Pink Tutu Milan - Post 129: Ciao Bella, Milano!

Buongiorno, darling darlings!

It’s Emma, your favourite pink-loving ballerina, signing in live from the dazzling city of Milan! Today, as we are finally past the mid-point of November (and that dreary darkness), let’s just say my mood is as sparkly and colourful as the Christmas decorations starting to pop up around the city. I'm thrilled to be in this glamorous city, known for its fashion, food and – oh, what joy – ballet!

For those who’ve just joined the pink tutu parade, this is Pink Tutu Milan – my weekly blog dedicated to bringing you a slice of fashion, ballet and adventure, straight from my travels! This week, the spotlight is on Milan, a city I’ve been wanting to explore for ages. And what a perfect time to do it than now! November in Milan means vibrant colours, festive lights, and a palpable buzz in the air – everything a fashionista's heart desires!

Now, a bit about my journey. As you know, I fund my ballet adventures by performing, and this trip was no different! I performed a graceful (hopefully) rendition of Giselle with the Derbyshire Ballet Company last week – a wonderful show that always warms the heart. Then, it was off to the airport, packed with all the fabulous new additions to my wardrobe (a bright pink velvet bag - couldn’t resist!), and I waved goodbye to the English drizzle.

The journey itself was an absolute dream – a breezy, comfy ride on the train through the Italian countryside. I indulged in a delectable croissant, sipped on the strongest cappuccino imaginable, and gazed out of the window as the scenery morphed from lush greenery to picturesque vineyards and charming villages. Truly, this part of the trip is one of my favourite aspects - taking a moment to breathe in the magic of each location.

Now, let's talk about Milan! I'm staying in the cutest little apartment right in the heart of the city. It’s so full of character - high ceilings, terracotta floors, and a beautiful balcony overlooking a bustling street filled with little trattorias and lively laughter. My favourite spot? Definitely the balcony, with its colourful view. I could spend hours sipping my morning cappuccino, taking in the energy of this amazing city.

I landed here on Wednesday, so it's been a whirlwind of exploration, ballet and, of course, some indulgent shopping. The streets are like a fairytale, with dazzling shops brimming with luxurious leather goods, stunning jewellery, and irresistible clothing. Oh, Milan, you’ve got me hooked! I’m already planning my next trip… I might need to rent a larger suitcase next time, as it seems my shopping addiction is blossoming like a sunflower.

My mission, of course, is to immerse myself in Milan’s ballet scene – and I'm excited to share some highlights with you. I attended the most wonderful ballet performance last night, held at the Teatro alla Scala. I simply adore this venue – a beautiful historic theatre with a magical aura. They put on a beautiful performance of La Bayadère, with an elegant set design, elaborate costumes, and some incredibly skilled dancers. The energy in the theatre was electric, with everyone swaying to the music and applauding the talented performers.

But I'm not just here for the professional performances, no sir! Today, I spent the morning at a charming ballet studio tucked away in the quieter part of the city. You know, I think it’s something quite magical about the little side streets and alleys – there’s always something unique to discover in each one.

This little gem of a studio was filled with vibrant colours – lots of pinks and lilacs – of course, very welcoming! I joined in a drop-in ballet class with a fantastic instructor who taught a wonderful mix of classical techniques and more modern movements. She was such a beautiful dancer and her passion for ballet truly shone through. We had a brilliant session – I was quite the hot mess of sweaty grace, but it felt fantastic!

Now, you've been patiently waiting for this: The highlight of my day was indulging in a magnificent lunch. I sat on the bustling patio of a quaint Italian cafe, sipping on a glass of sparkling prosecco and indulging in a dish of linguine carbonara - pure Italian decadence. As I nibbled my pasta and enjoyed the bustling city around me, I realised that this is truly the magic of travel - letting yourself get swept up in new cultures and new flavours, soaking it all in with the pure joy of discovery.

There’s a reason why Milan is often called “the fashion capital of the world”. I don’t know where to begin… it is seriously bursting at the seams with trendy shops and glamorous boutiques – but my oh my, it’s an exciting and a vibrant scene!

Oh, I did get asked a question earlier: Does everyone in Milan wear tutus? And my answer is, well... not quite yet! But I am trying my best! Every time I head out for the day, my tutu makes an appearance, I walk into shops, restaurants and museums, twirling and dazzling everyone I meet with a bit of pink tutu magic. After all, why not spread some joy and let your inner ballerina shine?

My goal? Well, I aim to make this pink tutu a household name in Milan – imagine! Imagine the stylish Milanese strutting through the streets in vibrant pinks and silky tutus… One day, that’s what I dream of.

It's Friday today and I have a fun packed schedule. First, I will be getting a bit glam with a visit to one of Milan’s amazing beauty salons. Now, you know that hair and make-up always go with my pink tutu, right? (What's more, I discovered an incredible lavender shampoo yesterday that's going straight into my basket)!

Later on, I'm attending a charming little cabaret in the evening, a performance that promises music, magic and, you guessed it, more pink!

Then, Saturday I have some time set aside for one of my absolute favourite things… a relaxing day in the most magical setting – The Museo del Novecento. I’ll soak in the beauty of modern art, take some captivating photos and simply relax in the quiet amidst the masterpieces.

This week, I am learning that Milan has more than just fashion and ballet - the city bursts with culture, history and stunning architecture that makes it one of the most captivating cities I've ever visited. This vibrant metropolis keeps me on my toes with its constant energy and the incredible experiences around every corner. It feels a bit like home – except with lots more shopping!

Now, let's end with some Milanese magic – this Saturday, on the 26th, the city will come alive with one of my favourite events: The Milano’s historic and magical Fiera degli Oh Bej! Oh Bej! is back, and oh darling, what a joyous sight it is! A vibrant outdoor Christmas market – all those colourful lights and handmade crafts and delightful treats. I'm planning to be there, taking in the sights and sounds, picking up a unique gift or two for my family, and sipping on warm gluhwein (a definite favourite of mine in this festive season).

Until next Monday, darlings, keep dancing!
