Hello my darling readers! It’s Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, back with another exciting escapade from the annals of ballet history! This month, we’re taking a trip to the magical world of 10th October 2011 – a date packed full of captivating ballet performances across the globe! Buckle up, darlings, and get ready to spin through time with me and Magic Meg, my pink-sparkling Shire horse, who is absolutely thrilled to be sporting a brand new pink-trimmed leather saddle for this trip!
Oh, how I adore time travelling with Meg. We set off early this morning, her hooves glittering under the golden sun, the dew sparkling like a thousand tiny diamonds on the grass. She carries my trusty pink rucksack, overflowing with notes on ballet fashion, programmes from past performances, and shimmering pieces of costume and jewellery I've picked up along our time-travelling adventures!
Now, onto the exciting news: I knew October 10th was going to be a special day when I glimpsed it on my antique calendar! Turns out, it was the perfect date to witness the elegance and artistry of the legendary Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow! They were premiering "The Bright Stream", a ballet by Dmitri Shostakovich and choreographer Felix A. Blumenfeld. Can you imagine, darlings, a piece so beautiful it was deemed ‘problematic’ in 1934? Imagine how sensational the premiere must have been! Sadly, we had to stay away from this one. I hear a couple of the cast had a little too much Vodka and the entire evening was disrupted with wild behaviour. Oh dear! Well, luckily I had a backup plan, so fear not, dear readers, we had an equally splendid evening!
From the Bolshoi, we galloped our way to the majestic New York City Ballet where their fall season had begun with an all-star gala! Talk about excitement! I heard tell that the entire evening was a glittering affair of elegant dresses and sparkling jewellery. Imagine, darling, I was practically weeping with joy. I love a good Gala! I particularly wanted to see “Rubies”, by the legendary Jerome Robbins, a piece that remains a ballet world favourite. Sadly, this event was out of our reach for a different reason, too many reporters trying to interview me and too many men attempting to lift me from my feet – no thank you! Not this girly girl!
Never fear, dear readers, the evening continued with a most fabulous event, a gala for The Royal Ballet! The programme boasted the “A Tribute to Sir Frederick Ashton” – this, I have to say, is a celebration worthy of the pink-tutu clad ballet history fanatic! This program has some real favourites, with "The Dream" by Ashton featuring designs by Oliver Messel! Now that's a designer that knows how to make a lady sparkle! He had me completely smitten, especially with "Sylvia" and "Les Patineurs"! Talk about elegance and spectacle! Oh my goodness, I must return to this period to find more of these lovely designs!
So you see, my darling readers, October 10th was quite a day in the ballet world. It reminds us once again that ballet truly transcends time and place, a universal language that moves, excites, and inspires. Remember, darlings, no matter where you are, let your love for ballet shine brightly, just like the golden hooves of Magic Meg!
Now, go forth, darlings, spread the love of pink tutus and ballet! Remember to check in for my next adventure next month. Until then, happy dancing!
Yours truly,
Emma, your time-traveling, tutu-wearing, ballet fanatic.
