Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveller. It’s the first of March and the world of ballet is positively buzzing.
It's hard to believe a whole month has whizzed by since I last wrote to you, but the days seem to fly when you're hopping through history on the back of Magic Meg. My oh my, that shire mare is truly a dream! She practically sparkles with pinkness and those golden hooves leave a magical trail wherever we go.
This month we landed in… well, it wasn't really a landing, more like a gracefully-executed leap through a swirling, pink vortex – a spectacular entrance worthy of even the most esteemed ballerina, wouldn’t you say? Anyhoo, we arrived smack-dab in the middle of March 2010, and boy oh boy, are things positively whizzing along.
The world of ballet, my darlings, was truly a spectacle. I have never seen so many talented dancers in my entire life! They moved like butterflies on stage, grace and fluidity dancing in perfect unison with the music.
My bag is practically overflowing with treasures – programme pamphlets, faded photographs of dancers with ethereal smiles, and even a charming sketch of a ballerina that a young artist, inspired by the performance, gifted to me.
Speaking of the performances, here's a peek into the thrilling ballet happenings from this month:
Oh La La, Paris! Parisian ballet lovers were treated to an exceptional production of "Giselle" by the Paris Opera Ballet, at the majestic Palais Garnier. It was a spectacular evening, showcasing the stunning talent of dancers like Aurélie Dupont. The whispers of "Bravo!" filled the theatre air as the curtain fell.
English Delight Back home in the UK, the Royal Ballet had a marvellous performance of "Swan Lake" at the Royal Opera House. Marianela Nuñez stole the show as Odette/Odile, her talent truly taking everyone’s breath away. The final grand jeté of Act II still shimmers in my memory, so light and ethereal it could have been the first bloom of spring!
Dancing with the Stars On the other side of the pond, in New York City, American Ballet Theatre showcased a stellar cast for their performance of "Romeo and Juliet." It's a classic ballet, darlings, with a dramatic story of love, loss, and tragedy. Every twist and turn on stage had me completely spellbound.
New and Innovative Ballet: A Revolution! It’s not all classics, of course. March 2010 brought with it a captivating ballet premiere. The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater debuted a new production, " Ode," in celebration of Ailey’s 50th anniversary. It was truly a groundbreaking moment.
Sharing The Magic You might be wondering why I travel all this time – to experience these spectacular moments firsthand, of course, but also to bring back the stories and inspiration to all of you! Because I truly believe every single person has a dancer within. The world, my darlings, needs a little bit of pink tutu magic in its life.
This month, in honour of March as International Women’s Month, I'll be holding a "Pink Tutu Day" event right here in Derbyshire. Join me in celebrating strong women in all their glorious, pink-tutu-clad glory! I can't wait to see all of your beautiful tutus – all the frills and flourishes are welcome!
Speaking of tutus, my darling, my favourite find from this month is a perfectly preserved tutu from 1880, its fabric so fine and light. It must have felt like a cloud on the dancer’s skin! This exquisite beauty is now resting comfortably in my leather rucksack, and will surely inspire me as I venture further into the future, collecting ballet magic along the way.
Until next month, darlings. Remember, every day can be a little bit magical! Stay fabulous, stay pink, and never, ever forget to embrace the dance within!
Warmly,
Emma,
