Hello, darling readers! Welcome back to my Pink-Tutu Time Travel blog! It’s Emma here, your resident ballet-loving, time-traveling, tutu-obsessed friend. This month, we’re stepping back in time to September 2014, and let me tell you, this was a month bursting with fabulousness in the world of ballet!
Firstly, let’s talk about my fabulous steed! You know Magic Meg, my shimmering pink Shire with golden hooves, her mane and tail like a cascade of snowy clouds. She was as excited as I was to set off for this trip, pawing the ground and tossing her head with impatience, the bells on her harness tinkling like the music of a hundred ballerina slippers.
We left our Derbyshire home in the crisp September air, the smell of freshly cut grass lingering in the wind, and zoomed through the portal that took us directly to… New York City, 2014! Oh, darling, can you imagine my delight? New York City! That epicentre of art, fashion, and of course, breathtaking ballet.
The air buzzed with the energy of a million dreams coming true, and a touch of that thrilling, fast-paced, ever-moving rhythm that characterises New York. As I rode Magic Meg through the throngs of stylish pedestrians, I felt that magical feeling, a sense of connection to this bustling, ever-changing, beautiful city.
Now, here’s a peek into my whirlwind adventure:
- A Date With Destiny at Lincoln Center: My first stop, naturally, was Lincoln Center, the jewel in New York's cultural crown. And wouldn't you know it, this was the month of the New York City Ballet’s Opening Night! The excitement was electric in the air as I slipped into my most beautiful pink tutu – the one with the delicate chiffon ruffles - and settled into my seat for an evening of magic.
This year's Opening Night gala was an unforgettable affair! The stage shimmered, a galaxy of light, as the dancers danced with precision and grace. I saw legendary ballerinas in all their glory, watched new stars illuminate the stage, and felt a deep joy at being a part of this extraordinary performance.
Behind the Scenes: My backstage adventures were simply divine! I even had the honour of chatting with a charming gentleman, the designer of some of the most breathtaking costumes, the likes of which I’ve never seen! His intricate work reminded me of the incredible craftsmanship and artistry that go into every single ballet.
Shopping Spree: Now, any time-traveling ballerina worth her salt knows that a visit to New York City isn't complete without a little shopping spree, darling! Oh my, the sheer amount of stores overflowing with elegant dance wear and delightful accessories! I snagged a pair of shimmering gold pointe shoes, the perfect addition to my collection, a luxurious pink silk ballet wrap, and the cutest pair of pink and white ballet flats for a touch of "New York chic" when I was off the dance floor.
Catching a Broadway Ballet: "A Chorus Line": Broadway is famed for its shows, and "A Chorus Line" truly embodied that Broadway magic! It was pure theatrical delight - vibrant costumes, captivating choreography, and heart-wrenching storytelling that touched my soul. I savored every moment, marveling at the skill and passion of the dancers, leaving the theatre with my heart soaring and my inspiration flowing!
Ballet Stories: You see, darling, this is what my backpack is for. My little leather treasure, my magic portal into ballet’s rich history. I tucked in a brochure of "A Chorus Line," a ticket stub from the Opening Night gala, a picture of the dancers in all their pink-tutu glory, and my own little drawing of a pink and gold ballet shoe – a souvenir from a most splendid journey.
As my New York adventures came to a close, Magic Meg and I took one last look at the cityscape, the towering buildings like sentinels standing guard over the city's energy. New York, I will surely return, you radiant beacon of creativity!
But that, darling, was just the beginning of my adventures. Stay tuned for next month's blog post, where we’ll be venturing back to… (insert a mysterious hint of the next time travel destination)
Until then, dance on, dream big, and may all your steps be in pink!
Your Tutu-tastic Friend,
Emma xx
