Pink Tutu Time Travel: A Dance Through Time - Post 4189 - 1st January 2010

Hello, darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, and welcome to another month of twirling through history on my trusty steed, Magic Meg. It's a new year, and I’m bursting with excitement to see what balletic delights this month holds! Now, settle in with a cup of Earl Grey (a touch of pink grapefruit juice is my current favourite addition!), grab a feather boa, and let's embark on a journey through time.

January the 1st 2010? Oh my, that feels like yesterday! (Although considering I'm just back from the Romantic Era, it might actually feel like a lifetime ago! ). But what's happening in the ballet world today, you ask? Well, just as I was wrapping up a fabulously frothy waltz in the Court of Louis XIV, back in my own time the American Ballet Theatre (or ABT, as the cool kids call it) was kicking off their Spring Season at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. How very exciting! And speaking of the Big Apple, they're also celebrating their 80th anniversary! (They might not have a horse like Magic Meg, but they're definitely going places! 😉)

It was also the year of the Royal Ballet in New York – can you imagine, a royal troupe across the Atlantic? Such glamour! And speaking of glamour, there was something exciting happening at the Royal Opera House: Giselle was returning, starring Natalia Osipova! Talk about iconic – Giselle is an absolute masterpiece and Osipova is an absolute force of nature! It must have been magical!

As I was gathering intel on this year's ballet highlights, a little feather boa tumbled from my bag - it must have fallen from a past adventure. Ah, the memories! Speaking of the past, let’s rewind to the day, shall we?

1st January 2010 – What Was Happening Back Then?

Just imagine: 2010. You could post photos of yourself wearing your favourite tutu on Facebook and people wouldn't call you strange. (They probably did, but at least it wasn't that weird. 🤪 ) It’s a time where tutus still sparkle, and social media hadn't quite turned into a fashion battlefield (yet, at least).

The 1st of January, a fresh start. Imagine starting the year with a magnificent ballet gala, something opulent and spectacular to welcome the New Year! And indeed, such occasions were probably happening somewhere, all around the globe, each stage aglow with the joy of ballet.

Here in Derbyshire, I might have popped over to The Buxton Opera House. Their Winter Season was always full of amazing things, and their “Ballet on Screen” screenings would have kept my inner ballet-enthusiast brimming!

What Would Emma Have Done on January 1st, 2010?

Now, you know me - Emma's all about making the most of life. And that means always indulging in a little ballet indulgence! So, I'd be doing my research! I'd probably spend the day delving into Dance Magazine for some juicy ballet news (remember Dance Magazine, my loves? It was practically a fashion bible!) Or perhaps I'd be lost in the world of ballet history, a good old-fashioned ballet biography or perhaps something by our beloved Noverre – always a good read for an elegant evening.

However, it wasn’t just all about reading! After all, a good dose of shopping for that perfect tutu is absolutely necessary! And it wouldn't just be for me; it would be a celebration of all tutus – all shades, all styles! Oh, and I simply had to have a cuppa and some dainty pink cake in the afternoon! 🍰

Emma's Style File: A Time-Travel Twist!

As you all know, my motto is 'always embrace pink!'. This was even more important back in 2010. While tutus still reigned supreme, a little splash of pink never hurt, did it? I might have embraced the balletcore aesthetic before it even was a thing – a soft, pastel pink sweater or a billowy pink shirt. (Think a little bit Audrey Hepburn, just with a pinker twist). And of course, my trusty pink leather rucksack would have been packed full of ballet essentials and a good, old-fashioned book on ballet fashion.

Now, imagine stepping into a ballet class back then – a beautifully lit, graceful studio. It’s 2010, the year of the resurgence of ballet shoes (remember, darling, before it was just “ballet flats”). Imagine all those graceful pointe shoes in perfect order, a reminder of that magical feeling of twirling into the air.

Ballet Past & Present

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to travel to another time? I love finding out about ballets from different eras, from the majestic tutus and extravagant costumes of the Romantic era, to the bold and exciting experimentation of the Modern era. Ballet is a journey through time – and my time travel with Magic Meg just makes that journey so much more delightful!

So, until next month, darlings! Don’t forget to visit www.pink-tutu.com for more ballet adventures. Until then, embrace the joy of movement, the magic of ballet, and always, always wear a pink tutu. It's the ultimate way to add a splash of glamour to any day, whether it's 2010 or 2023.
