with shimmering crystals, catching the theatre lights like a thousand tiny stars. It is so inspiring, and I can’t resist purchasing a beautiful piece of fabric at a stall by the theatre - a soft, velvety pink fabric, just the right shade to evoke the enchantment of this special performance.
And then there are the shoes - ah, the shoes! They have these charming little bows at the toes, adding an extra touch of festivity to each graceful pirouette. My darling, they’re just perfection! These shoes are an absolute must for my rucksack, and the woman at the stall happily agrees to sell me one of the beautifully aged pairs. I imagine these little shoes gracing the stage just moments ago, telling the tale of a magic winter night with each delicate step.
My journey wouldn't be complete without a taste of the holiday festivities, so I indulge in a sweet, buttery Christmas treat – a steaming cup of hot chocolate topped with cream and sprinkles. The taste transports me back to childhood Christmases - the warm aroma, the sweetness lingering on my tongue – pure bliss!
Leaving Sadler's Wells with a heart full of festive spirit and a rucksack overflowing with treasures, I step onto Magic Meg, my heart alight with the memories of 12th December 1935. What an unforgettable adventure!
As we journey back to the present, I can't help but think how truly fascinating ballet history is. Every time travel journey teaches me something new, reminding me why I fell in love with this magical art form in the first place. And, I have to confess, this trip has fueled my love for the classic ballets, making me even more determined to get everyone twirling in a pink tutu!
Until next time, darlings!
