Pink Tutu Milan: Wednesday 2002-07-24 – Post #372

Ciao Bella!

It’s Wednesday again, which means it’s time for another Pink Tutu Milan update from your favourite pink-tutu-wearing ballerina, yours truly! This week, I'm positively brimming with excitement after a simply divine time exploring Milan. This city is an absolute whirlwind of fashion, art, and history, all rolled into one fabulous package, and I wouldn't trade my experiences here for the world!

But before we dive into my Milan adventures, let's have a quick chat about how my journey started. I caught a late evening train from Verona – all steamy windows and delicious coffee aromas – which felt very European and magical! The train trundled past vineyards, rolling hills, and little sleepy villages, painting a dreamy landscape outside my window.

When I finally arrived in Milan, the energy of the city was palpable – a joyous buzz of laughter, conversations in different languages, and the sweet aroma of freshly baked bread filling the air. You know, the kind of delicious scent that just begs you to indulge in a pastry at the first cafe you spot! And who am I to resist? Especially when it's a beautifully decorated cafe, bursting with floral accents and charming old ladies sipping cappuccinos.

After a very yummy croissant, I headed straight to my favourite place in all of Milan – La Scala Opera House! As a self-proclaimed dance enthusiast, this legendary venue is a temple of art and inspiration for me. Its elegant facade, adorned with sculptures and grand pillars, simply oozes history. The moment you enter the building, the air crackles with energy, anticipation, and an unspoken understanding of the beauty and power of performance.

Stepping inside, I could barely contain my excitement! Every detail, from the elaborate gilded décor to the crimson velvet seats, spoke of a passion for performance. This time, I had the joy of attending a breathtaking performance of *La Traviata (which if you’ve never seen, you *must put on your list!) The story was brought to life with incredible talent, stunning costumes and an orchestra that transported you right to the heart of the drama. I felt utterly transported.

Dress Code? Why, it’s a Pink Tutu, of Course!

The audience, a sophisticated mix of locals and visitors, were beautifully dressed, some in evening gowns, others in chic suits – but no matter the style, every single person radiated the excitement of being at a place as iconic as La Scala. Naturally, I added my own little touch of Pink Tutu Magic! A vibrant pink tulle creation, paired with my favourite pair of silver ballet shoes – what a way to add some flair to a sophisticated setting, eh?!

You can be sure my pink tutu stole the show (sorry, couldn't resist!), and of course, I received lots of compliments from fellow ballet lovers. There's something so empowering and joyful about embracing a bit of colour and whimsy, you know?

Dancing my way around the city...

After the performance, my feet couldn’t bear to leave the magical space that is La Scala, so I indulged in a few stretches. As a fellow ballet enthusiast, you'll appreciate my need to get those muscles working, even in such a grand setting!

Afterward, it was off to explore Milan, This vibrant city is perfect for a leisurely stroll! The stunning architecture is everywhere, with a unique mix of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance styles. It’s like every street corner reveals a new, delightful surprise. You can see why Milan is considered a fashion capital; even the street style is incredibly fashionable.

And talking about fashion… It goes without saying, that as a Pink Tutu blogger, I had to go shopping! I made sure I walked along Via Monte Napoleone, where the most beautiful designer boutiques line the streets. And wouldn’t you know it, the window displays were a feast for the eyes! A whirlwind of colour, style and couture – the inspiration just poured out of them!

Speaking of my fabulous outfits, the beautiful weather allowed me to embrace Milan's outdoor life – I spent time strolling along the pretty Naviglio Grande canals and savoring the delights of al fresco dining. Imagine: the warm Italian sun on my face, a delicious Italian salad with a glass of chilled white wine... perfection.

I couldn't leave Milan without visiting Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II – this magnificent shopping arcade, adorned with stunning mosaic floors and soaring glass ceilings, was definitely on my list. As I strolled through this beautiful place, the glass roof seemed to amplify the atmosphere, reflecting the colourful boutiques and the animated chatter of people enjoying their afternoon shopping trips. A truly spectacular experience! It made me wish I had more time to shop... I might have had to add a suitcase to my pink tutu to carry my new finds!

Catching up with my favourite Ballerina...

Milan was filled with unexpected surprises. I met an absolutely delightful, very well-known Italian ballet dancer - she was on her way to a class at a gorgeous ballet studio in a hidden, cobblestoned alley! The studio was charming, with beautifully lit rooms, polished wooden floors, and a feeling of history and tradition – but it also felt incredibly welcoming. We talked about her recent tour with her dance troupe – so glamorous!

And she told me her favorite memory: performing a beautiful ballet routine at the Duomo! This beautiful church was designed with such detail, and I was already dying to visit! My new ballet buddy told me a wonderful story: The performance started before the crowds woke up, at 6am. She’d had the opportunity to stand on the roof, and experience an amazing view of the city just before dawn! I just couldn’t imagine how beautiful that moment must have been – breathtaking! She had me imagining the graceful choreography performed amidst such beautiful architecture... it was a moment that warmed my heart and filled me with awe!

She had such passion, she lit up with joy just describing the show! And the beautiful pink rose she wore made her glow! So you know I had to grab my sketchbook to sketch it - it’s going straight into my next pink tutu inspired design!

After our lovely chat, I couldn’t wait to head to the Duomo, so we shared a final hug (a real Italian squeeze) and I rushed to meet with my dear friend, a fashion stylist.

Back to the Beauty of Ballet

We strolled together toward the cathedral. Her style was a feast for my eyes, and she was such a joy to walk with - so much personality, a real fashion star! After some fun window-shopping, she shared all the tips and trends to keep an eye out for, for my next Pink Tutu collection (it’s a secret... shhhh!).

I found out that this week is Milan Fashion Week and it seemed like all of Italy was converging here. Everywhere we walked, the air buzzed with fashion designers, bloggers and influencers! Of course, with my Pink Tutu and ballet shoes, I fit right in!

The Duomo was absolutely majestic. I just stood there for a long time to take it all in - from its elaborate façade and the beautiful gothic arches to its soaring spire - it really is a remarkable monument to artistry and faith. It was simply breath-taking.

Taking on the Milan tram...

Next, it was time to ride the Milan tram! And to make it even more memorable, we travelled from Piazza del Duomo straight to the city park - It was just lovely! The warm Italian air smelled sweet with the scent of summer flowers, and there was a wonderful symphony of bird song.

The park was truly magnificent. Beautiful fountains, picturesque statues, and manicured gardens, dotted with elegant benches and people picnicking.

Later, we walked back into the bustling centre and took our seats in a quiet, dimly lit little Cafe to relish the end of a beautiful Milan day. We drank cups of warm chamomile tea (perfect for the calming and relaxed atmosphere).

The entire day was a magical journey, so many wonderful things. I think we need a full day here every single week, right? And yes, the next day, we had to find the time to head back and walk the pretty gardens of The Sempione, just a 10-minute walk from the beautiful, magnificent Duomo.

But more about those adventures later.

So, as the day fades in this beautiful Italian city, I wish you all a good night and a happy dance! Don't forget to visit Pink-Tutu.com every week to hear all about my escapades!

Until next time!

Love,

Emma xxx
