Hello fellow Tutu Twirlers! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina, ready to whisk you away on another adventure.
This month, my magical Meg has carried us back to August 8th 1972! Oh my, it was a whirlwind of a journey. We landed right in the heart of London, where the city buzzed with the excitement of a summer evening. My pink tutu billowed in the breeze, turning heads and making me feel absolutely glorious. I just adore how pink always pops, regardless of the era!
My first stop? The Royal Opera House, of course! I'd heard about the upcoming performance of Giselle starring the legendary Margot Fonteyn. It's said that despite battling a hip injury, she captivated audiences with her incredible artistry. Now, that's dedication, right? I practically squealed when I got a glimpse of the showβs grand opening.
It was all so... Romantic Ballet at its best. I'd even purchased a gorgeous satin pink tutu at Harrods on our way here - it would be perfect for the era, complete with the romantic puffed skirt, adorned with lace. The shop assistants nearly fainted when I asked them to try it on!
This wasn't just about the performances, darling! I took my trusty leather rucksack (oh, I do adore the rustic feel of leather and pink, don't you?) and oohed and aahed at the costume sketches and designs by the wonderful Cecil Beaton. Imagine, those beautiful outfits!
Back in the heart of the city, we saw performances by the English National Ballet. It was quite an experience seeing the company showcasing their talent at the London Coliseum. My imagination danced to the rhythms of their classical grace.
The world of ballet, even back in 1972, was such a lively hub.
More Than Ballet
The day wasn't all about dancing, darling! We had time to soak in the vintage charm of 1972. I even indulged in a little window shopping at Liberty's. Imagine the exquisite floral prints and delicate lace fabrics they displayed, all in glorious colours. They just make me want to wear my tutu to a vintage afternoon tea party.
On the back of Magic Meg, we cantered through the heart of Notting Hill, stopping to watch buskers playing guitars on street corners and a delightful market bursting with colour. It was truly enchanting, a real glimpse of what life might have been like on that August day in 1972.
Of course, I collected some gems for my Pink Tutu time travel archives.
In my rucksack:
- A programme from Giselle at the Royal Opera House, featuring a picture of Margot Fonteyn - I'll proudly display this in my personal collection!
- A small hand-painted tin box full of candy floss - it just smells like a perfect memory!
A miniature, delicately handcrafted porcelain ballerina β how sweet and intricate! I can't wait to add her to my collection.
A Blast from the Past
1972 seems so long ago, yet the magic of dance resonates across the years. You can almost feel the energy of that time through the remnants of costumes, programmes and even snippets of music.
There's something so magical about wearing a pink tutu and transporting yourself through time, don't you think? And letβs be honest, every occasion demands a dash of pink.
Stay tuned, dear friends, as I explore more historical time-jumps every month, discovering all the amazing, sparkling wonders of dance throughout the ages.
