Pink Tutu Time Travels: A Twirl Through Time – Post #4212

Hello my lovely tutu-wearing treasures! It’s Emma here, your trusty pink-loving time traveller, ready to whisk you off on another magical journey through the fascinating world of ballet history! This month, we’re taking a leap back to the enchanting year of 2011-12, a period bursting with balletic brilliance. Grab your pinkest tutu, darling, we’re off on an adventure!

My Fabulous Fashion Finds:

Remember, my dears, when I told you my mission was to get everyone rocking a pink tutu? Well, I’m here to say, 2011 was the year for it! Pink was HUGE! In fact, my fashion-forward spirit was tickled pink by the explosion of bubblegum hues on the catwalk, inspiring a trend for soft pastels across the globe. Pink was all over the runways, from Chanel's dazzlingly feminine dresses to the bold, architectural creations of Alexander McQueen. It’s safe to say pink was having a moment. I couldn't resist whipping up a new pink tutu ensemble to match - a flowing tulle skirt, shimmering bodice and even a touch of blush-coloured feather boa. And guess what? My time travels wouldn’t be complete without my trusty leather rucksack. It's overflowing with treasures, vintage ballet posters, a gorgeous silk scarf (you wouldn't believe the incredible print – definitely worthy of a dedicated post!), and a pair of delicately-crafted pointe shoes, hand-stitched by a renowned shoemaker from the era. What a treat!

Adventures in Time with Meg:

Of course, I wouldn’t be able to make these time travels happen without my faithful steed, Magic Meg, a sparkling pink Shire horse with golden hooves, a flowing white mane, and a tail as delicate as a ballerina’s tutu. Meg, with a gentle snort and a toss of her mane, transported me to 2011, and as soon as we arrived, it was like a ballet-lovers paradise! The air buzzed with anticipation, with every stage abuzz with thrilling premieres, innovative choreography, and the magic of dance unfolding before eager eyes.

Ballerina Magic in Motion:

In the world of professional ballet, 2011 was truly an exciting time! Some of my absolute favourites were on tour or in full swing on London’s stage:

  • The Royal Ballet staged an unforgettable revival of La Bayadere, a vibrant and dramatic spectacle that left me wanting to whirl into the centre of the stage myself! There were also phenomenal productions of Giselle and Manon featuring exceptional talent, captivating audiences with each performance.
  • At the Royal Opera House, The Sleeping Beauty was simply enchanting, with the breathtaking grace of Sylvie Guillem and the sheer artistry of Carlos Acosta, two of my all-time favourite dancers!
  • The English National Ballet put on an exciting and inventive performance of Akram Khan’s Gnosis, a powerful and captivating fusion of contemporary ballet and classical Indian dance.

Dancing Around the World:

We ventured out beyond the UK's borders, with Meg taking us to some amazing ballets in other corners of the world:

  • In the breathtaking city of Vienna, we watched the Vienna State Opera performing a vibrant rendition of The Nutcracker, with intricate sets, stunning costumes, and the most exquisite dancing I’ve ever seen. I was enchanted!
  • In New York City, I felt the energy of the New York City Ballet at their very best, dancing with a raw power and artistry. They debuted the magnificent Wonders choreographed by Justin Peck, featuring amazing choreography and costumes.
  • In Paris, we witnessed the beauty of the Paris Opera Ballet showcasing its graceful ‘Parisian elegance’. They presented a magnificent La Sylphide, a ballet that truly encapsulates the ethereal, romantic nature of French ballet.

And, a Personal Performance...

Naturally, my dear friends, I simply had to perform myself! I held a recital in the heart of Derbyshire, with the whole community turning out to witness the magic. My chosen piece? A vibrant, playful choreography inspired by the era’s passion for colour and femininity! I even designed a pink feather boa headband – simply divine, if I may say so myself. All in all, a most lovely evening!

Sharing the Joy of Ballet:

I want everyone to experience this extraordinary passion, so I’ve brought back an assortment of wonderful balletic treasures. Imagine: miniature porcelain ballet shoes for a beautiful collection, ballet themed art prints that exude elegance, and exquisite costume pieces, inspired by the exquisite costumes of the era. And, don’t forget my leather rucksack – bursting with stories! I’ve jotted down tales about my time travel adventures, ballet trends, famous dancers and backstage gossip, perfect for inspiring young aspiring ballerinas and sparking the love for ballet.
