Pink Tutu Milan #1414: Ciao Bella! From Derbyshire to Milan: A Week of Ballet Bliss!

Buongiorno, darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu enthusiast, broadcasting live from the glamorous streets of Milan, Italy. As always, I'm positively buzzing with excitement about my latest adventures in the land of fashion, ballet, and beautiful trams. This week has been a whirlwind of breathtaking performances, enchanting boutiques, and delicious pasta (that last bit is always a given in Italy!), but more on that later.

First, let me confess: I’ve always been a bit obsessed with Italy. From the delicious aromas of freshly baked pastries to the intricate designs of the Baroque architecture, every corner of this country sings with a passionate energy that simply sweeps me off my feet. Add in the unparalleled ballet scene, and it's no surprise Milan has quickly become one of my favourite destinations.

Speaking of ballet, this trip is all about embracing the magic of the dance. I've got my eye on several breathtaking performances, from a spectacular staging of Swan Lake at the Teatro alla Scala to an experimental contemporary piece at the Teatro Studio Melato. I’m going to be like a giddy little ballet fairy buzzing around town, taking in as much as possible! I even plan to check out a few ballet classes in Milan's bustling studios. A little ballet training on my travels never hurt anyone, right? Especially not a pink tutu-wearing girl like me.

But enough about my dance card - let’s get into the nitty-gritty of my fabulous Milan itinerary. Today's post is packed with adventures from the past week, so grab a cuppa (or an espresso, if you're in Milan!), settle in, and get ready to be whisked away!

Wednesday: Stepping into Milanese Magic

After a quick and pleasant journey from my home in Derbyshire via a very stylish train ride (yes, I do wear my pink tutu even on public transport, why wouldn't I!), I arrived in Milan feeling like a princess stepping out of a fairytale. It's amazing how a change of scenery can instantly boost your mood, especially when you’re surrounded by so much beauty.

After checking into a charming boutique hotel right near the heart of Milan, my very first stop was naturally the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Think elegant glass ceilings, luxury boutiques galore, and enough fashion inspiration to last a lifetime. This majestic shopping arcade is a feast for the eyes and truly the perfect way to kick off any Italian adventure.

I confess I indulged in a spot of retail therapy there - couldn't resist picking up a couple of stunning new accessories to add to my ballet-themed wardrobe. Imagine a delicate pearl necklace for the elegant Swan Lake performance I'm going to, or a pair of shimmering rose-gold ballet flats perfect for waltzing through the cobblestone streets - divine, wouldn't you say?

To end the day, I ventured into Brera – the charming artistic heart of Milan, overflowing with bohemian shops and trendy cafes. Imagine the chicest of boutiques, the tastiest of Italian restaurants, and a bohemian energy that simply oozes coolness. This neighbourhood is truly the heart of Milan's creative soul, with street art murals adding a vibrant splash of colour to the scenery.

And, as evening descended, I made my way to a quaint little trattoria tucked away in a hidden alleyway, tucked away from the bustling tourist crowds. The aroma of basil and garlic danced through the air as I savored a simple but absolutely delicious spaghetti with pomodoro sauce. Heaven!

Thursday: Exploring Milan's Ballet Scene

Thursday was a whirlwind of ballet brilliance! I started the day by catching a matinee performance at the Teatro alla Scala, and let me tell you, the whole experience was utterly magical. I don't want to spoil anything, but the beauty, grace, and passion on stage had me completely captivated. There were even some delightful moments of dramatic flair and comedic interludes that kept the whole audience enthralled. My heart was beating in my chest like a delicate dancer’s feet on stage! The ballet truly transported me to another world, a world of fairy tales, dreams, and endless beauty. And to top it all off, I even scored an autograph from one of the principal dancers afterwards!

I couldn’t let the ballet vibes dissipate so later that afternoon, I joined a ballet class in a little studio hidden behind a cafe. I'm no prima ballerina, but the sheer joy of dancing among passionate individuals brought a warmth to my heart. The class was focused on exploring flexibility and graceful movements. We moved through a beautiful flow of ballet techniques – “Arabesques,” “Pirouettes”, “Grand Battements”, even "Cabrioles!" All with our pink tutus twinkling beneath the spotlights! Just like in any ballet studio, all my inhibitions were left at the door and there we were – beautiful souls, swaying to the rhythm of a magical afternoon!

After class, I walked the short distance to the charming Naviglio Grande canal. Lined with charming restaurants, cobblestone walkways, and charming old bridges, this romantic spot is the perfect place to take a stroll after a day of exploring the ballet world.

Friday: A Fashionable Feast in the Quadrilatero della Moda

Friday, darlings, was all about indulgence! Where better to pamper oneself than in the luxurious heart of the Quadrilatero della Moda, Milan’s fashion district. Forget everything you know about a busy high street in your home town! Here, I'm talking high-end boutiques, designers, ateliers - a kaleidoscope of couture couture fashion from Prada, Gucci, and Armani. This street alone could easily fill up several shopping-related blog posts on its own! And oh my goodness, have you seen those beautiful displays? Just dazzling. It’s like being inside one of those fairytale worlds!

Naturally, I had to treat myself to a new dress and matching pair of ballet flats for tonight's show - an intimate, experimental performance by a rising contemporary choreographer. (What can I say, I’m all about supporting new talent, especially if they’re taking dance to the next level!) I can't tell you how excited I am about this one; experimental pieces are my favourite.

And the best part about shopping? You simply MUST grab a creamy gelato while you wander. The Italian gelaterias never disappoint, it's an absolute ritual! I opted for a creamy strawberry gelato topped with delicate pistachio flakes. Pure perfection. Oh, don't forget the sparkling Prosecco! A truly heavenly moment.

Saturday: The Magic of Teatro Studio Melato

I have to confess, I’m slightly addicted to going to ballet. I can't imagine my life without a touch of balletic magic in it, can you? Today, the Teatro Studio Melato is where the magic happens.

It's such a treat to catch a smaller, more intimate show, You really feel like you are being transported into a hidden secret garden. I love those moments where you’re right on top of the performers, the feeling of intense energy radiating off them. I especially love to observe their facial expressions – you see so much passion!

The show today was modern and challenging, pushing the boundaries of ballet tradition. I felt the raw emotion and innovative choreography seep into my soul, sparking thoughts and dreams I never imagined! And if you've ever experienced the incredible power of a performance, you know what I mean! These smaller theatres bring that energy into an intimate setting and truly deliver an intimate artistic experience. There is no space for complacency here, it's pure artistry.

Afterwards, I treated myself to dinner in an authentic trattoria with friendly staff and the best spaghetti carbonara I have ever tasted in my life!

Sunday: Funday Milan-Style!

What’s a better way to end your weekend than a little fun? Today, my friends, I’m going all out!

The morning started with a stroll through Parco Sempione. A huge open space perfect for stretching your legs or practicing a few "pirouettes" to the rhythm of the birds singing overhead! (Yes, that's me, still practicing my ballet even on vacation!)

For a Sunday lunch, I opted for a light, delicious and simple bowl of pasta at a local trattoria in Brera, the charming and arty part of Milan I told you about yesterday!

The highlight of my afternoon was an incredible shopping spree for new dance shoes and accessories, of course. I scored a gorgeous new pair of rose gold ballet flats that will go perfectly with my newest pink tutu. They are absolutely divine! And of course, I picked up some fun new costume accessories – what's a pink tutu girl without a fabulous wardrobe?

To finish the weekend in style, I'm catching a film at a gorgeous outdoor cinema in Parco Sempione. The weather has been perfect this week – and the sun’s still shining! I'm grabbing some tasty gelato before taking my seat under the stars! Don't worry, I’m going for something classic tonight. An old black and white masterpiece. Maybe “Singin' in the Rain”!
