Pink Tutu Blog NYC #102: New York, New York! (and a Whole Lotta Pink)
Hello, darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, writing to you from the heart of the Big Apple, New York City! It's Monday, 19th May, 1997, and the air is electric with possibility. Honestly, you can just feel it buzzing, even through my pink tutu and my brand new cherry blossom pink cardigan (which, by the way, was a complete steal at Bloomingdales! More on that later).
As you know, my quest to spread the joy of pink tutus is a global mission, and New York City is undeniably the perfect stage for this vibrant and oh-so-girlish fashion statement. From the iconic Fifth Avenue to the bustling streets of Greenwich Village, this city is alive with a sense of fashion that's both cutting edge and delightfully whimsical โ just like yours truly in my twirling pink tutu.
This week, I'm kicking things off with a visit to the New York City Ballet. Yes, darlings, it's a dream come true! I've been longing to see the graceful artistry of this world-renowned company since I was a little girl twirling in my own tiny pink tutu back in Derbyshire, England. My flight in was quite a bit more glamorous this time around (especially with my adorable new Louis Vuitton duffel bag that matches my tutu perfectly - just wait till you see the pictures!)
I'll be spending the day in a whirlwind of balletic brilliance, but fret not, my dears! I will be posting regular updates on my Instagram story. Speaking of which, you know how I always say that fashion and dance are intricately woven together? Well, let me tell you, New York City is where this adage really takes centre stage.
My shopping list is already overflowing with the names of iconic New York boutiques and designers, all vying for a spot in my wardrobe (and my upcoming posts, naturally!). There's a certain kind of stylish magic in this city. I can feel it calling out to me to find new, bold pieces, from elegant evening dresses for the opening night at the ballet to a fabulous new pair of shoes to pair with my tutu (perhaps something in a vibrant turquoise shade!).
Speaking of vibrant turquoise, darling, I have stumbled upon the most enchanting shop! The Metropolitan Opera House, now that is something special. Its architectural beauty simply takes my breath away. From the marble staircase to the opulent chandeliers, it's as if I've stepped into a fairytale. Imagine the elegance of those towering figures standing so still and proud! Such statuesque magnificence!
As for my plans, oh, I'm packed tight with excitement!
This afternoon, I'm taking a private ballet class in the heart of Manhattan. Think of it as a crash course in New York style, but for your posture! The teacher, a lovely lady named Madeline, tells me she was once a principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre. Can you imagine?! Just me, Madeline and the elegant art of ballet โ I'm giddy with anticipation.
Tomorrow, I have a whirlwind of theatre to experience, starting with the off-broadway production of "Cats." The reviews have been rave and you all know my affection for a good feline-themed spectacle. Oh, and the makeup and costumes will be phenomenal, I'm sure of it. The magic and whimsy of the performance are sure to inspire a couple of new outfit ideas (and a few cat-inspired tutus โ who knows!?). It is important for us all to feel our inner feline strut, wouldn't you agree?
Then it's on to the Broadway musical "The Phantom of the Opera." Imagine, a ghostly phantom and a glamorous opera singer! My little heart is fluttering just thinking about it. With music that takes you to another world and the dramatic costumes, I'm certain this performance will be simply magical. Oh, my love for the performing arts is overflowing right now.
Of course, no trip to New York City would be complete without indulging in some delicious delights! After all, fashion isn't just about clothes; it's about how they make us feel. That feeling extends to all the beautiful sights, sounds, and flavours of this amazing city!
Tonight, we're kicking off our gourmet exploration with a dinner at La Grenouille. I have to confess, Iโm a little nervous as it's one of New York's most esteemed French restaurants, but oh my! I can't wait to try their exquisite menu - just the name evokes a symphony of culinary excellence.
And I will, of course, be embracing my inner ballerina throughout the city. This isn't just a holiday for me, darlings, it's a pilgrimage. I'm not just going to see the sights; I'm going to be the sight. I'm going to take every opportunity to twirl, to spin, to express myself through dance, because New York City, you see, is the ultimate stage for a pink tutu.
I've heard a whisper about the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! What a magical event that is sure to be an inspiration for a future post.
For now, darlings, I'm going to grab myself a hot cup of chai and an oversized bagel (you know I have to keep up with all this excitement). I can't wait to share my New York City adventures with you, from the dazzling ballet performances to the hidden gems I discover in my whirlwind of fashion, food, and theatre.
So stay tuned, and don't forget: it's all about embracing the pink tutu and living your life with a twirl in your step. I hope to see you all in the comments section with your own tutu-filled dreams.
Yours in pink,
Emma xx
