Pink Tutu Milan - Post #478: Ciao Bella! Fashion & Ballet in the City of Lights (Well, Almost!)

Wednesday, 4th August 2004

Buongiorno, my darling tutu-wearing darlings! Emma here, your resident Pink Tutu traveller, reporting live from Milan, Italy! As I'm sure you know, Italy is the land of fashion, culture, and oh-so-much delicious food, and this week I've been taking in all three, sprinkled liberally with a dose of fabulous ballet, of course! This week's adventure? A whirlwind of silk scarves, vintage shopping, and the most enchanting performance by the Teatro alla Scala!

But first, a little bit about getting here. I left my Derbyshire home on Saturday, the first step on my pink-tutu-tastic journey. As usual, I felt like a vision in my favourite vintage pink tutu (found on a little treasure hunt in Notting Hill, of course!), paired with my trusty black velvet jacket. Let's be honest, a little bit of dramatic flair is required when travelling, especially across Europe!

The journey started with a lovely train ride from Derbyshire to London. You know I'm all about that vintage elegance, and catching the train allows me to do a little bit of people-watching while sipping my morning cuppa. Plus, I got to indulge in the quintessentially British tradition of buying a newspaper and catching up on all the news (including fashion, naturally!).

And what do you know? Right on the train, I found a little inspiration! This young woman, looking like she was on her way to an audition (perhaps the Royal Ballet, maybe?!), was wearing the most delightful pair of ballet flats with the most adorable floral print. So there you have it - even your daily commute can be a source of style inspiration!

Fashion Finds

When I arrived in London, I had a little detour through one of my favourite vintage shops in the West End. Let's be honest, the hunt for unique and stylish pieces is half the fun! I snagged a magnificent, embroidered vintage shawl - perfect for a cool Milanese evening - and a delightful pair of pearl earrings. The shop had a bit of everything, and the owner, a wonderfully eccentric lady called Beatrice, has such a knack for finding the most unusual treasures. It's always a treat to chat with her about the history of each piece and their stories - it's like a mini fashion history lesson!

After the fashion finds, I whisked away to Kings Cross Station, my ticket clutched in my hand, and soon I was off on the Eurostar. A luxurious experience, if I do say so myself, with comfy seats and enough time for me to enjoy my packed picnic - you wouldn't catch me eating on an empty stomach, now would you?!

Then, a quick hop onto the Milan metro - oh my word, they have the most stylish metro carriages, all sleek and modern, perfect for showcasing my Parisian-inspired outfit - and finally, I arrived at my little B&B in the heart of the city. This charming spot is a haven of delicate floral wallpaper and a balcony with a perfect view of the Duomo. I'll definitely be making the most of this lovely little terrace during the evenings.

The Magic of Ballet at La Scala

After a little nap, it was time to make my way to the magnificent Teatro alla Scala! Oh, my darlings, it's even more beautiful in person than you can imagine! Think grand pillars, golden statues, and velvet plush seating. Just exquisite! And I managed to get a spot right in the centre - I am blessed by the ballet gods!

The performance? Simply exquisite! It was a beautiful and evocative rendition of Giselle, a timeless ballet classic that always touches my heart. It is quite astounding the amount of strength and emotion you can see on display from these professional dancers - they literally poured their souls onto that stage.

Speaking of the dancers, there was a little darling from the corps de ballet who had the most lovely little pink tutu, reminding me that pink can make an elegant statement. It had a subtle shimmer, reminding me of a summer's day with its light and airy feel, yet it remained beautifully simple in design. It was perfect for the romantic story of Giselle - such elegance and delicate grace!

Milan's Magic

Of course, it's not all just ballet and beautiful performances! The streets of Milan are buzzing with life. Everywhere I look, I see stylish people from all walks of life. There are these chic mothers in designer outfits with little kids, stylish couples sipping cappuccinos, and students huddled together sharing gelato - such a melting pot of amazing individuals!

The shops here are truly incredible - rows and rows of chic boutiques with windows bursting with the latest designs and beautiful displays. It's like a candy shop for your fashion senses! And the architecture? Well, it's as captivating as it is magnificent. There's something about the way old buildings with terracotta roofs blend seamlessly with the sleek modern structures, a beautiful marriage of styles that creates such an alluring aesthetic.

It's safe to say I'm in love with this city. The air hums with an energy, a kind of stylish vibrancy that fills you with excitement! But for now, I'm going to be catching a tram down to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. I'm on a quest for a stunning silk scarf with intricate embroidery to wear to a wonderful little theatre performance tonight. (I have my sights on the perfect scarlet and emerald combo - it will look divine with my velvet jacket!).

This, my darlings, is life as I know it. Ballet, shopping, and delicious adventures in this beautiful Italian city - I couldn't be happier! Don't forget to check back next Monday for more exciting news from my Pink Tutu Milan journey.

Until then, stay sparkly and remember, the only limit to your style is your own imagination. And please, let me know if you have any questions or need recommendations about this city!

With much love,

Emma xx

P.S. I know, I know - you want to see my outfit for the ballet. It was divine! I went with a shimmering rose pink tutu, a flowing vintage silk blouse, and my trusted pink feather boa (never leave home without it!). I know I can't forget my favourite, black leather boots - the perfect pairing for that dramatic touch, just the way I like it. And yes, it all went beautifully with the theatre's enchanting ambience. 😉

P.P.S. And who can resist a little reminder to try a pink tutu?! Even just a little, I guarantee you’ll fall in love with the feeling of whimsy and confidence that comes with it! Let me know your experience if you decide to give it a go!
