Pink Tutu Milan #1017: A Whirlwind of Romance, Elegance, and Pink (Naturally!)
Ciao Bella! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad blogger, Emma, reporting live from Milan, the fashion capital of the world. This week has been a whirlwind of romance, elegance, and (you guessed it!) pink. It's no secret that I'm obsessed with tutus and ballet, but my love affair with this city just keeps getting deeper with every visit.
Before I get lost in the pink-tinted clouds of my Milanese adventures, let's take a quick trip down memory lane. My Derbyshire roots may be firmly planted in the heart of the Peak District, but my love affair with Milan started years ago when I fell head-over-heels for this glamorous city's passion for style and art. Every year, I fund my travels through performances and ballet classes, because nothing fuels my passion for dance quite like seeing incredible ballet shows, attending workshops, and learning from the best.
Speaking of this week, let's dive right in to the glamorous mayhem. My pink tutu and I have been twirling through a kaleidoscope of experiences, and I'm dying to share it all with you!
Day 1: A Romantic Rendezvous with Milan's History
I arrived in Milan on Wednesday, and it's safe to say I landed in a dream! The air was thick with anticipation for the holidays, and the city pulsed with a vibrant energy that was contagious. Stepping out of the station, I took a deep breath, letting the rich aroma of roasted chestnuts and the sweet sounds of carols seep into my soul.
I decided to embrace the vintage charm of Milan by hopping onto a tram to my hotel. It felt like travelling back in time, with its ornate design and rumbling rhythm. I even caught glimpses of locals enjoying their morning cappuccino and browsing the window displays of charming little boutiques. My hotel, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Brera, instantly won me over with its beautiful courtyard and elegant atmosphere.
The evening was dedicated to discovering a little piece of Milan's history at the Castello Sforzesco, a majestic castle that stands as a testament to the city's rich past. The majestic architecture, surrounded by peaceful green spaces, transported me back in time. I felt like I had stumbled upon a hidden fairy tale! After my historic adventure, I was hungry for authentic Milanese cuisine. I found a tiny, unassuming trattoria that felt like a family secret. Their signature "Osso Buco" – a slow-cooked veal shank - melted in my mouth. I truly felt like I was tasting a little slice of Italy.
Day 2: Ballet Beauty & Parisian Chic
Milan may be known for fashion, but it's a secret haven for ballet lovers too! Today, I had the honour of seeing Teatro alla Scala (the famed La Scala) host the world-famous "Nutcracker" ballet performance. I knew the classic story well, but this performance felt alive with the vibrant colours of the costumes and the delicate choreography. My heart danced with each graceful step.
It's safe to say that I fell completely under the spell of this breathtaking spectacle. Afterwards, I indulged in a little retail therapy at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan’s grand shopping arcade. I just love its ornate ceilings and dazzling array of designer stores. There's something truly magical about seeing those sparkling storefronts adorned with twinkling lights. And yes, I found a little something pink for myself - a new scarf that’s soft as a feather!
Day 3: Discovering Milan's Hidden Gems
There's always something new to discover in Milan. Today, I decided to step out of the familiar and explore the city's quirky side. I embarked on a treasure hunt of Milan’s Hidden Churches, each with its own story to tell. From the grandeur of the Duomo to the charming simplicity of San Eustorgio, every church felt like a unique, sacred sanctuary.
In the afternoon, I had a delightful experience attending a ballet workshop in the beautiful Brera district. I truly believe that Milan's artistic soul shines in its embrace of creativity. The workshop brought together dancers from all levels and backgrounds, all united by their love for movement. I learnt some stunning new moves, which definitely left me feeling energised. The warm atmosphere of the studio made me feel like I had stepped into a creative haven. We were a true community of pink tutu-loving sisters!
Later, I found myself drawn to the bohemian vibes of Navigli. This network of canals, lined with bars and restaurants, provided the perfect setting for a relaxing stroll. I watched locals chatting on terraces, enjoying delicious pizzas, and sipping on cocktails. It felt like the kind of setting straight out of a vintage film.
Day 4: Embracing the Art of Life
Every day in Milan feels like a "Day of Art". Today, my pink tutu was on full display at the Museo Poldi Pezzoli. It's such a delightful museum full of history, art, and some seriously incredible furniture. This collection showcased the exquisite taste of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, a man with a true appreciation for beauty, and it left me feeling inspired and surrounded by beauty.
For my lunch, I followed my nose and ended up at Mercato Centrale, Milan’s newest foodie heaven! It’s a vibrant market filled with the scents and flavours of Italy. My taste buds were doing the cha-cha-cha with each bite - a delightful explosion of tastes and textures. From melt-in-your-mouth cheeses to colourful fresh produce and hand-crafted pastries, every stall was a delicious adventure.
The evening brought an inspiring show to the Teatro del Carignano, showcasing a contemporary ballet troupe. The energy was electric as they performed with a contemporary twist, breaking traditional barriers and celebrating movement in its rawest form.
Day 5: Milan's Magical Finale
My trip to Milan was nearing its end, but I knew this couldn’t be just any ordinary final day! I started it by taking a train journey to Lake Como, nestled in the foothills of the Alps. The views of the rolling hills, glistening lakes and towering mountains felt almost too magical.
After a relaxing boat trip on the lake, I discovered a hidden gem of a tea shop tucked away in a quiet corner. It felt like a scene out of a fairytale, with a steaming cup of tea and a warm slice of homemade cake.
As the evening approached, it was time to say "ciao" to this magnificent city. Back in Milan, I found a charming little bookshop where I picked up a new book by a local author. I love that Milan is not just about fashion but about literature too. And finally, I indulged in one last meal at Il Salumaio - an Italian delicatessen tucked away in a cobblestoned street. They had the most incredible charcuterie selection. With my tummy full and heart content, I bid farewell to Milan.
Reflecting on my Milanese Whirlwind
Milan has captivated me yet again! It's the kind of city that never fails to make me feel both grounded and inspired. The romance of this city flows through its historic streets, echoes in the music of its theatres, and sparkles in the eyes of its passionate citizens.
With each new adventure in this fabulous fashion capital, my love for ballet grows, and my love for pink tutus (naturally!) flourishes. As I continue my travels, I strive to spread the message of kindness, self-expression, and yes, wearing those vibrant pink tutus, no matter what anyone else says! After all, isn’t it our differences that make us unique, beautiful, and undeniably bold? And isn’t it the joy of wearing something bright and whimsical that truly brings out our inner twirling, leaping, and free-spirited self?
Till next week, my lovelies!
Remember to check in next Monday for more of my pink-tinted adventures from all around the world, and stay twirling!
XOXO, Emma
