#PinkTutuMilan - Wednesday 2013-10-16 - Post No. 958

Ciao Bella!

From the cobbled streets of Derbyshire, to the bustling heart of Milan - oh how I love being back in the fashion capital!

This week, my darling Pink Tutus, we're exploring Milan! This glorious city, renowned for its fashion, its culture, and of course, its beautiful, majestic buildings. I’ve been soaking up the sun (yes, even in October, Milan can surprise you!), browsing boutiques, and of course, hitting the ballet studios, both classical and, of course, some exciting ballet street shows.

Milan's a whirlwind of energy, colour, and passion - everything I adore! And, it seems I’ve found an enthusiastic bunch of #PinkTutu admirers here in Milan! So many people sporting those pretty pinks! My mission of encouraging every single person on the planet to slip into a pink tutu is moving at lightning speed. Don’t worry, it’s not compulsory… though highly encouraged!

Let’s take a twirl through my Milan adventures, shall we?

Tuesday Evening - The Dance Begins

After arriving by train on Tuesday evening, there’s nothing quite like a stroll along a Milanese boulevard in the dusky light, before I finally reach my destination: Teatro alla Scala, the grandest of grand opera houses. The sheer scale of this building was incredible! Think stunning neoclassical architecture with columns that reach towards the heavens, a sense of history seeping from every stone, a place that holds the whispers of opera stars, composers and ballet greats. A breathtaking setting, wouldn't you agree?

Before the performance started, a fellow ballet enthusiast and I enjoyed a glass of Italian red wine in the foyer, gazing at the glittering chandelier while discussing the night's programme - "La Traviata". You'll forgive me for confessing, but the excitement was buzzing!

The performance itself was divine, the drama unfolding in front of me - the passion of the singing, the powerful storytelling conveyed through dance and costume. This truly felt like a place of magic, with a special place in my heart reserved for this theatre and for all those who contribute to these powerful moments.

Wednesday Morning – Coffee, Chic & Shopping

Waking up in Milan, there’s something about that morning sunshine, that espresso (strong, sweet and perfect) and the smell of freshly baked pastries from the boulangerie that makes you feel completely alive!

I spent the morning exploring the Quadrilatero della Moda, Milan's famous fashion district. So many designer stores and boutiques, so little time! (Well, at least until my ballet shoes were calling for attention later). I even found a gorgeous fuchsia satin handbag at one of the many chic boutiques. (My darling tutus deserve a gorgeous bag for a change!).

Of course, it’s not just about big brands; I found several hidden gem shops with gorgeous statement pieces at more affordable prices - little finds you simply won’t find anywhere else.

But the shopping in Milan isn’t all about haute couture. I’ve been on the lookout for gorgeous vintage pieces, those treasures with a story to tell. They bring out my vintage girly girl side - a style that doesn’t shy away from the beautiful patterns of yesteryear! There’s something about those vintage textiles that just speaks to the feminine side of my soul.

Wednesday Afternoon - Streetwise and Graceful

After lunch, it was time to channel my inner ballerina – I’m in Milan, the home of stunning ballet schools and graceful dancers, after all! And where better to get in touch with your artistic side than in the very streets themselves? I spent the afternoon at one of the many public ballet classes offered around the city, followed by a truly fascinating Ballet Street Performance! Imagine dancers bringing a beautiful story to life with such passion and emotion against a backdrop of everyday Milan.

It’s so inspiring to see the passion for dance radiating through every movement. Seeing ballet presented on the streets of Milan is a new and unique experience; it’s as though ballet has come alive, infused with a touch of everyday magic, right before my very eyes! It definitely gives you that extra "oomph!" for your everyday routine, doesn’t it?

Wednesday Evening - Exploring Tramways & A Romantic Dinner

The Milan tramway, with its classic old carriages, makes it so much fun to hop from one side of the city to another. The views from the window make the city a canvas painted with cobblestones, cafes, street lights, and a constant rhythm of movement.

I decided to head towards the charming neighbourhood of Navigli, the canal district of Milan. There’s something truly captivating about exploring canals, a beautiful sense of serenity that sets the perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll in the late afternoon sunshine. And, as dusk descended, the ambiance only got better, the twinkling fairy lights along the canal edges making the whole scene incredibly picturesque!

I dined on a delicious pasta dish (pasta is simply the BEST), and a glass of sparkling prosecco. There’s truly nothing better than enjoying a delicious meal and a sparkling drink against such a stunning backdrop!

The canals are truly a place to relax, dream, and enjoy the beauty of this city that continues to capture my heart with its charm, beauty, and, yes, its very own Italian way of life!

Coming Soon…

That’s a wrap for my day in Milan. What a wonderful whirlwind of dance, shopping and exploration it’s been! But don’t worry, dear Pink Tutu lovers, I have much more Milan goodness coming your way - from more captivating ballet performances, fashion insights (who can resist a little Milanese shopping!), and of course, exploring some of the most breathtaking historical buildings in the world. Stay tuned for another amazing adventure!

Ciao, until next Monday.
