Pink Tutu Milan #1201: A Whirlwind of Pink in the City of Fashion!

Hello, my darling dance enthusiasts! Emma here, back from another magical adventure, this time with a touch of Italian flair. Yes, I'm in Milan, the city that makes my fashionista heart beat faster than a double pirouette! This week's blog is a celebration of all things pink, sparkly, and beautiful, because that's what Milan is to me – a living, breathing dream of sequins and elegance.

But before I start gushing about the fabulous boutiques and delicious gelato, I need to tell you about my journey! As you know, my passion for ballet and pink tutus allows me to travel the world, funding my trips through performances. This time, I journeyed to Milan from beautiful, breezy Derbyshire via train, a mode of travel I adore for its window-seat views of the passing landscape and the chance to lose myself in a good book. (Spoiler alert, I'm reading a biography about the fascinating Coco Chanel.)

My arrival in Milan was met with a warm breeze and the enchanting scent of freshly brewed coffee. The train station felt electric, a buzzing hub of people, luggage, and stories. As I walked through the bustling streets towards my charming Airbnb (which, I must tell you, is only two tram stops from the world-famous Teatro alla Scala!), I felt that familiar thrumming excitement, the one that whispers, "Emma, you're about to have a magical adventure!"

And Milan did not disappoint! The first thing I did after unpacking was hop onto the tram, because even though Milan has a beautiful metro, I adore trams for their whimsical nature. They clatter and clink along the rails, gliding past cafes brimming with laughter and street performers filling the air with music.

Of course, I couldn't visit Milan without exploring its iconic landmarks. First on my list: Duomo Square, the beating heart of the city! I felt as if I'd stepped into a history book as I gazed up at the magnificent Duomo cathedral. Its white marble facade, intricate sculptures, and majestic spires left me awestruck.

My tip: Take the stairs up the dome! The view of the city from above is breathtaking, and the panoramic sweep makes the walk absolutely worthwhile. Trust me, the tiny, narrow stairs are worth the view. Plus, my pink tutu was quite the talking point among the tourists – so much fun!

Later that day, I treated myself to a leisurely stroll down Via Montenapoleone, Milan's exclusive shopping haven. The shop windows were filled with exquisite displays of haute couture, handbags, shoes, and jewellery. Each shop felt like a work of art, designed to tempt the senses. I’m saving up my earnings for that new dress I’ve seen in a window, I simply HAVE to have it!

After some window-shopping and a delicious ice-cream break (because, come on, one can never resist!), I discovered a quaint tea room tucked away on a charming side street. I savoured a pot of Earl Grey and indulged in the most decadent piece of raspberry cake while working on my blog for the day, which is actually this one you’re reading now!

One of my favorite moments this week, however, was stumbling upon a small ballet class at the back of an arts centre in a residential district. Seeing those ballerinas, both young and older, gracefully navigating their steps, their pink tutus swishing around them as they pirouetted, brought a wave of joy washing over me. It’s so wonderful seeing the shared passion for ballet everywhere I travel! It just confirms that the love of ballet transcends borders.

Even though Milan is famous for its fashion, you can see this same love of beautiful things in the details. The stunning buildings with intricate details, the delicate florists in vibrant colours, the artistic flair of its street performers. The love of elegance just bursts from every corner of this city, and it’s utterly infectious. I feel I can see this mirrored in its art.

Speaking of art, I took in a mesmerizing performance by the Teatro alla Scala (one of my most prized experiences this week!) the other night. I chose to see “Giselle," a romantic ballet filled with exquisite choreography, flowing lines, and hauntingly beautiful music. The story unfolded beautifully on stage, making me sigh with delight, and my heart skip a beat at the dramatic moments! It is something that I will never forget.

Milan also hosts a beautiful array of public performances and concerts around the city. Tonight, a small string quartet played on a cobbled courtyard under the summer twilight. Their elegant music danced around me as I drank my local cappuccino, feeling so blessed to be in a city where art, fashion, and life merge so perfectly.

Oh, I nearly forgot, this Wednesday, June 13th, was a whirlwind! I began with a private performance in a garden, and it’s the performance of a lifetime so far – to have a whole garden full of flowers swaying as I perform ballet is such a blessing.

Later, I indulged in another fantastic food experience at a trendy pizza restaurant where I tried (and devoured) an extraordinary selection of pizzas - including one with truffle and mushrooms, divine! And of course, I treated myself to a large, glass of pink Prosecco – it was a perfectly pink day in every sense!

Speaking of pink, I had an impromptu photo shoot on Milan’s Cathedral Square at sunset. The beautiful, soft golden glow of the evening sunlight hitting my pink tutu made the scene absolutely breathtaking! You can catch some of those pictures on my website, and let me know if you’re my favorite!

I'm sure you’re all dying to hear this…my newest goal is to convince EVERYONE in Milan to wear pink tutus! It seems to be a bit of a challenge! It would make such a charming sight to see the entire city dressed in pink tutus, don’t you think? But the Milanese have quite the flamboyant style, so maybe my wish might come true after all. I know you're with me on this, my darlings, because the world is a better, brighter place with a dash of pink!

Before I bid you adieu, let me offer a few pieces of advice:

  1. Eat: Indulge in the delicious Italian cuisine! Try everything – from pizzas and pastas to gelatos and pastries – but don't forget to try some Pink Grapefruit Aperol Spritzes!

  2. Explore: Milan has so much to offer, and beyond the iconic attractions, there are hidden gems waiting to be discovered – like those little bakeries on quiet side streets that make the most divine cakes.

  3. Live it Up: Enjoy every minute in this enchanting city. Take in the sights, sounds, and energy, and let the city work its magic on you.

  4. Remember: Travel is a gift – savour each experience and don't forget to take lots of pictures for me to see!

As always, thank you for joining me on this journey. Remember, wear your pink tutus proudly, spread kindness and grace wherever you go, and most importantly, never stop dancing! Until next time, darling dance enthusiasts, keep spinning!

Lots of love,

Emma xoxo
