Ballet Time Travels: 9th September, 1964 - The Glory of the Bolshoi!

Hello my lovelies! Welcome to the 3645th instalment of "Pink-Tutu", the world's only monthly blog about a pink tutu-wearing ballerina who travels through time! I’m Emma, your host, and I'm bursting with excitement about today's adventure – and, of course, it involves pink, tutus, and lots and lots of ballet!

As always, dear readers, we’re hurtling through time on the back of Magic Meg, my shimmering, pink-sparkling shire horse with those heavenly golden hooves. Oh, it's a joy to ride with her, her white mane and tail whipping in the wind as we sail through centuries!

Today's date is the 9th September, 1964, and the whole world of ballet is abuzz with excitement because… we're off to Moscow! Oh my, the Bolshoi Theatre! I just can't wait to see the legendary Bolshoi Ballet dancers perform. It’s said their technique is second to none, and I can hardly wait to see their precision and those jaw-dropping leaps. Did you know they have this exquisite golden chandelier that illuminates the whole theatre with pure glamour? It's absolutely mesmerising.

And while I'm there, I can’t forget my new, hot-pink satin tutu! It's perfect for a night at the Bolshoi. Just imagine: I'm all ready, my face painted with a soft pink blush, a pearl necklace gracing my throat, and, of course, my dazzling pink tutu fluttering in the gentle breeze, making me feel as delicate and graceful as a rose petal in a gentle breeze. It’s just a joy to twirl in it!

Speaking of glamorous looks, I’ve popped my trusty pink rucksack into Magic Meg's saddle. In it, I’ve already started collecting memories of 1964’s ballet world. There's an exciting program for tonight's performance - “Giselle” - an absolute masterpiece that every ballerina dreams of performing at least once in her career. You'll find photos and some scribbled notes about the costumes; oh, the creativity and details are quite astounding!

And while I'm on the topic of costumes, 1964 was a phenomenal time for fashion! The swinging 60s brought all sorts of fantastic and experimental designs! The new shorter hemlines were certainly making their mark in the world of ballet as well! They've made the movements appear much more dynamic and free-flowing – what a dream to twirl!

But it’s not just the Bolshoi that’s making history tonight. My oh my, the Royal Ballet are showing a fabulous production of "The Sleeping Beauty". Can you imagine! Such an exquisite and captivating ballet! I have a special little something in my rucksack, a beautiful brochure I found with photographs of the cast. Absolutely breathtaking!

Speaking of breathtaking, isn’t it simply marvelous that my pink tutu lets me feel part of all these wonderful stories? Each month I travel back through time, I feel the excitement, the emotion, the beauty of it all; I learn from the history of ballet and get to meet some extraordinary dancers! All thanks to my trusty magic Meg and a little touch of pink!

Oh, I must be getting ready to set off. See you all again next month for another adventure through time! I hope you enjoyed this journey with me. Remember to keep spreading the pink and the joy of ballet with me – it’s contagious, you know!

And always, always, embrace the wonder of the ballet!

Lots of love,

Emma xo
