Pink Tutu Milan: Post 170 - Ciao Bella! From Derbyshire to the Duomo with a Touch of Pink!
Wednesday, 1998-09-09
Buongiorno, darling readers! Emma here, fresh off the train from Derbyshire and ready to share my adventures from the fashion capital of the world - Milan!
It's been a whirlwind journey already, and believe me, a pink tutu can definitely turn heads as you weave your way through the crowds! I'm feeling particularly vibrant this week - it's the Italian air, I tell you! I've been sipping espressos like a true local (three, to be precise), and even attempted some broken Italian in a pastry shop, much to the amusement of the staff. The language might be tricky, but I managed to get a gorgeous chocolate croissant, so all's forgiven.
Before we dive into Milan, let's rewind a little. As always, I'm here in this glamorous city thanks to the magical world of ballet. Last week, I was dancing with the Derbyshire Ballet Theatre in a production of Swan Lake - feathers, pointe shoes, and tutus galore! The audience loved it, and that, my darlings, is what fuels my wanderlust.
It was a bittersweet goodbye to my Derbyshire home, leaving the fresh air and rolling hills for the cobblestone streets of Milan. But travel is my passion, and let's be honest, who could say no to this fabulous city? And yes, you guessed it, my suitcase was brimming with pink tutus in every shade imaginable! I had to pack for a week of performances, shopping expeditions, and a special appearance at a street ballet event on Piazza Duomo - I'll tell you all about it later!
My first encounter with Milan was quite magical, honestly. Imagine this: arriving at Milano Centrale station, sun setting, casting a golden hue over the bustling crowd. I spot a scarlet tram, its bell ringing, a scene straight out of a film! I couldn't resist climbing aboard. The conductor, a charming gentleman with a thick moustache, smiled at my tutu. I might just be a touch eccentric, but this city seems to embrace it.
As the tram rumbled through Milan, I took in the architectural wonder. From the gothic grandeur of Duomo, a breathtaking masterpiece with its intricate spires reaching for the sky, to the chic, contemporary buildings lining Corso Buenos Aires - I was captivated by the contrasting styles.
The day I arrived was just perfect for a little afternoon shopping adventure. Milan, my dears, is a haven for fashionistas! The air buzzes with style, and the boutiques... well, let's just say my credit card was sweating!
But first, coffee! I stumbled upon this tiny, family-run cafe near the Teatro alla Scala - a historic theatre renowned for its breathtaking architecture and, of course, world-class opera performances. Imagine, sipping my espresso while a whisper of music floated through the air. Pure magic.
I treated myself to some seriously stunning Italian shoes, a chic pair of black loafers with delicate gold accents that I'm certain will pair beautifully with every shade of pink tutu imaginable. My inner ballerina couldn't resist the allure of the vibrant, colourful dresses at Corso Buenos Aires - I had to bring home a touch of Milanese flair! The vibrant yellow, perfect for the Italian sun, just begged to be added to my collection. The shops were bursting with creativity and sophistication - and I just had to try it all on!
Speaking of tutus, my shopping spree couldn't have been complete without a visit to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a majestic shopping arcade adorned with stunning mosaics. Here, I found the perfect tulle - shimmering, delicate, and perfectly pink! It was a steal, and you know me, a girl can never have too many tutus, especially when it comes in a colour as bold and cheerful as pink!
Later that evening, I finally indulged in a delicious Italian dinner. I settled on a traditional pizza with mushrooms and pesto. A heavenly experience! And of course, a glass of Italian wine was the perfect accompaniment.
Then it was time to step out and soak up the vibrant nightlife of Milan! I strolled along the Navigli canals, admiring the cobblestone streets and the beautiful architecture reflected in the water. The sound of laughter and music mingled with the gentle lapping of the water. This city truly embodies the "La Dolce Vita" lifestyle!
Oh, I almost forgot! I met this fantastic dancer at a little ballet studio near Duomo! Her name is Elena, and she's a real Milanese star - she knows all the best spots for pastries, ballet classes, and shopping deals! I swear, this girl knows everything about this city!
It seems my trip to Milan is about to become even more fabulous. Elena invited me to Piazza Duomo on Saturday for a street ballet performance - I just had to say yes! It will be amazing to share my passion for ballet with this city!
I know I haven't yet mentioned the real reason why I'm here - I'm performing in a ballet recital at Teatro alla Scala on Saturday night! It's an incredible honour, and my nerves are already tingling with excitement. You can be sure I'll be showcasing a breathtaking, show-stopping tutu for this momentous occasion.
So stay tuned, my dearest readers. My Milan adventures are just beginning. Until next Monday, may your week be filled with twirls and a healthy dose of pink!
Yours in pink, Emma
