Pink Tutu Milan - Post #1145 - 17th May 2017

Buongiorno, my dearest tutu-lovers! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, writing to you live from the vibrant streets of Milan, Italy. The sun is shining, the gelato is calling, and I've just emerged from a truly glorious ballet class – a delightful blend of barre work, graceful leaps, and plenty of giggles (who doesn't love a little ballet banter?).

I must confess, I've been a little obsessed with Milan since my first trip a few years ago. This city truly has it all: exquisite architecture, the most incredible shopping, a rich history that breathes from every corner, and, of course, exceptional ballet! This time, I'm on a mission to explore its lesser-known treasures – those hidden gems that give Milan its undeniable magic.

But before I get ahead of myself, let me tell you all about my morning's adventure. I've found myself a delightful little dance studio nestled in the heart of the Brera district. Tucked away from the bustling crowds, this haven of grace and elegance boasts high ceilings, warm lighting, and a mirrored wall that could rival the grandeur of a Venetian palazzo! And if the atmosphere wasn't enough to melt your ballet heart, the instructor – a charming young man with the grace of a gazelle and the strength of a lion (okay, maybe not quite a lion – but you get the picture!) - made the entire experience truly unforgettable.

After the class, I had the best ‘café con latte’ ever! You can always judge a city by its coffee, don't you think? I sipped my creamy goodness whilst catching up on some emails. Oh, and maybe trying on the few beautiful hats I had found at a fabulous millinery shop just around the corner. You know how I am! Gotta be on trend, my darlings!

Speaking of trend, let's talk tutus! While my dance class didn’t quite warrant a full-blown pink tutu (alas, there are some limitations even for a die-hard pink tutu lover like me!), I decided to dress up my ensemble with a pink ribbon on my hair, just for the occasion. The locals stared a bit, and I might have seen a few cheeky smiles. Oh well, that’s what happens when you’re living life to the fullest, and for me, a good ol’ fashioned pink tutu look never goes amiss!

Of course, no trip to Milan is complete without a foray into its divine fashion scene. Later this afternoon, I’m off to visit a vintage boutique I’ve been wanting to check out ever since I stumbled upon it during my first visit. This hidden gem is bursting with designer pieces, many at unbelievably affordable prices. Fingers crossed for a few vintage treasures!

While the lure of fashion is undoubtedly strong, there’s more to this fabulous city than haute couture. Tomorrow, I’m venturing to the Sforza Castle, one of Milan's iconic landmarks. Built in the 14th century, this fortress is a testament to Milan's rich history. Imagine strolling through its courtyard, admiring the intricately carved stonework, and envisioning the knights and princesses who once graced these hallowed halls. A true feast for the senses!

Now, I’ve heard that Milan boasts a beautiful public transportation system – think tram lines and historical trains – that connect the city's most charming neighborhoods. It's no secret that I love riding trams! I just adore the way the windows offer you a unique window into local life, especially when they have those lovely old-fashioned wooden benches – the perfect perch for a pink-tutu-wearing ballerina to observe the world go by! Tomorrow, I'm hoping to snap a few pics of these beautiful machines as they traverse the cobblestone streets – after all, you can’t take a proper trip to Milan without documenting your journey! Who knows, I might even discover a few hidden gems along the way!

Speaking of Milanese treasures, I have to share this gorgeous ballet performance I saw at La Scala. This opulent opera house was the perfect setting for an extraordinary production of Swan Lake. The choreography was breath-taking, the dancers absolutely mesmerising – they soared, they swirled, they told a story without a single spoken word. It was divine – the kind of ballet experience you dream about, with its beautiful costumes and enchanting storytelling. Every detail, every moment, every glance was a sheer delight.

Now, I know you are dying to know what I wore, right? Well, my pink tutu wouldn't quite cut it in such an elegant venue (though I do always wish I could bring a pink tutu everywhere, just to brighten up everyone's day, you know! Imagine, "Hello there! Enjoy your afternoon tea! You look fantastic today! Let me add a touch of sparkle!" – well, perhaps not quite! chuckles) But, you'll be pleased to know I embraced a feminine pink ensemble. A beautiful lace skirt with a very pale pink lace blouse paired with an old ballet slipper necklace and – wouldn’t you know it? – the perfect shade of lipstick to complement the occasion!

Of course, no visit to Milan would be complete without a little shopping, wouldn't you say? This city is a mecca for fashionistas. It has the perfect mix of designer stores and quaint boutiques selling vintage finds. As for myself? Well, you can imagine that I've already spent hours wandering around, marveling at the creativity on display! And yes, I've already snagged a few pieces – including a beautiful silk scarf (in shades of blush pink, of course!).

You know what, let’s talk about pink for a moment, shall we? Because pink is more than just a colour, darlings, it's a whole attitude, a philosophy of life, an anthem to joy and optimism! Pink tutus? It’s just one part of a greater message of empowerment, of embracing your own unique beauty. Think pink tutus, pink ribbons, a little pink in your wardrobe. Let's paint the world with joyful splashes of pink!

For today’s look though, it's more about a sombre palette. Milan offers a beautiful contrast between the luxurious and the rough around the edges. For that reason, I've paired a vintage denim jacket with a cream flowing midi skirt and a bright orange silk scarf to add a burst of sunshine, as always! I found these beauties in a wonderful second hand market – it's all about thrifting and saving our pennies when it comes to fashion and tutus!

You can imagine I have been eating well too, and as a ballet dancer, a good diet is crucial! Now, as any Derbyshire girl knows, the best bread in the world is a freshly baked loaf. Milan is known for its culinary excellence and has some delightful artisanal bakeries that serve the most heavenly bread! A little bread, and the most fabulous cheese and salami, paired with fresh fruit and delicious cappuccinos are truly the fuel of life!

Tonight, I’m thinking of seeing a local performance at a small theater tucked away in the labyrinthine streets. And I'm wondering if the theatre will have a stage big enough for my grand, theatrical Pink Tutu finale, as part of my campaign to get everyone to wear a pink tutu. Fingers crossed, darlings! Maybe one day soon I can bring you a blog post from a Pink Tutu Party!

For now, it's time to explore the hidden wonders of Milan and bask in the sunshine. If you happen to be in town, be sure to join me on this amazing journey. And if not, don't worry, I'll be sure to share every adventure with you! Remember, dear ones, always be bold, always be vibrant, and always remember: a pink tutu makes everything better!

Stay tuned for next week's adventures,

Your pink-tutu-lovin', Milan-explorerin' Emma!
