Pink Tutu Milan - #1334: New Year's Eve in the City of Fashion!

Wednesday, 30th December 2020

Ciao bella!

It's Emma here, reporting live from Milan, the city of fashion, food, and of course, fabulousness! The last week has been a whirlwind of tutus, train rides, and the most scrumptious pasta you can imagine (seriously, I'm going to need a special suitcase just for all the leftover spaghetti I'm planning to bring back with me).

I'm actually typing this from a little cafe nestled between the grand Duomo and the elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, sipping on a rich hot chocolate with whipped cream and thinking about the exciting adventures to come. Today was a busy day filled with discovering the magic of Milan and let me tell you, it was full of the kind of pink-tastic surprises that make my tutu twirl with delight!

As always, my morning started with a ballet class. This one, though, was different. Instead of my usual spot at the Derbyshire Ballet Academy, I found myself in a beautiful studio overlooking the city's bustling Piazza della Repubblica. The dancers were from all over the world, and we even had a special guest – the world-famous prima ballerina, Sophia Bellini. Imagine my surprise when she greeted me with a “Buongiorno Emma!” as if we were old friends. Now that's what I call a proper Italian welcome!

The lesson itself was absolutely inspiring, focusing on contemporary movements that flowed effortlessly like a silk ribbon. It felt incredible to dance with such passionate and skilled dancers, all while enjoying a magnificent view of the city. This really was the perfect way to start the day.

But the magic wasn't over! After class, I decided to wander through the city’s famous fashion district. Oh, Milan, how you enchant me with your boutiques and high-end department stores! It was like stepping into a world where dreams are made of silk and sequins. Every corner held a different, delicious treat for my eyes: vibrant window displays, glittering showrooms, and racks filled with the most gorgeous outfits you can imagine. And of course, the main focus was on my absolute favourite colour: Pink! There was so much pink on display it was practically a pink tutu overload. I even found the most divine pink cashmere cardigan (with matching hat) that I just couldn’t resist buying! I can already imagine pairing it with my tulle skirt, adding a pop of vibrant pink against a soft winter sky… dreamy sigh.

And talking of pop, I had to have my obligatory gelato. It just wouldn't be a day in Italy without indulging in that delicious Italian ice-cream, especially after all that walking around. My pick was pistachio – the best pistachio gelato I've ever tasted. But, the most surprising part was, I didn't actually have to hunt for it! Turns out, gelato stalls are practically as common in Milan as flower stalls, found everywhere, from chic shopping streets to busy tram stops. How fabulous!

Next on my agenda was something truly unique – I joined a guided tour of the Teatro alla Scala, one of the most iconic opera houses in the world. I was surprised by just how grand it was; with gilded ceilings, intricate carvings, and velvet-lined boxes, it truly was fit for a king and queen! I imagined myself onstage in my favourite pink tutu, the audience mesmerised by every twirl, every pirouette, every elegant plie. And guess what? You know my luck! I got to stand in the centre of the stage and do a quick dance to 'Swan Lake'. I have a sneaky suspicion that's not allowed, but I thought it was a nice little dance interlude between the tour guide talking about its history and its architectural genius. It even ended with a dramatic final pose with one leg extended, toe pointed and arms held high… a little dramatic, I know, but I couldn’t resist.

Of course, any trip to Milan would be incomplete without indulging in its world-renowned fashion scene. But instead of splurging on the designer labels this time, I decided to explore the vintage markets. You wouldn't believe what I found! There was this beautiful, shimmering sequined top from the 1950s, a perfect shade of pink, of course, with the most stunning beadwork imaginable. It's like it was meant to be in my wardrobe! And to make the experience even more special, the vendor told me that the top was originally worn by a famous actress! I mean, can you imagine? I'm practically walking in her sparkly, glamorous footsteps!

Now, a truly delightful twist to this shopping trip, was the friendly chat I had with the lady who sold it to me. She gave me some fascinating insights into the world of vintage fashion in Milan. I found out that the city's streets are bursting with unique boutiques and hidden gems just waiting to be discovered! Turns out I’d been wrong thinking it was only a designer shopping experience. I have a list of shops for my next visit! And of course, I already had a new goal to find myself a vintage tutu... just for fun, I told myself!

For a final festive flourish, I indulged in a delicious feast at the vibrant and enchanting Christmas Market near Piazza Duomo. There was something special about watching people light up at the sight of sparkling decorations, the delicious smells wafting from the food stalls, and the general buzz of excitement filling the air. Honestly, there’s nothing better than a festive Christmas market! This was the perfect way to cap off a perfect day in Milan!

Speaking of Christmas markets, Milan truly knows how to create a magical Christmas atmosphere. It's filled with twinkling lights, sparkling trees, and enchanting decorations. And don't even get me started on the delicious traditional treats! Think steaming mugs of spiced wine, fluffy waffles, and my absolute favourite, creamy panettone. Honestly, I need to find a way to bring some of that magic home with me!

So here we are at the end of another amazing day. You might think with all that shopping and sightseeing, I'd be completely exhausted. But honestly, I just feel filled to the brim with the kind of happiness that only a trip to Milan can bring. This truly is the perfect city for a pink tutu loving ballerina! And the thought of experiencing a magical New Year's Eve in this beautiful city brings a special twirl of excitement!

New Year's Eve in Milan… what's a girl to do?!

Right now, I'm back at the beautiful boutique hotel I'm staying in. After all the fun today, the beautiful, twinkling, city lights can be seen from my window and its balcony, as I take some time to reflect. I can’t help but get caught up in the magic that seems to fill every corner of this city, It's a magical time to be in Milan. It truly does have that special kind of magic that makes me want to dance on clouds. And, guess what, I'm planning a little ballet performance right here in the hotel ballroom for all the other guests, just because! I mean, why not? The only thing missing from this city right now, is pink tutus. But it's ok, that's what I'm here for!

Oh! Did I mention my plans for New Year's Eve? It's going to be spectacular! Imagine watching the fireworks explode over the skyline of this dazzling city, all while dancing to a symphony of colours. There will be a countdown, a champagne toast, and of course, lots and lots of dancing! This is how the Italians do it!

Until then, I'll be savouring the warmth of this beautiful city and spreading some pink tutu love everywhere I go. And remember, you can find out what I'm up to throughout my Milan adventure by following me on all my social channels: Twitter, Instagram and, of course, our Pink-Tutu community at www.pink-tutu.com .

Don't forget to twirl!

Emma

P.S. Did I tell you about the spectacular pink, silver and gold, sequined dress I found in a small boutique, nestled amongst all the designer stores? It practically danced its way onto my hanger. Just picture it... with my pink tutu on top… What a picture, eh? Let’s just say that it’s just begging for its own blog post!
