Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #64 - Monday 26th August 1996 - New York, New York! 🩰💖

Oh darling, I am simply giddy with excitement! New York City - the city that never sleeps! I've always dreamt of dancing my way through this concrete jungle, and this week, the dream became reality! I packed my brightest pink tutu (with extra layers of tulle for good measure, naturally), a suitcase bursting with fabulous frocks, and a heart brimming with anticipation.

The flight over was a whirl of excitement, but the moment I stepped off the plane and inhaled that quintessential New York air, a shiver of magic went right through me. I felt the energy of this city thrumming in my veins, like an orchestra of possibility playing just for me.

Ballet & Broadway - a divine double bill!

After dropping my suitcase at my darling little hotel in the heart of Greenwich Village, I headed straight to the legendary Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. They were performing a breathtaking production of "Revelations" – pure artistry and sheer brilliance! Every move was a masterpiece, every glance a story, every jump a flight of fancy. It left me feeling totally inspired and buzzing with an insatiable need to move.

Now, every good ballet enthusiast knows a visit to New York City isn't complete without a touch of Broadway magic. And, guess what? On the very same night, I saw "Rent" – the original production! I am a sucker for a good musical, and this show did not disappoint! It was raw, real, and absolutely enthralling. The music had me humming for days afterwards, and the story left me feeling deeply moved.

Taking to the streets and finding fashion treasures!

This week was all about soaking in the atmosphere of New York. It’s amazing to see people dancing on the streets, or in a park, or simply walking down the street to work - with absolutely no self-consciousness, and absolutely no inhibitions. I couldn’t help but grin at the sheer joyous spirit of it all!

So, armed with a trusty map and my trusty pink tutu, I embarked on a spree of street exploration. I fell in love with the cobbled streets of Greenwich Village, drank coffee on a sunny bench in Central Park, and wandered down Broadway until my feet were begging for mercy (don't worry, darling, a stylish pair of comfy shoes always comes with me!).

One of the highlights of my trip was discovering the world-famous garment district. Oh, my darlings, you wouldn't believe the absolute symphony of fabrics and textures! Swatches of velvet, silk, and lace danced before my eyes. I almost lost myself in a sea of sequins and beads - a true haven for a fashionista like me.

Speaking of fashion, darling, I just had to visit Bloomingdales - the iconic department store. You have to be prepared for crowds, my dears, but if you’re on the hunt for unique finds, it’s a definite must-visit! I even found a couple of new additions for my wardrobe – a stylish pink scarf and a sparkling silver clutch (for the perfect touch of glamour!).

The magic of the Metro and an unforgettable moment

Oh darling, the New York subway is a truly unique experience! Imagine travelling beneath the bustling city, with its tapestry of sounds, scents, and vibrant faces. I may be from a tiny village in Derbyshire, but the metro had me hooked instantly! It felt like a grand underground dance floor!

While zipping through the subway, I had an incredible moment. I caught sight of a young girl, about seven years old, twirling down the aisle, her dress billowing behind her like a graceful ballet skirt. And darling, you guessed it - she was wearing a bright pink tutu! She saw me staring and smiled - a big, open, joyous smile - and it truly warmed my heart. For that brief moment, the entire carriage felt like a stage, and she, my darling little tutu-clad star, was centre stage!

Every day, a new discovery

New York City never ceases to amaze! The energy, the passion, the sheer artistry – it all weaves together a captivating symphony that has me absolutely smitten.

My trip was far too short - I could have easily spent another month exploring this amazing metropolis - but even in this whirlwind of a week, I experienced so much. It made me dream big, dance big, and, most importantly, love life big!

Until next time, New York! And, remember darlings - pink tutus are not just for the ballet stage, they're for life!

Love,

Emma xoxo
