Pink-Tutu Blog Post #4235: A Whirlwind Visit to 1913

Hello my darling readers!

Welcome back to the Pink-Tutu blog! November is here, and oh how I adore the crisp air and falling leaves. As a Derbyshire lass at heart, autumn is simply magical! It makes my mind wander to twirling around the countryside, with a fiery-coloured leaf in my pink tutu – a touch of whimsy for a brisk autumn day.

But, I digress! I promised to share my latest adventure through time with you lovelies, and oh what a spectacular jaunt it was! This month, dear readers, I found myself transported back to the year 1913! Can you imagine, swirling through history over a century ago?

My trusty steed, Magic Meg, with her sparkling pink coat and golden hooves, galloped through the mists of time, landing us in the heart of Paris – the beating heart of the dance world, then as it is now. It was a sight to behold!

The city was bustling, a symphony of horn honking and cobblestones clattering under horse-drawn carriages. People, all decked out in fabulous frocks and dashing hats, flitted around with an energy that made me feel right at home.

Now, for a dancer like me, this visit to the City of Lights wouldn’t be complete without some balletic explorations. Did you know that this very day, 11th November 1913, was a big day for ballet? The legendary Anna Pavlova, a real pink-tutu queen of the stage, graced the Paris stage in her celebrated performance of The Dying Swan, a delicate and captivating work. I simply had to see it!

Armed with my rucksack full of time-traveling paraphernalia and a hefty dose of my signature pink charm, I managed to gain access to the theatre – a beautifully-lit venue buzzing with excitement! Imagine, to witness Anna Pavlova’s ethereal grace in person! It was an unforgettable experience, so full of emotion. And just when I thought I couldn’t be more mesmerised, I even got to sneak backstage to see the intricate detail of her costume! A vision in flowing white, embellished with a shimmer of glittering crystals that brought to life the image of a fragile swan, its delicate beauty perfectly balanced with a quiet intensity. It was simply captivating!

But there's more! Did you know that Vaslav Nijinsky was also a contemporary dancer back then? I caught a glimpse of his style and flamboyance on this visit, but I have a feeling he's going to be a star who appears in future Pink-Tutu adventures! His dramatic presence is a legend even today!

Of course, what's a trip to 1913 Paris without a dash of shopping, darling? The boutiques overflowed with delightful fabrics and colours, especially shades of blush and salmon pink that I just had to incorporate into my time-traveling ensemble! I also discovered an enchanting shop filled with tutus of all sorts. There was even one, made of pink silk with a beautiful lace trim that would make a ballerina's heart melt! You bet I added it to my time-traveling rucksack for inspiration, darling!

While we're on the topic of outfits, can we talk about the fascinating fashion in 1913? The ladies were draped in luxurious silks and lace, with daring hats that boasted magnificent feathers. The men looked simply dapper, with suits and coats that whispered sophistication. Fashion in 1913 had its own elegance and charm. The gentlemen would even sport a feather boa and an elaborate bow tie, now wouldn’t that be lovely on a handsome gentleman!

Oh darling, don’t forget the ballet dancers! From their hairpieces to the exquisite silk pointe shoes, the women of the ballet were an inspiration to watch and learn from. I learned so much on my Parisian adventure about the details, from the intricate embroidery on a bodice to the dainty elegance of a dance tutu, which adds so much beauty to the choreography and allows for freedom of movement.

Every visit with Magic Meg through time is an enriching experience, and I can’t wait for our next journey! If you, my lovely readers, have any requests or ideas about where to travel, please, do leave a comment! Until next time, keep twirling and stay fabulous, darling!

With love and ballet bliss,

Emma x
