Pink Tutu Milan: Post #1769 - Wednesday 2029-05-02 - Milan, My Darling!

Ciao, darlings! Emma here, your resident Pink Tutu ambassador, ready to whisk you away on another whirlwind journey through the magical metropolis that is Milan. Today, it’s Wednesday, the day my heart usually belongs to ballet class, but this week, I’m swapping pirouettes for palazzo windows and tutus for designer frocks, all in the name of exploring this Italian haven.

The morning sunshine was a sight to behold - so bright it practically matched my pink mood! I’ve learned a few things about Milan’s fashion scene since I arrived. For one, Milanese women have an eye for detail like nobody else. They seem to move through life as effortlessly chic as the wind billowing through a silk scarf. For another, their style is quite bold, and I love it! I feel completely in my element, and let’s face it, in Milan, everyone’s just a little bit fabulous! This city breathes and pulsates with style, fashion, and elegance.

A Tram Through Time

So, before you get the impression that this was all about designer boutiques (which it is - I promise!) I must tell you about my morning. I decided to leave my hotel a little later today, and with no specific plan, hopped on the iconic Milan tram - something that I never tire of doing, even after all these years in Italy. The Tram No. 1, I think.

It was a symphony of clicks and rattles - the music of a Milan morning. The tram chugged along, whisking me through streets that buzzed with a mix of tourist energy and local charm. There were cafes spilling onto cobblestones, shops bursting with colourful wares, and children chasing pigeons on the edge of the bustling sidewalks. The world was a vibrant tapestry of colours, textures, and stories, and for a while, I felt completely absorbed in it.

And, wouldn't you know it, who should be standing in the corner of the tram, but a gentleman in a top hat and a crisp suit with his tiny dog wearing a pink bandana! That's Milan for you. They love their dogs and love dressing them up too! That little detail just adds another layer of charm to a city already brimming with it!

Ballet and Beauty in Duomo Square

As I alighted from the tram, the spires of the Duomo rose majestically before me - a majestic beauty, forever etched in my memories. Standing at the foot of the Duomo was a sensation. It felt as though history and time swirled around me in a silent embrace, and the vibrant atmosphere of the city pulsated all around.

You wouldn't believe it, darlings, but in the heart of this bustling square, right outside the magnificent cathedral, a little dance academy was running classes! How magical is that? There was an older man, probably in his 60s, who was so graceful even though his movements seemed slower than the younger dancers. And I must say, he had a perfect posture and amazing turn-out. He made the older generations look incredibly stylish - as I like to think the older generations of ballet dancers actually are! They move like an elegant, captivating and powerful force - which is how I like to move across the dance floor. They are graceful as water, but so strong, too!

It was quite inspiring. I spent a few minutes soaking up the energy of the square, letting the sounds and the scene weave a little magic around me. The sight of people dancing, so near to the grand Duomo, was symbolic for me: a perfect blend of tradition, beauty, and passion.

And speaking of passion, if you know me, then you know that my soul is fueled by the fiery love of dance. And no matter where I am, ballet calls to me! The sight of those dancers moving, graceful as butterflies on the wind, gave me a fierce desire to feel the silk of my tutu twirling around my legs. To pirouette beneath the vast canvas of the Italian sky and feel the rhythm of music in my bones. Perhaps tomorrow, I will finally indulge my desire to find a ballet class in Milan. Who knows, maybe I'll even find some dancers to wear pink tutus for the occasion - that would be the ultimate!

The Art of Shopping in Milan

Now, every trip to Milan for a ballerina and a fashion lover like me wouldn’t be complete without a proper dive into the shopping scene! And oh my, what a shopping scene it is! From luxurious designer stores showcasing breathtaking collections, to small boutiques nestled along charming cobbled streets, there's an alluring “something” for everyone. Today, it’s about embracing that “something”, diving in with gusto, and losing myself in the intoxicating aroma of creativity, innovation, and exquisite craftsmanship!

Milan feels like a giant catwalk. It’s like you can just throw a stick out onto the pavement and hit a model on the way to their next shoot! There’s such a constant, chic, glamorous and effortless cool here in this beautiful, bustling city. It has an almost addictive effect that draws you in, so much so that, I caught myself eyeing that designer handbag I’ve had my eye on for ages! Oh, those leather purses, handbags, briefcases, totes… I think they are all beautifully made in Milan and there's definitely a place for them in my life! I’m also drawn to the bold designs and the rich materials used - there's a depth and a sophistication to Milan’s fashion scene. And I’ve got a sneaking suspicion, they may have some fab tutus hiding in these stores, if you know what I mean! I am certainly looking! I need one or two more for my dance performances, and as a fashionista, I will always want more tutus, but the perfect one needs to be in Milan, obviously!

There’s a certain elegance that shines through every window in this city, from the intricate craftsmanship of handcrafted leather goods, to the stunningly structured clothes in the shop windows and on the locals, there's an element of elegance, a love for quality and attention to detail.

Dinner with a View: La Scala Opera House

After hours of window shopping and gazing in admiration at the Milanese flair, I settled into a little café for lunch - something hearty to replenish my energy, naturally. There was a beautifully cooked pasta dish with lots of Parmesan on top. They certainly make some of the best in the world.

This evening I’m taking my love for Milan to the next level – I'm going to indulge my love for opera and enjoy a performance at the iconic Teatro alla Scala. This magnificent opera house, adorned with history and grandeur, promises an enchanting evening of melodies, costumes, and dazzling performances that will transport me to another world, one brimming with emotions, theatrics, and exquisite art.

Imagine: plush red velvet seats, glittering chandeliers casting a spellbinding glow over the opulent auditorium. The sweet melodies weaving their way through the air, pulling me into their spellbinding magic. As the curtains rise, and the stage transforms, I imagine feeling a tingle of excitement, the anticipation of something magical.

You'd think with so many beautiful things to see and do, I wouldn't find time for reflection in Milan. However, in all this buzz, in the heart of the bustling city, amidst the cacophony of sounds and colours, there are little moments that invite contemplation, moments for simply absorbing the ambiance of a place that breathes elegance and vibrancy into everything it touches. It’s these little pockets of reflection that keep my imagination sparked and inspire my artistic creativity - be it with a brush, with a pen or on a dance floor.

Back To Derbyshire, A Pink Tutu Ambassador

This afternoon I sent an email to the school I started ballet at back in Derbyshire - I promised I’d write them a blog post about Milan. They really did help me get started on this life-long love affair with the dance. I feel very grateful to them, so they were at the top of my mind today. I wonder if I could find some cute tutus that I could give them as a present!

I have been travelling a lot this last year – I’ve visited so many lovely cities in England, Wales, and now I am in Italy. It’s been amazing meeting new people who also love ballet as much as me! I can’t wait to see where next week will take me on my pink tutu journey! And, if you're planning a trip to Milan, feel free to send me a message. I’m always happy to share my favourite places and experiences. I know we are going to create memories that we can treasure forever!

Ciao bella, see you next week for another blog post!
