Pink Tutu Milan: Post 176 – 1998-10-21

Buongiorno bella!

Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where tutus are always pink and the adventures are endless. It’s Emma here, your trusty travel companion and fashionista, back from Milan with another vibrant week of ballet, shopping and the city that never sleeps – or at least, never seems to stop dazzling.

Milan is like a box of delicious chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get. It’s filled with beautiful sights, fascinating history, incredible food, and enough designer fashion to make your head spin.

But for me, Milan is always about the ballet. And this week, darling, it was pure magic.

Teatro alla Scala

You see, my lovelies, this week saw me grace the hallowed halls of the Teatro alla Scala. For those of you unfamiliar with this legendary venue, let me enlighten you: it's an iconic opera house that dates back to the 1700s! It's dripping in history and its gilded walls are testament to a glorious past filled with music, art and dance.

I have to admit, stepping inside the theatre is like taking a step back in time. The red velvet seats, the intricate carvings, the grand chandelier that seemed to reach for the heavens, all combined to create an aura of unparalleled elegance and excitement. I knew from the moment I crossed the threshold that I was about to be part of something special.

I'd actually been longing to visit La Scala for ages, and it wasn't just because of its grand history. The rumour mill had been churning, suggesting a truly exceptional ballet programme featuring none other than my absolute favourite, the captivating Misty Copeland!

Of course, there was no way I was missing this, so, with a flick of my pink tutu skirt and a sparkle in my eye, I booked myself a ticket and hopped onto the tram, giddy with anticipation.

The ballet, as I expected, was spectacular. Misty Copeland is simply phenomenal! Every move, every gesture, radiated artistry and raw talent. The story, too, was one of soaring heights and deep emotional journeys, filled with such evocative choreography that I swear I could practically taste the drama.

And you know what, it wouldn’t have been a real “Emma in Milan” experience without a touch of unexpected serendipity! It turns out, I spotted Misty Copeland herself backstage after the show! It was such a whirlwind of excitement, the ballerina in me completely forgetting any social etiquette!

Instead of a composed, polite “Good evening, Miss Copeland”, I completely lost it and said the most ridiculous thing! "I just adore your pink tutu," I blurted out!

Misty Copeland laughed and told me "It was pink because it was the only one I could find before the show." Honestly, darling, it was just another wonderful chapter in the magical mystery of life in Milan. The experience made my trip truly memorable!

Milanese Chic

Of course, a visit to Milan wouldn’t be complete without exploring its fabulous fashion scene, and this week has been a riot of colours, textures and patterns, which was pure joy for a girl like me who loves nothing more than shopping, admiring and being inspired!

Let’s just say that this city has become a favourite destination for fashion fanatics around the world for good reason.

One day, I decided to wander through the charming Via Montenapoleone. I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the stunning storefronts, bursting with elegant window displays showcasing the latest designer collections. Each window was an artistic masterpiece! It's no surprise that Milan is often hailed as the fashion capital of the world!

While window shopping and swooning over designs, I also did some exploring off the beaten path – well, not literally off-path as I was walking, not driving. My dear readers, I'm still on the hunt for that perfect, authentic Milanese pink tutu. This quest, I have realised, is not so straightforward. I have explored high-end boutiques, charming local stores, even peered into a couple of bustling vintage shops, yet that elusive, exquisite pink tulle remains hidden. I'll let you know when I track it down, and in the meantime, I am continuing my search - It has become a sort of pilgrimage!

Milan’s Charm

This week in Milan wasn’t all about big theatres, expensive boutiques and glamorous sights, although I must confess I am a girl who thoroughly enjoys it all. The real heart of the city, though, is found in its quieter moments - its charm resides in the cobbled alleyways, the cafes with steaming cups of espresso, the friendly chatter of locals sharing a laugh as they browse in the market stalls. The true flavour of Milan is found in the air, it’s as simple as the aroma of freshly baked bread.

The city, I am happy to say, still keeps a certain charm and sophistication, even within its contemporary metropolis makeover. One can experience the timeless Milan and embrace the dynamism and vibrancy of a city pushing boundaries with a contemporary flair. This city really has everything a ballerina-turned-fashionista could want, but, more than that, it is about embracing life in its unique way!

Speaking of embracing life in unique ways, one thing I do have to tell you: Milan isn’t only about ballet and fashion! Believe it or not, Milan also offers an amazing array of activities, particularly for those of you who, like me, enjoy outdoor escapades. The Parco Sempione, right in the heart of the city, offers miles of green, scenic paths for strolling, joggers or for me, dancing! If you're feeling bold enough for a performance in the middle of the park, a few twirls amongst the Milanese wouldn’t be out of the question, it's an opportunity I plan on pursuing on my next trip.

And of course, no trip to Milan would be complete without sampling the mouthwatering local cuisine!

Food for Thought

This city is simply a gastronomic haven – a city for the gourmand in you! One simply cannot go without tasting the famous Milanese risotto and discovering the joys of a steaming bowl of panettone (though I have yet to locate the ultimate panettone, so if you have any Milanese recommendations, let me know!

And to wash down this wonderful food experience, one can’t beat a traditional Milanese espresso or a cup of Italian tea – even if that tea happens to be English breakfast. For a sophisticated coffee moment, Milan really is a fantastic city.

So there you have it – another incredible week in Milan! As always, the magic of ballet, the wonder of fashion, and the simple joy of exploring a captivating city combined to create memories that will stay with me for years to come. I have my pink tutu packed, darling, ready to set off to a new adventure, with my next destination waiting for me! But don't you worry - you'll be the first to know where my ballet shoes are headed next! Until then, keep your spirits high, your hearts full, and your pink tutus at the ready!

I shall be back next Monday on pink-tutu.com for my blog about Venice!

See you there, lovelies! Emma

P.S Would you believe it, my Milan adventures are sponsored by my performances, darling! Just yesterday, I danced at the lovely Piccolo Teatro with a company called Ballet Dreams! They gave me the chance to be the graceful leading ballerina and, at the end, they even presented me with a stunning, pink tutu! And, let me tell you, it fits perfectly!
