Hello my lovely Tutu-lings! 💖 Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, your monthly dose of ballet history, fashion, and fabulousness! It’s your girl, Emma, and this month’s journey takes us back to February 2018 – a time of exquisite ballets, stunning performances, and a whole lot of pink tutu-loving!
Before we get swept away by the magic of this month, let’s give a warm welcome to my trusty steed, Magic Meg, the most beautiful shire horse you ever did see. Her pink shimmery coat sparkles under the sun, and her golden hooves leave glittering trails wherever she goes. With her flowing white mane and tail, Meg truly is a magical sight, and without her, I couldn’t travel through time to share all these amazing ballet moments with you! ✨
This month’s adventure is going to be extra special because I've got my leather rucksack ready to collect some amazing ballet treasures – a little snippet of this enchanting month, carefully preserved just for you. Remember, darling, it’s all about collecting memories, just like precious jewels, to share with you. So, hold on tight, dear Tutu-lings, because we're about to step back in time!
London's Ballet Buzz
It's February 2018, and London is brimming with the intoxicating magic of ballet! We start our journey at the Royal Opera House, where The Royal Ballet are showcasing their dazzling talent in “La Bayadère”. This legendary production is full of exquisite choreography, breathtaking costumes, and enough dramatic tension to make your heart race! Oh, how I long to see Natalia Osipova swirl across the stage! Imagine, a vibrant tableau with all the glamour and extravagance of a 19th-century Indian temple! It simply makes you want to spin like a whirling dervish yourself!
Speaking of captivating performances, The English National Ballet at the London Coliseum is taking us to a fairytale realm with “The Sleeping Beauty”. Oh, how I love those romantic ballets with charming princes and enchanted princesses! Can you imagine all those beautiful costumes – those delicate tutus, and those shimmering bodices! I'd have a shopping frenzy for them! 💖
Now, if you're looking for something a little more contemporary and a touch playful, head over to Sadler's Wells Theatre! This February, Rambert Dance Company is premiering a new work called "Second Breath" by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui! A little experimental and daring for a ballet, but just what the doctor ordered for those who want something truly unique. The sheer creativity and contemporary choreography will surely make you want to dance with wild abandon!
Across the World in Tutu
We can't talk about February 2018 without taking a trip across the globe to the American Ballet Theatre in New York City. Can you imagine the grandeur? The electrifying energy! I would just be completely overwhelmed by the amazing costumes, especially those in “Giselle”, the classic Romantic ballet. My oh my, the flutter of a delicate white tutu and the flowing gowns will send you straight to dreamland. And those stunning costumes - those flowing skirts and dazzling jewels! It's pure theatrical enchantment.
Of course, no ballet trip is complete without a visit to Paris, the city of love, art, and, of course, exquisite tutus! In February, the Paris Opera Ballet was dazzling the crowds with a production of “Don Quixote” - an explosion of vibrant colours, breathtaking leaps, and comic twists and turns! I love how ballets take us to other worlds, even those in 19th-century Spain! Those costumes are divine, especially the dramatic red and gold hues – I could write an entire post dedicated to "Don Quixote" outfits!
Back in Derbyshire, Ballet's Still Got it!
Remember, ladies, a love for ballet is a worldwide passion, even in our humble Derbyshire! Our own ballet schools and dance studios were filled with passionate dancers in February 2018! This month, the Derbyshire Dance Academy held their annual showcase - a true testament to our love for the art! Seeing those young hopefuls twirling and leaping in their pink tutus filled my heart with joy! It’s these local performances that truly remind you of ballet’s magical power.
And for those of you in Derby and its surrounds, there were ballet classes and workshops going on across the city. I'd imagine little tutus dancing like crazy! Now, what about this: if I went back in time, would I set up a pink tutu-wearing ballet class for little girls? What a fabulous idea!
More than Just Ballet: A February Filled with Sparkle
It’s not just the magic of ballet that we’re celebrating this month! February is all about embracing those delicate feminine things, those sparkling details that add a touch of glamour to our lives. I'm talking about fashion, of course! Can you believe how much ballet fashion has evolved since February 2018? Imagine what tutus were like in the 19th century! I can't wait to grab some of those stunning costumes for my collection! And just like a ballerina's grace, shopping for pink tutus and all things sparkly is always a joy! 💖
