Hello, my dearest tutu-loving friends! Emma here, ready to whisk you off on another magical journey through time, all from the comfort of my little pink-tutu-laden blog! Itās a crisp, clear March day here in Derbyshire, and Iām just brimming with excitement to tell you all about my latest time-travelling escapade. This month, weāre going back to the 3rd of March, 1729. Now, buckle up because this oneās a real gem!
Before we take the plunge into the past, a quick update on my current world: my performances at the Buxton Opera House have been going fantastically! We're playing to packed houses, and even though my āpink tutu" number isn't quite in the official program, it's certainly bringing smiles and laughter from the audience! The pink outfits, with their intricate detail, definitely capture their attention. After all, a pink tutu always goes down a treat, am I right?
Now, let's get back to time travel. My faithful steed, Magic Meg, the most glorious pink-sparkling Shire horse with golden hooves and a mane as white as freshly fallen snow, was pawing the ground impatiently. With a wave of my magic wand - well, okay, itās a sparkly pink feather boa, but it works the same - Meg whisked us away through time and space, landing us in the middle of London! I swear, Meg actually manages to pick up her hooves at each magical swirl!
The year is 1729, and the London ballet scene is bustling. Think elaborate gowns, wigs as big as a pillow, and ballet performances in private theaters. Can you imagine?! I've got to admit, even a girl who loves a good twirl was a little shocked at how much ballet has evolved since then! The movements were so formal, so strict! It was fascinating. But guess what? Despite those structured movements, they had these brilliant, playful court balls, with waltzes and gavottes. And that's where I saw my chance for some real fun.
Now, remember how I told you I carry a little leather rucksack on my travels? It's overflowing with items I collect from the past to inspire my future ballet creations! And thatās where I found myself in a proper flurry of excitement: an absolutely divine, silk, silver embroidered bodice, perfect for my next āpink tutuā performance! Just imagine: the soft whispers of the fabric, the sheen of the silk. It will simply shimmer on stage. I couldnāt resist adding it to my collection!
It seems everyone, including King George II himself, was dancing! The Londoners were thriving, indulging in the rich elegance and tradition of their time.
As for ballet⦠this era wasn't quite a "ballet" era in our modern sense. More of a "masque" era with grand movements, playful theatrics, and a heavy emphasis on posture and gesture. You know, it reminds me of that vintage film, "The Red Shoes", where we get those glimpses of ballets from different eras. I love how those vintage dance styles influence modern pieces.
One of my highlights, though? Discovering the first public ballet in England! That was a HUGE moment for ballet as a performance art form! Imagine that, people watching ballet performances, not just within private aristocratic homes but on actual stages! And, of course, that little fact went straight into my notebook!
The evening wore on, and Meg pawed the ground for our departure. It's funny how, when it's time to leave, the clock seems to fly by, but that evening flew by anyway. It was simply enchanting. My collection of ballet tales grew by tenfold, I have my new, silk, silver bodice for my performance and, my dearest readers, I have a renewed appreciation for the foundations of this magnificent dance art form.
As we flew through the heavens back to Derbyshire, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the journey, for the lessons learned, for the beautiful silk I found. And for Magic Meg, my dearest travelling companion.
Iām already thinking about next monthās journey. Where will we land? I wonāt tell you quite yet!
Until then, remember, ballet can take you anywhere, from Derbyshire to ancient London, from our time to centuries ago! And remember, everyone deserves to twirl in a pink tutu!
Until next time, dear readers!
Emma
