It’s Emma here, your favourite pink tutu wearing ballerina, reporting live from the fashion capital of the world – Milan, Italia! This week, I’m diving headfirst into the world of Italian theatre, exploring the city’s most beautiful dance studios, and of course, indulging in some fabulous shopping sprees!
Life on the Rails
As always, my adventure started with a journey by train. I’m not afraid to admit I’m a bit of a train enthusiast! I love the way it smoothly glides across the tracks, taking me on new and exciting journeys. The views from the window are like a magical slideshow – today, I was transported through fields of sunshine yellow wildflowers and charming little villages that seemed frozen in time. And, just as exciting, I spotted a fellow traveller with a pink tutu – she wasn’t quite as bold as my pink tutu, but I definitely approved of her pink ribbon tied in her hair! Perhaps I'll stop her next time for a little chat about tutu-wearing on public transport.
Milano Centrale – My Starting Point
My arrival at Milano Centrale felt like stepping into a fairytale. This grand train station is a work of art, its vaulted ceilings soaring sky high and beautiful mosaics covering the floors. I grabbed my trusty pink suitcase and set off on a mission to find the nearest tram stop, ready to explore! The tram journey, a mix of buzzing streets and charming little squares, was the perfect way to absorb the Milanese atmosphere. The streets seemed to hum with excitement, the shops showcasing a stunning display of vibrant colours and the sound of Italian chatter filled the air.
Dance & Delicious
Once settled into my little hotel room with its oh-so-French balcony (it looks over a charming cobblestone street), I couldn’t resist donning my pink tutu for a little exploration. Today’s ballet adventures began at the renowned Teatro alla Scala – home to some of the world’s most famous ballet performances! While not performing, I decided to treat myself to a coffee in the exquisite Cafe's Bistrot inside. As I sipped my cappuccino, watching the elegant ballet dancers effortlessly glide through the grand hall, I realised I had come to the right place!
After indulging in the delicate delights of an authentic Italian gelato, I took a break at my favourite ballet studio. As soon as I saw the worn-out floor, the faded posters advertising past performances, and the worn, comfortable atmosphere, I knew this place was where dreams were made. As I glided across the floor in my pink tutu, I imagined I was dancing amongst legends of the past, and felt so much creative energy within my being.
The Pink Tutu Challenge – Shopping in Milano
You know I can’t resist a shopping spree! Milano is a fashionista’s paradise. Every shop window seems to hold the latest trends and I just had to dive in and discover! But, this week, my mission is to find the perfect pink outfit for the Teatro alla Scala’s Grand Ballet Opening Night. I have been dreaming of a fabulous, flamboyant tulle ballgown with feathers and maybe a touch of sparkle. Let’s hope I can find something suitable in the depths of the Italian fashion district.
So far, my search has taken me to some of the most gorgeous boutiques, each a piece of art in itself! I found an absolutely divine silk shawl in a shade of dusty pink with hand-sewn floral motifs that I simply couldn't resist. Imagine my delight when I also stumbled upon the most stunning antique shop with a collection of beautiful, vintage ballet tutus. The fabric and details are simply exquisite! I'm sure I can work my magic on one of those treasures, bringing it back to its original grandeur.
Teatro alla Scala’s Grand Ballet Opening Night
Tonight is the night I have been waiting for. I will be attending the grand opening night of the Teatro alla Scala’s ballet season and have a date with destiny. You see, I will be wearing a custom-designed, pink tutu – a collaboration with the talented costume designer at La Scala’s Academy!
My imagination runs wild with possibilities. I am picturing myself gliding into the theatre, the bright pink tutu twirling gracefully around my ankles as the lights illuminate its sparkling details. The audience will be mesmerized as they take in the delicate fabric and intricate embroidery, each stitch adding to the air of elegance and grandeur.
Imagine my delight at receiving a message from a fellow dancer at La Scala. I cannot tell you much at the moment because it is top secret! All I can say is she has invited me to share in an exclusive "dress rehearsal", a unique opportunity to get behind the scenes of Teatro alla Scala before tonight's show. I'm truly excited. This might just be the highlight of my entire Italian trip!
Food, Glorious Food
Italy has completely won me over with its fabulous food scene! It’s like every meal is an explosion of taste and texture. Yesterday, I fell in love with a traditional Tortelli di Zucca – little pasta parcels stuffed with pumpkin, parmesan cheese, and nutmeg, drizzled with melted butter. It was divine! And today I am savouring a Ricotta and Spinach Pizza that is almost too beautiful to eat – although I know I’ll happily eat every slice!
I simply adore the Italian way of life – slow, relaxed, and all about savouring the moment! I find that in this Italian world, people love to chat, relax in the piazzas, enjoy a glass of wine and laughter and, of course, spend time in the kitchen making delicious food. I am beginning to get a feel for this dolce vita and finding my inner calm amidst the excitement and charm of this vibrant city.
