Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-wearing ballerina, and I'm absolutely delighted to be taking you all on a magical journey to a date that has always held a special place in my heart ā 5th May, 1987.
Now, before we whisk ourselves off on our grand adventure, let's just admire this glorious day's arrival. The air feels as crisp as a brand new pair of ballet shoes, the sky is a vibrant blue just like my most favourite tutus, and the sunshine feels like a hundred tiny kisses from a loving audience.
This time, however, Magic Meg's been a bit peckish. So, a quick stop at a rather grand stable in Derbyshire to munch on some delectable sugar cubes. And don't you worry, darling, I've been sure to pack my lovely pink leather rucksack with some sparkly tiaras and a couple of perfectly-pink feathered boas just in case I spot any exquisite creatures in need of a touch of enchantment!
Today, my dears, we're embarking on a truly special trip to the wonderful world of ballet in 1987. We're travelling through time to see some truly incredible dance productions that left their mark on history! Just imagine, the vibrant, captivating world of ballet through the lens of this fabulous era!
Speaking of that glorious lens, 1987 was a time of innovation, of pushing the boundaries, and a perfect storm of incredible performances to fuel our dance-loving souls. Now, let's grab a spot in the grandstand and I'll tell you all about it, darling!
The Ballet World on the 5th May, 1987
Let's start our adventure with a graceful dip into the world of classical ballet! The Royal Ballet was holding a gala performance at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden! Can you imagine? Me, whirling around in my pink tutu, watching some of the finest dancers in the world! The energy in that building must have been absolutely electric! I wouldn't be surprised if the tutus themselves had a little jiggle, would you? Just thinking about it makes me twirl with glee! And just a little bit of jealousy, darling!
Moving on, in a grand display of grace and virtuosity, the American Ballet Theatre's "Giselle" captivated audiences across the globe. This timeless masterpiece of romanticism was no doubt a captivating ballet extravaganza! The ballet had some pretty remarkable performances at the Metropolitan Opera House, I believe. How I long to watch the ballet with a front-row seat! I'd probably burst with pride in my gorgeous pink tutu as if I was the one twirling onstage!
Meanwhile, our continent-hopping tour is taking us further west to a vibrant performance by Ballet West in Salt Lake City, where the dancers graced the stage with "The Sleeping Beauty." The magic of ballet certainly swept across Utah in that beautiful fairytale of princesses and prince charming. Imagine all that pink and glitz, oh darlings! My pink tutu is nearly jumping off my body with excitement just picturing the exquisite costuming!
In a breathtaking display of talent, The Australian Ballet was performing "The Nutcracker" at the Melbourne Arts Centre - such a charmingly magical ballet and a truly wondrous festive delight, with ballerinas spinning and leaping like beautiful swans and soldiers battling against mice. Such enchantment and fun! Imagine the glorious costumes in an elaborate production! They might even be pink! I mean, why not? After all, we all need a bit of that pink magic in our lives, don't we?
And then, just when I thought this ballet whirlwind couldn't get any more amazing, I hear that my favorite ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov is gracing the stage in Paris! Itās a ballet by the renowned choregrapher, Maurice BĆ©jart, and it's none other than the awe-inspiring "Bolero". Such a powerful ballet full of heart, beauty, and of course, an abundance of fabulous tutus!
To add to our adventures in Paris, dear readers, the National Opera Ballet of France was showing Romeo and Juliet - an exquisite, beautiful, and poignant masterpiece. The tender and heartbreaking story was undoubtedly beautifully showcased by the talented dancers. Paris in 1987, oh darling, what a magical ballet playground!
And in London, a breathtaking performance of āSwan Lakeā was also on the roster! The beautiful white swans gracefully gliding across the stage⦠Just like Magic Meg's snowy mane! But let's face it, darlings, there is absolutely no way any swan could outshine my gorgeous, glittering, oh so pink tutu!
But wait, darling! The incredible adventures arenāt over! If you think my little pink heart couldnāt explode any more with joy, imagine this - a little gem tucked away at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna with The Bologna Opera Ballet performing their dazzling interpretation of āCinderellaā ! Oh, it's enough to make a ballerina squeal! This tale of dreams, and yes, of glass slippers, was brought to life with an exquisite dance vocabulary! I just love tales of princesses with happily ever afters, and I bet the tutu designs for this show were beyond fantastic!
The 5th May 1987! A day full of ballet, dance and beauty - oh my! I do love these historical journeys! Not only does it provide such an incredible glimpse into the world of dance, but it fuels my insatiable appetite for ballet fashion. Just imagine, the glorious costumes, the sparkle of sequins, the beauty of every pliƩ and pirouette! All woven into the fabric of this glorious day! And just remember, every graceful step, every perfectly timed turn is a little dance with destiny, isn't it?
The best thing about my adventures, my lovelies, is that they bring together all the aspects that fill me with joy. It's the magic of dancing, the glamour of a ballerina's life, the adventure of exploring through time, and the sheer delight of getting to share my love for the world of dance with each of you.
My little lovelies, remember that no matter where you are in the world, the pink tutu magic is waiting for you, so dance freely, dance with passion, dance with joy, and always, always remember, there's nothing quite as magical as the world of ballet!
Until next time, darlings!
Emma xo
