Pink Tutu Milan: Post Number 822: Fashion & Flora in the City of Style

Wednesday, 2011-03-09

Ciao, darlings! I hope you're all feeling as fabulous as a newly-pressed pink tutu! This week, we're taking a whirl through Milan, the fashion capital of the world, a place where the sidewalks are like a runway and the air is filled with the scent of freshly-brewed espresso and possibility. I arrived last Friday, feeling like I'd stepped straight out of a fairytale, the city gleaming under a sapphire sky.

Now, you all know how much I adore pink tutus, and they're not just for the stage! My beloved fuchsia confection is making quite a splash in Milan, turning heads at the cafes, gracing the tram with its frills, and attracting a whole symphony of smiles from fellow travellers. There's a real spirit of playful individuality in this city, and my tutu fits right in.

Speaking of travel, Milan is such a wonderful city to explore by tram. I always love finding my way through a new city by public transport, a real window into local life. And the tram lines are so beautifully decorated here, it's almost as if they were built to inspire dreams, a kind of ballet on wheels. It makes me want to grab a dancer's bag and create a choreographed flash mob at the next stop. Maybe one day!

Ballet at the Teatro alla Scala:

Last night, my dearest darling (and most devoted reader), I was blessed to witness the magic unfold at the Teatro alla Scala. Oh my! This renowned opera house has got to be the most spectacular building in Milan! Every detail, from the ornate chandeliers to the plush red velvet seats, whispers of grandeur and history.

The ballet was "Giselle", a tale of betrayal and ethereal love. The performance was breathtaking, the dancers so expressive and their movements a delight to watch. And that famous ethereal final act... well, let's just say a few tears may have escaped. It reminded me of how much beauty there is in the world when we let our hearts truly dance.

Fashion and Flora in the City:

Now, let's talk about fashion, shall we? You can’t talk about Milan without mentioning its exquisite fashion boutiques and designer shops, lined up in beautiful squares, like a glittering catwalk of style. I found myself walking around like I was a character in my own fairy tale, window-shopping and dreaming of tulle skirts and dazzling dresses. I found this tiny little boutique that was just brimming with vintage finds, perfect for adding a touch of “Belle Epoque” charm to my wardrobe. I snagged the most divine pink sequined flapper dress, a little bit Roaring Twenties glamour mixed with that sweet Parisian chic I adore. It practically sings “Je t'aime” to every mirror I pass.

But the beauty in Milan isn't only in the fashion! The parks here are such a haven for flora, full of fragrant blossoms and a vibrant life, it's just amazing. A huge floral exhibition is going on in the Palazzo Reale right now, it’s like stepping into a kaleidoscope of color! The flowers have inspired a lot of designers to include gorgeous floral prints and patterns in their latest collections, too, so get ready for a floral explosion of colour and romantic femininity, all spring and summer long.

Finding Inspiration on the Streets:

There's such a beautiful effortless grace about Milan. It seems to seep into everyone I meet. This week, I spotted this woman, looking absolutely divine in a flawlessly tailored white suit and a little hat, dancing her way down the street like she owned every inch of the city, even in the morning traffic! And her attitude? She was as graceful and self-assured as a swan on a calm pond, radiating that effortless Parisian cool. That’s the secret to Milanese style, it's all about feeling your best, not trying too hard to be trendy, and just being comfortable in your own skin, like you were born to rock those fab shoes.

Speaking of inspiring street styles, there’s an amazing group of street performers in Milan that come out in the evenings. I’ve seen some beautiful street ballet groups doing routines by the river, and some fantastic buskers who weave magic into their performances, and a few street art projects using pink tutus, oh my! This city is like a vibrant mix of art, fashion and everyday life. And the pink tutus fit right in!

From Derbyshire to the City of Style:

You know, sometimes, when I’m wandering around in these grand palaces or fancy boutiques, I get a bit nostalgic for my little hometown in Derbyshire. But the thing about being a ballet dancer and travelling the world is that I carry my home with me, no matter where I go. There's a special place in my heart for Derbyshire’s beautiful countryside and for the people who know me best.

My little hometown taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. Those are important lessons to have learned as a young dancer, and it's the dedication I learned back then that helps me push myself to achieve my dreams.

That reminds me: this weekend, I’m off to watch another performance at the Teatro alla Scala. And I've got my eyes on a little shop in the old town, they've got a vintage pink tutu on display, a little bit of flapper glamour mixed with the elegance of a classic ballet tutu! My journey through Milan continues!

Keeping the Dream Alive:

So, as I sit here writing to you in my hotel room in Milan, my heart is overflowing with joy! Every week I’m inspired by my travels. And that’s what I’m all about in this little pink-tutu-filled world: following my heart and inspiring others to do the same!

Don’t forget, darling, there's a spark of magic in all of us. And every single one of you is unique, and beautifully beautiful. Just like a tutu, you deserve to be free and to express your individuality with joy and confidence! So put on your tutu, or just a splash of pink, and get ready to dance to the beat of your own heart!

Catch you all next week for more pink-tutu-infused adventures! Ciao for now!

Emma xx
