Pink Tutu Milan: #1758 – Valentine's Day in the City of Love (Well, almost!)

Ciao, darlings!

The sun is shining, the birds are singing (or at least trying to, with all the construction going on), and the air smells of espresso and something vaguely delicious wafting out of a bakery nearby. I'm in Milan, of course, where the pavement is practically paved with glamour. It's a day for a little love – Valentine's Day! – and I'm surrounded by couples, beautiful boutiqe windows, and even the faintest aroma of romance hanging in the air (okay, maybe that's just the perfume coming from the ladies in front of me).

This week, however, Milan feels even more exciting than usual. It's Milan Fashion Week! This year it’s going to be one for the books, trust me on this one. And of course, I'm right in the heart of it all! I can't resist the temptation to take in some of the fashion shows, even if I'm just peeking in at the glamorous attendees through the windows, trying to get a glimpse of what's coming for the next season. I might even pop into one of the shows if I'm lucky enough to be on the guest list, fingers crossed!

But, what's fashion week without a touch of…ballet? This week, I'm combining my passions in the most delicious way: fashion, food, and ballet, all served up with a side of Italian sunshine.

Pink Tutu Power in Milan!

It's amazing to be back in Milano, I always feel so invigorated when I arrive here, and that feeling multiplies by 10 when I put on my pink tutu! Nothing shouts, “I'm here to dance!” quite like a tulle confection in the colour of love, and I love how the streets of Milan become a catwalk for my fabulous self. You know, a lot of you asked me if wearing a pink tutu around Milan might seem a bit…over the top…or perhaps, a tad unusual, especially during Fashion Week, Well, darlings, it absolutely does! But isn’t that what makes it so wonderful? You see, wearing my pink tutu is a reminder that we don't have to be serious all the time. We can bring a bit of playful sparkle to the world, even in a city as serious and sophisticated as Milan. And guess what, Milan is loving it! You can just tell, every smile I get, every nod and gentle compliment - I am really spreading the pink tutu love.

Speaking of Milan…

Did you know this city has the most beautiful tram lines?! You wouldn't think that the train tracks, concrete and metal could have such a charm but let me tell you, they do! I spent most of my journey to Milan on one, feeling like I'd travelled back in time. And what a way to start your adventure, sitting next to all these lovely locals! It's so nice to see that even in the most fashion-forward city, people still enjoy simple things. I even caught a glimpse of a couple of men in classic trench coats, looking as stylish as they could in their practical clothes.

Fashionable Feet…Onward!

My day started with a visit to the most luxurious department store – the kind that's fit for a princess, or at least, a ballet ballerina! And let me tell you, my darling friends, these shops were a delight. It’s an explosion of all things fashionable, but that wasn't even what struck me most. It was the energy! So much of the vibe here reminds me of the energy before a performance. The feeling of excitement, that anything is possible… There’s an undeniable sense of theatre in each department.

I wandered through the lingerie section - I do love a silk chemise or a delicate nightgown, what can I say? But it's not only the fabrics that are tempting – the whole process feels theatrical, a ballet of sorts! A graceful hand placing delicate fabric on display…an eye for detail so meticulous... Even the shop assistants with their elegant smiles…it’s just as much of a performance as anything else! I found myself transported to a ballet rehearsal where I could almost hear the pianist striking a note in my head as I glided from rack to rack. You could feel the artistry here, the excitement and the anticipation in the air – oh, how I love Milan!

Dancing into a New Passion…

As a fellow ballerina, you know it's hard to escape the call of the stage! So this week, I’m making a trip to one of Milan’s famed opera houses. You won't believe what I found! This place is straight out of a fairytale! It has this beautiful foyer and the most decadent marble staircase you've ever seen – perfect for twirling down, don't you think? Even if you weren’t going to see a ballet, it’s worth coming just to gaze around for a little while!

Speaking of ballet, this weekend, I was able to take in a fabulous ballet performance. They were doing "La Sylphide"! Oh, the grace, the leaps, the exquisite costumes - It's always a joy to see professional dancers in action. The stories that the ballet told on stage were so emotional - I actually found myself tearing up. It's a real testament to the power of ballet to move people, isn't it?

Afterwards, of course, I had to indulge in a delicious Italian dinner at a restaurant I found nestled down a side street, all cozy and warm. They had the most delectable gnocchi, a symphony of flavours that would even make a demanding ballerina swoon, and all served with a bottle of Italian wine – what could be more romantic?

Pink Tutu…Travels…And More Pink Tutu

I couldn't leave Italy without seeing Venice, so I hopped on the train – yes, you guessed it, the most charming little railway, with quaint windows and creaky old compartments. It felt like I’d travelled straight out of the Victorian era, my mind overflowing with visions of Belle Epoque Parisian romance.

You already know that I love a good journey, and let me tell you, this trip was no exception. There's something truly magical about taking a journey by train. There's an opportunity for serendipitous meetings, chance encounters with interesting characters. You meet everyone on a train, people with all different life stories and I think I always come back a little wiser after my rail journeys. You don’t need to plan to be spontaneous! It’s the journey, not just the destination that matters, darling.

My favourite spot was sitting by the window and watching the world roll by, so calm, so peaceful – the world just glides away from you. And then I can’t help but twirl in my pink tutu, the perfect way to embrace that spontaneous feeling of pure joy that traveling by train always gives me.

What's in Store Next Week, Darlings…

Next week, I'm heading to the next stage in my journey – Paris, oh Paris! What adventures will await me in the City of Light? A romantic rendezvous? A meeting with my favourite ballerina? I think I have a good feeling about it all. But as always, darlings, my pink tutu will be waiting for me, as it does, to bring a touch of whimsy and elegance to any place, any day! I will leave you all with some lovely photos from Milan.

See you next week on www.pink-tutu.com!
