Pink Tutu Milan #219: Buongiorno Bella! The City of Fashion and Ballet!
Ciao darlings! Emma here, and welcome back to my weekly adventures on Pink-Tutu.com! I'm writing to you from the heart of Milan, the fashion capital of the world! Just imagine - this glorious city oozing with style and glamour and I'm right in the middle of it! And you know me, a girl who loves her pink tutus as much as she loves a good pair of designer shoes just couldn't resist! I'm on a mission to bring you all the ballet and fashion delights of this magical place.
Today's date is the 18th of August 1999, and the weather is positively balmy. Sunbeams are dancing through the window of my charming hotel room, a quaint little place just a hop and a skip from the famous Duomo. The air smells of freshly brewed espresso and the sweet scent of jasmine from a nearby garden. It's honestly idyllic!
I got here last night on a super romantic train ride from Verona. I adore travelling by train. The gentle rocking motion, the passing scenery, and the occasional shared conversation with a friendly local - there's nothing quite like it. I took a little break during the journey to catch up on some reading, specifically, the fabulous article on "The History of Ballet in Milan" in my brand new "Vogue Italia". There's always time for a bit of fashion research even when I'm on the go, right?
Oh, darling! Speaking of fashion, Milan has been an absolute whirlwind. From the moment I stepped off the train at Milano Centrale, it felt like I was being embraced by a city bursting with chic and stylish elegance. The streets are teeming with "fashionistas", clad in exquisite outfits that would make even a seasoned Parisian blush. I saw a couple wearing matching lime green turtlenecks and beige wide-leg trousers on the train - divine! And imagine my joy at spotting a gentleman on the metro sporting a beautiful silk scarf tied just so with his navy pinstripe suit - I mean, perfection! They call it street fashion for a reason - Milan is like an open-air fashion show. It’s absolutely intoxicating.
And if you thought Milan was all about haute couture, then let me tell you - it's also a haven for all things ballet! There are so many incredible ballet schools and dance studios sprinkled around the city, it's honestly incredible. I can barely keep up with them all! I popped into a beautiful studio yesterday, right near the Brera district, and watched an inspiring contemporary ballet class. The energy was infectious, and the movements were so captivating. I found myself lost in the grace and athleticism of these amazing dancers. It was just incredible. It also made me realise I’m a little rusty and that it’s time I return to some classes myself!
Oh, I must tell you about the stunning La Scala theatre! This magnificent opera house is one of the most iconic landmarks in Milan. The facade itself is just breathtaking! It has such grandeur and majesty, you can't help but feel inspired just being near it. You know, this place holds so much history and passion for the arts. I simply couldn't miss the opportunity to check out their incredible ballet program. I just bought tickets for tonight's performance of Giselle, and oh my! I cannot wait to see this timeless classic brought to life on such a prestigious stage! The seats are excellent, and it seems the audience is going to be buzzing with excitement, just like me!
Speaking of exciting events, tonight I'm taking myself to a real treat - a sumptuous three-course meal at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, this gorgeous glass-vaulted shopping arcade, with all the incredible luxury shops and restaurants. It's truly spectacular. My evening will be filled with exquisite food, vibrant company, and the joy of being utterly present in this dazzling city. You've got to be bold and embrace life's experiences!
I don't know if it's the sunshine, the intoxicating smells of Italy, or just being surrounded by such creative energy, but I’m feeling totally inspired! I can't help but let my imagination run wild and see tutus everywhere! I can envision people skipping down the cobblestone streets, tutus twirling and swishing in a beautiful pink flurry. Just picture it! It's so whimsical! After all, tutus are not just for the stage. They're for life!
I also had the absolute thrill of popping into Teatro degli Arcimboldi yesterday - a breathtakingly beautiful theatre tucked away in the suburbs. They're showcasing a contemporary dance piece - "Rhapsodic Dance" - that sounded quite intriguing and absolutely worth seeing. Of course, with the magic of the internet, I bought myself a ticket there and then and now I'm counting down the hours to another captivating ballet experience! It's been such a fantastic introduction to Milan's ballet scene. Oh, this city knows how to hold on to tradition and passion, even while embracing contemporary dance trends. And that's the magic of Milan!
And the beauty of it all? I'm seeing all this fantastic work without having to spend a fortune on the "fancy" tickets you get in England. You know what I'm saying, darling! There are many affordable venues that put on fabulous ballet shows. I'm already planning my next ballet outing in this wondrous city! It just feels so easy here, almost as easy as waltzing in the sun.
I also must mention my darling tram journey through the city - such a unique way to experience Milan's charm. It felt as if I was stepping back in time. Riding along, past stunning buildings, quaint piazzas, and bustling markets, made me realise how effortlessly beautiful this city is! It's easy to see how it's become a true beacon of artistry and style!
However, with a beautiful, glamorous city like Milan, it's vital you dress to impress! This city is a showcase of fashion at its best, from the classic Italian brands like Gucci, Prada, and Armani to the emerging local designers. Milan has become the heart of European style. Now, who's with me for a day at Via Montenapoleone? It’s one of the most fashionable shopping streets in the world!
I've got my eye on a beautiful emerald green silk dress, and you know I'm going to complete it with my tutu! You know the drill darling: I believe everyone should have at least one tutu!
I'm not going to lie to you - it's a real struggle holding myself back from splurging! I've got my eye on a stunning silver-toned handbag and the prettiest pink silk scarf from Dolce and Gabbana, and who could resist a new pair of bright red designer shoes?! It's the epitome of 'treat yourself'! Oh, I really need to exercise a bit more restraint. I feel like my luggage is about to explode!
Oh, and on that note - what's a Milan visit without sampling the real Italian experience, like stopping for delicious gelato, sitting in a café for a leisurely cappuccino or trying those heavenly pastries? My diet, like my suitcases, will need a little expanding for sure!
Before I say goodbye - I am, of course, going to squeeze in a quick ballet class or two before my show tonight. It's a wonderful way to clear my mind, get some energy into my day and I know a little light stretching always adds that extra bit of grace to any ensemble!
To my Pink Tutu followers - please share your fashion and ballet experiences, especially your tips on all things fashion-related! Where do you buy your fabulous accessories and clothing? Are you a tutu-loving dancer or a passionate ballet fan? I'm waiting to hear about it all on our Pink-Tutu social media channels.
Now, back to Milan and my magnificent weekend in this city! I'm so happy to share this journey with you! Until next week - keep twirling!
With a twirl, Emma x
