Pink Tutu Milan: Post 141 - "Buongiorno Bella!"

Wednesday, 18th February 1998

Buongiorno from Milan, darlings! It’s Emma, your favourite pink tutu-clad ballerina blogger, writing to you live from the heart of Italy. I’m absolutely smitten with this city – the energy is electrifying, the fashion is outrageous, and the architecture is simply stunning!

It feels like only yesterday I was saying goodbye to the rolling hills and charming countryside of Derbyshire. That said, Milan is a stark contrast to my bucolic beginnings. There’s an undeniable buzz in the air here – a sense of excitement that gets your blood pumping and your imagination swirling. And to be perfectly honest, I’m living for it!

I’ve been in Milan for a few days now, and already my suitcase has reached bursting point. I’ve been on a serious shopping spree! I couldn’t resist picking up a gorgeous new silk scarf at one of the charming vintage boutiques tucked away on a cobbled side street. The print is utterly divine, and the silk feels as smooth as a baby’s skin. You just can’t find quality like that in your run-of-the-mill department stores, you know?

Speaking of silk, I've stumbled upon a truly sensational fabric shop nestled among the bustling market stalls in the Navigli area. It’s chock-full of the most beautiful silks, satins, and laces imaginable – an absolute haven for a creative soul like mine. It’s not even an exaggeration to say I could spend hours just gazing at the rainbow of colours and textures! I couldn’t leave without a little something for my new sewing project, though I’m keeping it a secret for now. You’ll have to wait and see what I conjure up with those gorgeous fabrics!

Of course, no trip to Milan would be complete without indulging in some seriously good Italian food. Last night, I savored the most divine pizza at a little trattoria I found tucked away near the Duomo. It was absolutely mouth-watering - thin, crispy crust, fresh mozzarella that stretched like elastic, and the perfect amount of basil to make it sing. They even offered a vegan cheese option, which I know some of you will be delighted to hear!

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention… I saw the most fabulous ballet show yesterday!

It was a performance of “La Bayadère” by the Teatro alla Scala – simply breathtaking! The set was extravagant, the costumes shimmered under the spotlight, and the dancers were utterly mesmerizing. They moved with such grace and power, every gesture telling a story. You could feel the passion and emotion radiating from the stage. I’m no stranger to a good ballet, mind you, but I have to admit this performance took my breath away. The combination of the powerful choreography, the beautiful music, and the sheer artistry left me feeling exhilarated. It’s these kinds of performances that really make me appreciate the magic and beauty of ballet – a timeless art form that transcends language and borders.

Onward to Ballet Class

Speaking of magic and beauty, today I'm attending a ballet class right here in Milan. I know it might sound crazy to squeeze a class into a jam-packed sightseeing schedule, but let’s face it, there's no better way to unwind after a day of exploring than a session in the barre. It’s my favourite way to release any built-up energy and refocus my mind – and of course, a little dance practice never hurts!

There’s a charming little studio just a hop and a skip away from the beautiful Piazza della Scala, and I can’t wait to see what it’s like. My guess is it'll have all the charm of a classic Italian studio - the warmth of a sunny, terracotta tiled room, the soft tinkling of the piano, the intoxicating scent of leather and polish from the dancers’ shoes. Ah, the sheer romance of it all!

Of course, I’m looking forward to the dance itself - those graceful stretches, the strengthening power of the barre, and the sense of satisfaction you get when your muscles burn just so. Then, it'll be time to perfect some elegant pirouettes and soaring grand jetés, always with the goal of mastering that effortless yet captivating style I'm trying to cultivate.

And yes, I will be wearing my pink tutu! Honestly, darlings, how else could I possibly take a ballet class? A girl's got to maintain her identity, after all. Plus, let's be honest, my tutu will probably make me stand out among the crowd! It will make an excellent talking point, a chance to encourage those shy souls who haven't discovered the joy of swirling around in a fluffy confection yet.

Adventures in Milan - More to Come

I’ll tell you more about my dance class in my next blog post. Right now, it’s time to head out and explore this stunning city some more! I’ve already found myself at home on the Milan tram, riding its well-worn routes, peering out at the vibrant city streets as it hums along its tracks. There's a magic in those journeys, a fleeting moment where you catch a glimpse of real life. From the chattering crowds bustling through Piazza della Scala, the dapperly-dressed men and women enjoying their leisurely strolls through Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, and the young couples embracing on street corners, I feel like I’m constantly getting a new perspective on life in this extraordinary place.

And let's not forget about the art of street performances. I have seen the most amazing street performers - from clowns who make children (and adults!) laugh hysterically to musicians with voices that make your soul soar. It’s a real testament to the artistic spirit of this city.

The streets of Milan truly offer an incredible showcase for the creative spirit. This weekend, there’s a performance I’ve been eager to catch – a contemporary dance performance at the Teatro Nazionale. It sounds utterly fascinating - an exploration of the human body and its capacity to move and express itself through the language of dance. You can be certain I’ll be in my front-row seat, my pink tutu twinkling under the stage lights, soaking it all in.

Later this week, I plan to spend some time exploring the magnificent art galleries here. I’ve heard whispers about a hidden gallery tucked away on a quiet side street that houses some incredible works of modern art. That sounds like my cup of tea, darlings! I can't wait to see what hidden gems I might stumble upon.

There's just something about the atmosphere of a gallery, the silence broken only by the whispers of admiring art lovers. And as a little side note, I might have to treat myself to a new pink scarf. Perhaps one with an artistic motif, or a bold design that celebrates the world of modern art! I can just imagine it, nestled around my neck, adding a touch of Parisian chic to my ensemble.

I’ll keep you updated on my latest adventures in my next blog post, dear reader! Until then, make sure you send me all your questions, wishes, and requests. And please, if you haven't yet embraced the glorious pink tutu, what are you waiting for? It’s never too late to twirl into a world of vibrant fashion and unabashed joy. Remember, life’s too short for dull outfits. Embrace the pink!

And for those of you who've never visited Milan, I highly encourage you to add it to your list of must-see destinations! It’s a city that has something to offer everyone – fashionistas, art lovers, foodies, and those seeking a vibrant, exciting escape. Just don’t forget to pack your pink tutu, darlings.

Ciao bella!

Emma x
