Pink Tutu Milan: #128 - Ciao Bella! (Wednesday 19th November 1997)

"Darlin's, it's me, Emma, back from the land of fashion and fabulousness - Milano!"

You wouldn't believe what a whirlwind this trip's been! Imagine a world where even the tram conductors wear a stylish touch of pink – that's Milan for you! I just landed back from a show at the Teatro alla Scala, and oh my goodness, it was like a fairytale! It had everything – grand opera, dazzling costumes, a soaring chorus, and even a couple of twirls in there for good measure! (Though I wouldn't dream of competing with those professionals – their artistry is just breath-taking.)

But I'll get back to the show in a bit, first let me tell you about this amazing city! Milano – what a stunner! From the moment I stepped off the train, the streets practically buzzed with a vibrancy and energy that swept me off my feet! It's like everything in this city just works – from the smooth, shiny red trams that weave through the cobbled streets to the way even the most crowded markets manage to keep their charm and warmth. It truly feels like every little corner of Milan holds its own story.

My love for pink and tutus doesn't seem to have been a barrier at all. In fact, Milan's like my pink tutu heaven! Imagine my delight when I discovered this quaint little shop called "Le Petit Tutu." Filled to the brim with the most beautiful ballet shoes and tutus imaginable! I walked out with the softest, most luxurious pink tutu I could find - it even shimmers in the light! It's my new "lucky" tutu for my shows - think good vibes, gorgeous stage presence and even better audience reaction! You know, if my dance doesn't steal the show, then my tutu definitely will! 😉

But my fashion frenzy didn't stop there! I found myself in a delightful shop filled with handcrafted jewellery – sparkly earrings, delicate necklaces, you name it! I picked out a stunning, delicate silver necklace that goes beautifully with my new pink tutu. I call it my "Pink Tutu Necklace." It's got that "prima ballerina" vibe! I even spotted a darling shop with all these chic handmade clothes and felt compelled to get myself a pink silk scarf - it goes splendidly with the Parisian feel of this city, don't you think? It's these little details, you know? The subtle shades of pink, the chic yet graceful charm, it just whispers to my soul!

My favourite thing about Milan, though, is the food. I tried the most decadent panettone - sweet, fluffy, with a little hint of citrus, perfect for a post-show treat. They say the Italians have a special way with pasta, and boy were they right! Every bite is like a symphony of flavours! (Don't get me wrong, I still adore my Yorkshire pudding!)

Speaking of "post-show treats," I did say I went to see a ballet show! Now, my darlin's, this one was a special occasion - Teatro alla Scala! Can you believe it?

Imagine this – the iconic red plush seating, the soft murmur of whispers before the show, the lights dimming, the overture swelling, and then… silence! The ballet began with such grace and poise! They were the epitome of grace and precision, each move like a whisper of beauty, so incredibly graceful and expressive! I even almost felt myself tapping my feet and swaying along to the music, haha! But remember darlin's, this isn't your local ballet school, it's the heart of opera and ballet in Milan.

The story of the show was about this heartbroken princess (no spoilers!), who ends up finding love again after learning to let go of the past. Such a classic romantic ballet, it really reminded me why I fell in love with dance in the first place. It was truly magical! And seeing that "La Scala" inscription gleaming at the top of the stage - it just gave me chills! It's definitely not something I'll ever forget! I even did my best pink tutu impression in the lobby before it ended - the other audience members looked a little bewildered at first, but after a few cheers from other tutus fans, I felt I made the night that bit more magical!

After a whirlwind of fashion and culture, it was time to head back to England. I stepped on that train, exhausted but exhilarated. The train journey is so calm, I even snuck a power nap and got to my new favourite pink travel blanket all cozy. You know, they say travelling is good for the soul, and it truly feels like Milan filled me with an entirely new perspective!

So darlin's, until next time, wear your hearts on your sleeves (or on your tutus!)

Stay glamorous, stay fabulous, and keep on twirling!

Emma x

P.S. I'm also thrilled to share a little tidbit with you all! My next big ballet performance will be in Derby in just two weeks! Mark your calendars, darlin's! You won't want to miss this special performance. And don't worry, my pink tutu will be ready to take centre stage!

**(1830 words later...Emma continues writing... It's almost midnight...She keeps going with stories, her tutu's, how much she loves travel...)

Now for some other things about Milan that you have to check out!

Here's a list of all the must-see places in Milan that make this city such a gem:

  1. Teatro alla Scala: This stunning opera house is the cultural heartbeat of Milan. Catch a performance and be swept away by the grandeur and history of this iconic venue.
  2. Duomo di Milano: A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the Milan Cathedral is a stunning sight to behold. You could spend hours just gazing at the intricate details of the facade, and the views from the rooftop are incredible! It's also a fantastic spot to indulge in some delectable street food and people watch!
  3. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II: Imagine a giant glass-vaulted arcade filled with luxury boutiques and charming cafes – that's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This historical masterpiece is like stepping back in time with an air of luxury and elegance, and it's definitely a must-visit! I've spent hours wandering this shopping paradise!
  4. Castello Sforzesco: A charming medieval castle in the heart of Milan. Step inside and be transported back to medieval times – it’s filled with amazing art and sculptures. But the best bit is the view of the park and city surrounding it. It’s a serene contrast to the bustle of Milan, a place to breathe, reflect, and take in the views of this amazing city.
  5. Pinacoteca di Brera: A wonderful art gallery with some of the best Italian paintings and sculptures from different eras. I particularly loved the Veronese paintings!

The Best Way to Travel:
Take it from a pink tutu-loving ballerina, the tram and metro system are truly fantastic in Milan! They are so clean and easy to use! It’s just the easiest and quickest way to get around the city and explore! And it's the perfect opportunity to see the city’s personality – imagine – red and gold trams whizzing around and stylish locals just casually strolling by with shopping bags – so elegant!

Here's a tip for you travel buddies! Invest in a comfy pink tutu, darling, because you are going to walk A LOT in this gorgeous city! The cobblestone streets and grand squares of Milan beg for a touch of pink and twirls - even just to have fun! I’m serious - walking the city feels more magical in your own tutu! Just do it - you'll thank me later.

Now for a little bit more on those pink tutus, darlin's!

My aim, my life's mission if you will, is to get everyone wearing pink tutus. Every time I meet someone wearing one I feel a little bit closer to reaching this goal - it’s a mission I hold close to my heart, and one that fuels my passion for dance, travel, and fashion. It’s so much fun to be in Milan and witness the different ways this beautiful city wears its tutus, its fashion! It truly speaks to the individual spirit of each and every person. And who knows - maybe someday soon, every shop on Via Monte Napoleone will be bursting with pink tutus, each a different style for a different personality!
