Pink Tutu Time Travel Blog: Post #4278: June 2017, a Whirlwind Tour of Ballet History! 🩰✨💖

Hello my lovely ballet-loving darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-clad time-traveller, back from a whirlwind trip through ballet history. This month, June 2017, has been particularly dazzling! Oh, the performances, the costumes, the incredible stories I've collected! And of course, all this fantastic fun was made possible by my loyal steed, Magic Meg – a stunning pink, sparkling shire with golden hooves and a mane and tail like spun moonlight!

Now, where did I leave off last time? Ah, yes! It seems we're on a mission to inspire everyone to wear a pink tutu – wouldn't that be fabulous? Every month, I hop on Magic Meg and we travel to different times and places to see how ballet has evolved over the centuries. This time, our journey took us all over the globe, from the Parisian ballet halls to the vibrant, theatrical stages of Russia. What a treat!

Before we begin our journey, a quick peek into what’s on the ballet world stage today, June 2017. Oh, how I wish I could be there right now! In New York, the New York City Ballet are captivating audiences with a gala performance of "La Bayadère," and across the Atlantic, the Royal Ballet in London is delighting everyone with their production of "Swan Lake" featuring Marianela Nuñez, who always leaves me speechless!

Here in Derbyshire, we have the wonderful "Derby Theatre" showing “Giselle”. What’s on where you are this June? Let me know in the comments below! 💖

A Fashionable Whirl Through History

Firstly, June was the month for the English National Ballet to premiere a truly spectacular version of "The Sleeping Beauty", choreographed by the extraordinary Wayne McGregor, a choreographer who is truly pushing the boundaries of ballet. The costumes for this ballet were breathtaking – imagine sparkling layers of lilac and blue, reminiscent of dreams and fantasy, all with beautiful contemporary details. And the beautiful choreography of *McGregor’s “Woolf Works" * was equally dazzling – pure poetic movement set against an enchanting score!

Speaking of ballet costumes... I know many of you are as obsessed as I am with those fabulous tutus and intricate shoes. You should have seen the intricate lace bodices and fluffy tutus at a beautiful performance of “The Nutcracker” in Vienna this month – such an elegant and romantic story brought to life through such exquisite dancing!

From Vienna, we traveled across the Atlantic to the New York City Ballet, which celebrated the legendary George Balanchine. Now, this choreographer is a true pioneer! You must know, Balanchine’s "Serenade", a breathtaking study in beautiful movements set to Tchaikovsky’s haunting score, was simply breathtaking.

On The Stage with a Shimmering Shire 🐎✨

Magic Meg, our loyal, shimmering shire horse, galloped us through time, and what a whirlwind journey it was! First, we stopped in Paris, home of the Opéra Garnier, for an awe-inspiring "La Bayadère". The grand scale of the Paris Opéra has never been replicated anywhere else in the world, so imagine that vastness – with all the glitz and glam of a breathtaking set inspired by the Indian Maharajahs.

We then visited the historic Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where the legendary dancer Nikolai Tsiskaridze, “The Emperor of Russian Ballet", as he’s often called, is captivating audiences with his vibrant dancing style. We all dream of being ballerinas, right? But seeing these extraordinary professionals, like Tsiskaridze, move with such effortless grace is simply astounding!

In June, it's the Russian season and the Bolshoi is making history by inviting choreographers from around the globe for its festival *“Dance Open." * Now that is truly groundbreaking!

Imagine... the incredible, colourful costumes, the sheer energy and power of the dancers on stage! The whole city seems to vibrate with excitement. It was a magical moment I’ll never forget!

And of course, every journey ends with a delicious cream tea - something I consider a ballet must-do after an exciting trip back in time! 💖
