Hello darlings, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet, Pink Tutu Time Travels! This month, my fabulous friend Magic Meg and I are whisking ourselves back to the 12th of December, 2009, a date brimming with ballet brilliance. Buckle up, my dears, as we’re about to embark on a time-hopping adventure you won’t forget!
It's post number 4188, by the way, for those of you keeping track! As usual, I’ll be chronicling our journey for www.pink-tutu.com - because every day is a celebration of all things tutu! This time, though, I'm particularly excited because not only is this month’s jaunt a date packed with theatrical delights, it also reminds me why my passion for the art form is just as strong as ever.
As always, before I hop onto Magic Meg's shimmering, pink saddle (you simply HAVE to see her gleaming golden hooves, darlings!), let me tell you all about the delightful ballet performances and events happening in the world of dance back on that momentous date!
Oh, the Places We Go!
Now, my little fashionistas, close your eyes and imagine this: the grand stage of the Royal Opera House, London. It's bursting with breathtaking dancers swirling in their finest tutus, bringing stories to life with each pirouette and graceful arabesque. Imagine a captivating evening performance of The Sleeping Beauty by the world-renowned Royal Ballet. That's exactly what you would have seen back in December 2009! Imagine how exciting that must have been, especially since The Sleeping Beauty has always been such a beloved ballet, so graceful and magical, don’t you agree?
What's New, Pussycat?
Of course, a true pink tutu devotee always needs to know what's happening in the world of ballet fashion! In 2009, there were a lot of interesting trends - for example, dancers were incorporating more abstract elements into their costumes. These experimental costumes and vibrant makeup techniques allowed for the ballet to really pop and dazzle on stage! I actually saw a breathtaking performance at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow back then - you should have seen the costumes, pure couture, darling! It was such a lovely mix of classic and avant-garde.
Speaking of costumes, do you know what else is exciting? Ballet was experiencing a renaissance back then! This era saw an exciting resurgence of interest in classical ballet and some really talented dancers making their mark. I am eternally grateful to my time-travelling experiences to have witnessed the blossoming of a new generation of ballet stars – those talented, graceful ballerinas, you know! I was so incredibly proud of the work they were doing.
Time Travelling through a Tutu
I have to say, back in 2009, everything felt very nostalgic, even romantic. The costumes and sets for The Sleeping Beauty I saw at the Royal Opera House were a vision of fairytale beauty – I literally could not take my eyes off the elegant swans and the gorgeous princess costumes, complete with sparkly tutus of course! They really set the stage ablaze!
But don't think that 2009 was only about traditional beauty. Contemporary dance was alive and well. I recall a particularly poignant performance by the Batsheva Dance Company that moved me to tears. The dancers' passion and incredible talent just leaped off the stage. This period felt very much about exploring a range of styles, giving ballet a modern edge – and that's what I love about ballet: there's always something new and inspiring to discover!
And then, the next morning, it was time for a little ballet shopping. I couldn't resist adding some sparkling ballerina shoes and a few pink tulle fabric scraps to my rucksack! It wouldn't be a true Pink Tutu Time Travel experience without adding a little bit of ballet magic to my collection, wouldn’t you agree?
So, there you have it, darling! My first-hand account of what ballet was all about in December 2009. Remember, lovelies, we're just touching the surface here. There's so much more to discover! Remember, darling, ballet is an endless source of joy and wonder. Let’s keep exploring!
Until next time, Emma
P.S. I can't wait to see which new adventures await in our next time-travelling escapade! What do you think, my dear readers, should we go to the Bolshoi or the Royal Opera House next month?
