Pink Tutu Milan - Post #845 - Wednesday 17th August 2011: A Week of Ballet & Bel Paese Bliss!
Ciao, darlings!
It’s Emma here, reporting live from the heart of Milan. The sun’s beaming, the air is buzzing with a joyful energy, and, most importantly, my pink tutu is ready to conquer the city! This week has been a whirlwind of tutus, tramcars, and…well, the most glorious pasta I’ve ever tasted!
This blog post is dedicated to the enchanting ballet performances, the exquisite shopping adventures, and the charmingly chaotic atmosphere of Milan. Let me tell you, this city has completely captured my heart – much like a pair of exquisite Italian leather gloves!
A Week in the World of Dance:Milan: Ballet's Jewel
Monday saw me in the audience at the Teatro alla Scala, where a breathtaking performance of Swan Lake had me spellbound. The grace of the dancers, the drama of the choreography, the grandeur of the theatre itself – it was like stepping into a fairytale! Afterward, I dined on the most divine gelato – you know how much I adore gelato – I just wish I’d brought my pink tutu back with me from Derbyshire. It would have been absolutely perfect.
Tuesday took me to a ballet class at the Scuola di Ballo. The teacher, Signora Francesca, was absolutely fabulous! Her passion for ballet was so contagious. It felt so empowering, being surrounded by such elegant and inspiring women.
I know I shouldn't boast, but, dear readers, my turnout has really improved!
Wednesday was a whirlwind of a ballet matinee. I felt like a child again, entranced by the magic of La Bayadère at the Teatro Dal Verme. Every turn, every leap, every arabesque was perfection!
You might not be able to imagine what a glorious thing it was. But I don’t think I could ever stop my tutus from dancing! It would be too wrong to put them away! The choreography was so intricate, so imaginative - I can't wait to go back!
The next day was a real treat: a ballet street performance in the heart of the city! The dancers had an amazing ability to adapt their routine to the urban landscape, twirling through the crowds as though they were gliding across a stage. A perfect example of the beautiful way ballet can be part of any environment!
And speaking of environments, the streets of Milan have me completely entranced! The architecture is a delight, the boutiques beckon, and even the tram ride through the city is an adventure! I mean, who could possibly resist a journey in a vintage tramcars with peeling yellow paint! You’d think I was back in the 1950s. And let's not forget, darling, this means so many wonderful people watching opportunities, which of course is where my pink tutu really comes into its own. The fashionistas of Milan love the way I use the pink as a pop of color against their often muted tones.
Speaking of fashion…
A Shopping Odyssey in the City of Style:Friday was dedicated to a shopping expedition! You’ve probably heard the famous phrase 'Milan - the Fashion Capital of the World.' But honestly, who wouldn’t be a little overwhelmed!
We visited the Duomo in the morning. What a cathedral! We took a tour with a lovely Italian chap who, much to the amusement of the other people on the tour, knew as much about the cathedral’s architecture as he did about Italian history, particularly his favorite period - The Renaissance - his favourite person in history was Michelangelo. And he’d always wanted to be a tenor. I thought it was rather sweet. After that, I’d thought of doing a bit of shopping on the Piazza della Scala. I wanted to treat myself to a few new ballet shoes. I saw this glorious little shop that reminded me of a beautiful jewellery box, you know the ones your Mum or your Grandmother keep their heirlooms in. It was all red velvet and antique mirrors. I’m thinking that this could be my favourite ballet shoe boutique in the whole world! They were very much taken with my pink tutu. The shoe saleswoman assured me I had an exceptional ‘air’ - you just love the way the Italians use words so theatrically - so I made a beeline for the satin pink ballet slippers. A must-have for my ever-growing collection!
And to add some real sparkle to the day, I ventured into a breathtaking antique jewellery shop, tucked away in a narrow, cobblestone alley. I felt like I'd stepped back in time! The exquisite gems – rubies, emeralds, diamonds, and even the odd baroque pearl – simply mesmerized me. You know how much I love jewelry, but I could only imagine how perfect these pieces would look with the right outfit – and yes, you’ve guessed it - a pink tutu would absolutely complete any outfit.
There is simply no more glamour than an outfit with a good dose of vintage Italian jewels.
After a long day shopping - we didn’t get out of the store till after seven in the evening - and several purchases of ballet gear and some gorgeous little pearl earrings - oh, and a necklace! I was so grateful that, in my tired state, I managed to find a lovely little café near my hotel.
They said a glass of Pinot Grigio - very good - the restaurant was charming - full of Italian folk talking nineteen to the dozen. Just so much animation.
After, I decided I deserved to be pampered and headed to the Hotel Carlton's beauty salon, which promised “an afternoon of sheer pampering”! I know I have such high maintenance tendencies but you know I deserve the ultimate luxury – especially after my trip around all the fantastic shops. They recommended I try the 'Venetian Mask' treatment - it leaves the skin radiant and I couldn't resist indulging myself. I even found some of the shop’s amazing Italian facial scrubs to buy to take back with me.
Ciao Bella! Farewell Milan…Milan has been an incredible adventure for me, a captivating blend of art, culture, and elegance, that has fuelled my love for ballet, fashion, and all things beautiful. The Italian way of life really captures your imagination! And as I bid adieu to this dazzling city, I can’t help but feel a sense of joyful contentment, knowing I have brought back not only some fabulous purchases, but also an array of inspiring experiences and memories to cherish forever. And darling, there's not a doubt in my mind - I will definitely be back!
The pink tutu is packed, ready for its next big adventure - which, I can tell you, is going to be a complete mystery! Just keep checking my blog for news, but remember it will be back next Monday. And, in the meantime, why don’t you give wearing a pink tutu a go!
Ciao bella!
Emma
