Buongiorno, my lovely readers! It’s Emma, your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina, here from the heart of Milan. The cobblestones are gleaming under the Tuscan sun, and the air is buzzing with the chatter of tourists and the melodious rhythm of Italian life.
I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to be in Milan. This city just vibrates with life. I am, of course, here for a mix of work and play - some lovely ballet gigs, some heavenly shopping (especially for my new pink tutu collection), and a chance to soak up the artistic magic that surrounds me here.
Now, before we get into the glitz and glam, I just have to say a huge thank you for your incredible support on my last blog post! You've all been so sweet about my Derbyshire dance show. It really warmed my heart to see your comments on my #PinkTutuDerbyshire posts. Your positivity keeps me going, my darlings!
But enough about Derbyshire, let’s dive into my Milan adventures!
Day One: A Day of Chic & TwirlsThe moment I landed in Milan, I could feel the magic of fashion buzzing around me. I, of course, made a beeline for my favourite spot, a quaint little boutique just off Piazza Duomo. You wouldn’t believe the stunning pink tutus they have here. I’ve just ordered one with intricate floral embroidery – absolutely divine!
The best part? It came with a matching pink beret.
You know I couldn’t resist! Let's just say the shop assistant took several double takes as I tried on the tutu with a bright smile and a flurry of pirouettes!
I know you're all dying to see it, but I’m keeping my outfit a secret until my next blog post. It's going to be a spectacular one, my darlings!
After the most exquisite afternoon tea (delicious little pastries, I swear, the Italians have got the sweetness just right!), I headed to Teatro alla Scala. A real treat! The building is so beautiful, it takes my breath away. Tonight's performance was Romeo and Juliet – a classic, isn't it? The choreography was breathtaking, and the entire experience left me feeling wonderfully inspired.
I absolutely love attending ballets here. Milan has such a strong history of opera and ballet, and there's just this special, timeless energy you feel in the theatre. I felt like I was stepping back in time – a timeless elegance with a touch of romance. The performance was followed by a delightful evening stroll along the Naviglio Grande canal – oh, the cobbled streets, the canals, the beautiful bridge – all pure romance!
Day Two: A Masterclass of Dance & EleganceThis morning, I started my day with a beautiful ballet class in the heart of the city. It was held in this exquisite little studio with windows that overlooked a stunning courtyard filled with flowers and singing birds. It was magical! The class itself was challenging but invigorating - a perfect mix of technical finesse and grace. It's great to meet dancers from all over the world, all of us sharing the love for this beautiful art form.
I can already feel myself becoming more graceful and nimble - thanks to this class, my technique is flourishing. It’s the kind of class that you leave feeling lighter and brighter. A truly delightful way to start the day.
After the class, I popped by a charming little bakery nearby. The smell of fresh bread and coffee filled the air as I wandered through the aisles, their sweet scent mingling with the intoxicating perfume of freshly cut flowers. They have this incredible flaky pastry filled with a creamy ricotta and cherries…heavenly.
You've all got to know that every corner of Milan seems to have its own story, its own magic to share. I'm not even mentioning the incredible fashion - but let’s be honest, you wouldn't believe the shops I’ve already discovered, brimming with elegance and extravagance. Milan truly is a fashionista's dream!
Day Three: A Celebration of Street Dance and SparkleToday, my dear readers, was about letting loose and embracing the free spirit of street dance. Milan has this vibrant street art scene, which I love so much! It’s exciting, free-spirited, and constantly evolving - a stark contrast to the elegance and classical charm of Teatro alla Scala, yet just as inspiring.
I took a long stroll today along the Navigli - a string of canals that snake through the city, connecting its many districts and offering unique perspectives on the city's historical fabric. The banks are adorned with murals that bring a dash of colour and life to the streets.
This is what I adore about travelling: each city brings with it a new beat, a new vibe. I was lucky enough to stumble upon a group of young dancers in this fabulous hidden park that's dotted with street art - their dance moves were a stunning blend of street style and ballet elegance.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, I sat in the piazza, listening to the gentle hum of Italian chatter and watching a delightful scene unfold before me: children dancing on the cobblestones, mimicking their idols, a symphony of smiles and carefree joy. It's heartwarming to witness such passion in the most unexpected of places!
Oh, and guess what? There’s a street performance in a stunning setting of a palazzo just by the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. A breathtaking setting to see the local street art troupe performing. The colours and the music - a beautiful mix of the modern and the traditional!
You'll never guess where I ended the evening. Well, it would be hard to, given it’s one of my favourite spots here in Milan - Il Duomo. I spent some time simply gazing up at the stunning cathedral bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, reflecting on the beauty that surrounded me.
Day Four: A Day of Discovery and Delicious IndulgenceMy dearest readers, a confession. Today was a bit of a shopping frenzy - it was just too hard to resist. I know you love it, too, right? And we all need to fuel that passion, of course!
And, my darling readers, a pink tutu can never truly exist without an enchanting cafe to complement its essence, don't you agree? Today, I discovered the perfect place - La Pasticceria Marchesi, this iconic pastry shop that opened its doors in 1824! You simply must visit. They have exquisite gelato - pistachio is my current obsession. Oh, and their famous panettone? Well, let's just say it was like eating a little piece of heaven!
But Milan isn't just about food and fashion. It’s also a city rich with history. You know me, a little wander around the Palazzo Reale - a gorgeous royal palace brimming with artistic grandeur - never hurt anyone!
And who knew I'd get so engrossed in a hidden courtyard garden hidden away on one of the quiet side streets off of Via Montenapoleone. I discovered a tranquil, secret oasis amidst the hustle and bustle. A reminder that even in a bustling city, peace can be found - something that all you dancers know.
Day Five: Reflections on My Time in MilanAs I sit here on the terrace of my quaint little hotel in Milan, enjoying the view of the city below, I'm filled with a deep sense of joy.
These past days in Milan have been nothing short of magical. It’s been a whirlwind of fashion, dance, food, and breathtaking architecture - a vibrant mix of everything I love! My pink tutu has swirled around every cobbled street and touched the heart of this charming Italian city.
My time in Milan, for now, is coming to an end. It's time for me to move on, my next adventure is already calling. However, the magic of this city will always stay with me - a treasure I’ll carry in my heart long after I leave.
