Pink Tutu Travels - Post 4100: A 2002 Journey through Time

Hello my darling readers! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood time-travelling ballerina, and I am absolutely bursting with excitement to tell you all about my latest adventure! This month, my trusty pink steed, Magic Meg, and I have been galloping through the time portal to August 2002 – what a thrilling time for ballet, and a whirlwind of fashion and fun!

You know how much I love a good ballet show, and in 2002, there was SO much to see. We took a pitstop in London, where the Royal Opera House was abuzz with the return of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake. I mean, come on, a male swan? It’s genius! It was like seeing ballet in a whole new light (no pun intended!), and it got me thinking about all the challenges faced by ballet pioneers. It really reinforces the point that we have to push boundaries and shake things up in the dance world!

Of course, we had to visit Derbyshire, my hometown. I was particularly thrilled to learn that the Derbyshire Dance Theatre was in its 11th year – imagine all the amazing performances they’ve given over those years! And let’s not forget the gorgeous Darley Dale Village Hall where I first caught the ballet bug. It's so lovely to remember where it all started.

Our time travel escapade wasn't limited to England. We even hoofed it over to France for a performance of Ballet National de Marseille, and oh my, it was magnifique! This renowned company was founded by the legendary Roland Petit, and it’s an honour to learn about the pioneering work of these incredible dancers and choreographers.

While we were on our ballet-filled jaunt, we couldn’t help but soak up the fashion scene. August 2002, oh, darling, what a fashion feast! It was a vibrant mix of bright colours, intricate patterns, and of course, the glorious revival of the baby doll dress – think feminine, flirty and so on-trend! We've all got to channel that 2002 fashion spirit with our tutus, don't we? Just imagine a stunning babydoll dress layered over a tulle tutu... oh, the dream!

Speaking of tutus, did I tell you about my incredible haul in the vintage shop in the French market? A blush pink tutu that's practically vintage itself, and it’s absolutely screaming to be worn on stage! It's like the perfect pink - so delicate and ethereal. The vintage silk is a little bit worn, just like the ballet dancer in it once was - that feeling, it really touches you!

As always, Magic Meg was the star of our journey, especially since her new pink-sparkly shoes really made an impact! Let’s not forget that it’s the magical journey of ballet, past and present, that fuels my time travel - and I am truly indebted to this magnificent creature! I just hope you all have enjoyed hearing about my travels, as I have always found that learning about history, and especially ballet history, enriches our appreciation for the world of dance today!

Remember, darlings, you can learn anything if you set your mind to it, just like Magic Meg has taught me. Let’s keep spreading the love of ballet and don’t be afraid to experiment! I'll see you all next month, when we'll explore the world of ballet in another thrilling time period. And who knows what sartorial wonders we might find next? Until then, keep dancing, darling, and wear that pink tutu with pride!

With love and sparkles,

Emma xx
