Pink Tutu Travels: June 6th, 1962 - A Glimpse into the Ballet World

Welcome back, darlings!

It’s your favourite ballerina blogger here, Emma, with post number 3618 for your reading pleasure!

This month, I’m taking us on a whirlwind journey back to June 6th, 1962, and as always, I'm geared up in my favourite pink tutu and ready to explore the wonderful world of ballet from yesteryear. It’s no secret, darlings, I adore a time-hopping adventure, and with my trusty steed, Magic Meg (a truly magnificent pink sparkling Shire horse, golden hooves and all!), there’s no ballet era we can't reach.

Just picture it, a beautiful summer morning in Derbyshire. I’m slipping into my trusty leather rucksack (filled with vintage ballet treasures, of course!) and clambering aboard Meg, her white mane flowing in the wind. She’s got that twinkle in her eye, and she knows exactly where we’re going, darlings. Just a flick of the reins, a dash of pixie dust, and whoosh, we’re back in the 60s!

Now, imagine this: The world of ballet in 1962 is buzzing with activity! New choreographers are emerging, dancers are pushing the boundaries of technique, and the fashion… darling, it’s utterly divine!

A Night at the Royal Opera House:

This month's travels took me to none other than London’s Royal Opera House! Just imagine the magic: the exquisite architecture, the scent of lavender in the air, and the feeling of anticipation. Oh, and did I mention the dazzling costumes? Just seeing a glimpse of a ballerina’s meticulously crafted bodice and tutu transports me to a different world.

I settled in for a performance of The Sleeping Beauty. Can you believe it? A classical ballet, but with a fresh, innovative interpretation from the incomparable choreographer, Frederick Ashton. Ashton was, and remains, a revolutionary in the ballet world. The movements were elegant yet powerful, the music intoxicating, and the story - well, the magic of love and slumber was pure enchantment.

More Than Just One Show:

Now, this is one of the lovely things about time travelling. One day leads to another and before you know it you've spent an entire week learning and being inspired. That is exactly what I did! It's fair to say I had an absolutely marvelous time exploring ballet during this era, taking in various shows, attending ballet classes (can you believe, they even had tutus then! But I must say, my own, hand-stitched creation trumps any from 1962, don't you agree?) and catching up with fellow ballet enthusiasts at local teashops. The chatter about new productions and favourite dancers flowed freely, it was all just so… charming!

My Backpack: A Treasure Trove of Ballet Memorabilia:

My trusty leather rucksack is brimming with souvenirs from this fascinating time trip, darlings! A programme from The Sleeping Beauty, an autograph from the exquisite Margot Fonteyn, even a copy of Dance Magazine - oh, the iconic photography! It’s fascinating to see the ballet world of 1962 captured in such detail, like a snapshot in time.

But don’t worry, darlings, my love of the modern ballet world hasn’t waned a bit. I'm always on the lookout for exciting new shows, incredible performances and gorgeous costumes.

A Pink Tutu World:

My goal, as always, is to spread the joy and magic of ballet, inspiring everyone to embrace their inner ballerina! My personal philosophy? It's time to get pink, get twirling, and unleash your inner ballerina. Every single person, regardless of age or experience, deserves to feel the pure joy of dance, so slip into that gorgeous pink tutu, find your inner grace, and dance with joy!

Until next month, my darlings, remember to stay twirling, stay happy, and let your ballet heart shine. And don't forget to visit www.pink-tutu.com!

With love and twirls,

Emma xoxo
