Hello my darling tutu lovers! It’s Emma, your resident pink tutu aficionado, ready to take you on another thrilling adventure through the wonderful world of ballet!
This month, Magic Meg, my pink-sparkling, golden-hooved Shire horse, has galloped us all the way to the 5th of May, 1962! My trusty leather rucksack is packed, ready for the fabulous ballet tales I’m about to collect. And oh darling, it’s a good one!
Firstly, let’s talk about fashion! This is an era that deserves a whole blog post on its own, but I’ll just highlight the fabulous. Think sleek, sculpted lines, the revival of the ‘New Look’, and a love affair with the colours coral, lime green and the must-have shocking pink (which you know, just gets my heart racing!) You know I can’t resist a bit of shopping when I time travel and you just know there will be a whole haul video later on my YouTube channel.
Now, onto the big event of the month. On this very date, the esteemed Bolshoi Ballet made history by bringing their exceptional performances to the Grand Opera House in Paris. Can you imagine, the Bolshoi performing on French soil?! It was a historic moment for international dance, marking a new chapter in the beautiful dialogue between countries through ballet. Just picture the dazzling costumes, the intricate footwork, and the sheer artistry of the performance. My dear, it’s making my tutu flutter just thinking about it!
What's more, this year saw the triumphant return of the Royal Ballet after their world tour. And guess what?! My fellow pink-tutu wearers, this means they performed Swan Lake and Giselle – two ballet classics! How incredible is that?! It’s a true reminder of the enduring beauty of classical ballet and its power to enchant audiences across the world.
This was also the year that Dame Margot Fonteyn – the ultimate ballerina queen - premiered The Invitation. I've been told she was so elegant and beautiful in it! That's why you see her picture all over the place! And just like you’re all reading this blog, The Invitation is getting its due spotlight and acclaim again! You see, ballet history, it just never goes out of style.
Of course, I wasn’t the only one swooning over ballerinas in 1962. This was the year that a whole generation of ballet lovers became completely obsessed with The Sleeping Beauty. Imagine my delight when I found this out, since I’m a self-proclaimed fan myself! The fairy tale-like atmosphere of this ballet still draws crowds in to its magical performances all over the world and I know the story just makes every ballerinas heart sing.
And finally, the most magical event I witnessed this month had nothing to do with famous dancers or famous productions. In a small ballet class tucked away in the heart of Derbyshire, I witnessed a young ballerina in a bright pink tutu – her tutu just slightly more pink than my favourite! – grasping for the first time the pure joy and excitement of movement through dance. It made me realize that ballet is so much more than elaborate costumes and breathtaking steps.
My darlings, ballet is an expression of human spirit, a story woven with every plie and jeté. And that is a message that travels across time, connecting generations of ballerinas, all with our own pink tutus.
I’m so glad you joined me on this journey, Now, let’s all dance, our pink tutus whirling and twirling in celebration of ballet’s enduring magic. Don’t forget to comment below and tell me what you think!
Love always,
Emma, your pink tutu obsessed blogger.
