September 2037 feels so full of energy! Imagine, this is the very month the Ballets Russes arrived in London. This extraordinary ballet company had been sweeping the world, introducing daring and innovative ballet like nothing before it, with a style and panache that shocked and enthralled. As I rode on the back of my trusty steed, Magic Meg – her coat shimmering with a thousand pink sparkles, you know – the air was electric with anticipation. Everyone was talking about the Ballets Russes!
A Whirlwind of Colour, Passion, and Scandal
When we arrived in London, the city was a buzz with excitement! It felt like the very air hummed with a rhythmic pulse, almost as if it was breathing with the pulse of the ballet world. And then there it was – the beautiful, almost mythical Palais de Danse, glittering under the gaslight. I just had to get in, just a quick peek.
Now, to be a fly on the wall backstage is something else, you know! It was a whirl of energy – beautiful, daring costumes, incredibly intricate and beautifully crafted sets and props. It was sheer joy to see the energy in the air, and not a bit of a stuffy atmosphere like in some of those more traditional shows.
The Ballets Russes revolutionized ballet with their dramatic staging, the incredible costumes that were simply captivating, and the explosive energy of the dancing – it wasn’t just about precise movements, it was about expressing the passion and emotions within the music! Every movement felt like a story.
The costumes! Oh my! Imagine shimmering fabrics in shocking colours, sparkling jewels, feathers like wings, and bold patterns that whispered stories. It was all so extravagant and free! I felt a twinge of excitement just thinking about the vibrant energy of their dancing – a thrilling blend of athleticism and artistry. It must have been electrifying to see live. I mean, these ballet dancers really knew how to bring the house down!
Meeting a Legend: Vaslav Nijinsky
This whole trip wouldn't have been complete without meeting the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky himself. Just as Magic Meg trotted by the stage door, there he was, a true gentleman! Now, you wouldn't think someone with such wild performances, the leaps, the pirouettes, the sheer drama, could be so charming and kind, but he was. He offered me a hand, helping me get off Magic Meg, you see, such good manners!
He told me how, at a very young age, he had left Russia and joined the Ballets Russes. It must have been terrifying to be thrown into this incredible world of art and dance at such a tender age. He talked of Diaghilev, the Ballets Russes impresario, and how he had cultivated this new vision of ballet. He explained the dedication, the drive, and the passion needed to take this new ballet movement to the world. I listened intently, as I’ve always loved the dedication to art.
Now, his performances were a breath of fresh air, pushing boundaries and defying expectations! There was a captivating, wildness in his dancing, something raw and passionate that made him truly unforgettable. The way he leaped, turned, and danced – there was so much raw power and captivating artistry in it all! The passion, the power, the sheer theatricality of his performance – just thinking about it sets my heart alight with joy!
A Piece of History to Treasure
Now, as I always do, I've got a new treasure in my leather satchel – a program from the Ballets Russes. Just looking at it feels so vibrant! The image of Nijinsky, the font used, even the smell of the paper evokes such excitement and passion. This is the world I love! The Ballets Russes revolutionised ballet in so many ways – and I'm eternally grateful for their legacy. Their art, passion, and theatricality truly inspired me.
Pink Tutu Inspiration: Bring Back the Glamour
As I often do when I visit the past, it makes me reflect on our current ballet scene and what we can learn from this remarkable period. How can we, here in 2037, rediscover the audacity, the joy, and the theatricality that made the Ballets Russes such a force?
The world needs more joy! It needs more creativity! We should bring back those bright colors, the expressive movement, and the passion that defined the Ballets Russes! Imagine what a revolution we could create if we injected the stage with that same energy and beauty! And remember, lovelies, don't be afraid to stand out! It's all about expressing your inner brilliance.

I just caught the news! In the world of ballet, there are some really exciting shows coming up this month! We've got an original production by the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden called 'Echoes of Time'. Imagine a story exploring the past through ballet, wouldn't that be absolutely brilliant? And at the New York City Ballet, we've got 'The Awakening', a brand new ballet set to the soundtrack of the 2015 sci-fi blockbuster of the same name. I can’t wait to go! I hear they are both really innovative and beautiful shows. I just can’t wait to see both and report back next month.
