#PinkTutuBlogNYC: A Midsummer Night's Dream in the Big Apple - Post 114!

Monday 1997-08-11

Greetings from the concrete jungle! I, your trusty #PinkTutuBlogger, have landed back in the vibrant vortex that is New York City. It feels like only yesterday I was waltzing across the stage in a Derbyshire village hall, performing for the summer fête. But that's the beauty of a ballerina's life – a whirlwind of travel, performance, and, of course, the insatiable need for a fab new pink tutu.

Speaking of fab new tutus, let's talk about the one I'm currently wearing! This number, a delicate blush tulle with intricate swirls of shimmering silver sequins, caught my eye in a little shop just off Fifth Avenue. It's just begging to be twirled in the bustling streets of the city. (If only those yellow taxis knew what they were missing!)

This trip has been a glorious kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and smells. Let me paint you a picture – the majestic skyline gleaming in the late summer sun, the joyous hum of a thousand stories in the air, the tantalising scent of hot dog stands wafting through the busy avenues... ah, New York!

The cherry on top of my NYC stay? Last night's performance at the iconic Metropolitan Opera House. Yes, you heard that right, the MET! This time, I was fortunate enough to perform as a dancer in the esteemed "Ballet of the Metropolitan." Imagine my glee – strutting my stuff in a glittering production of Swan Lake, to a thunderous applause, in one of the most famous theaters in the world!

You'll have to wait for next week's blog to get the inside scoop on my Met debut! For now, let me share the most glorious bits from my recent New York adventures:

A Fashion Fairy Tale

First stop after landing: a much-needed spree in the boutiques of SoHo. A vintage hat shop, bursting with floppy velvet hats and feathers that tickled my imagination, a tiny store brimming with shimmering vintage jewellery that begged to be adorned, and an elegant silk scarf emporium, where I found the perfect shade of lavender to match my new tutu... My shopping bag is still bursting with treasure!

Subway Swirls and City Sights

You know I love hopping on the metro – it's the beating heart of New York City! I couldn't resist capturing a few snaps of myself pirouetting in front of a vintage subway map mosaic. This is definitely a city that dances to its own beat, and its subway network reflects this beautifully. A real haven for the ballet-obsessed, it feels like one long stage set waiting for the next performance.

The Theatre Calling

I can't come to New York and not indulge in some live theatre. This time, I treated myself to a matinée performance of the brilliant "Into the Woods," at the fabulous Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center. The music, the story, the set design... absolutely spellbinding! I've been humming the tunes all week.

Food for the Soul

Oh, how I adore the delicious melting pot of food in this city. Every street corner brings a new culinary delight! Freshly baked bagels from a hidden bakery tucked in a quiet alley, savory pizza from a charming Italian trattoria, steaming dumplings from a bustling street vendor, and the ultimate treat – an outrageous pink raspberry milkshake at an old-fashioned diner. It’s enough to make my tummy do a happy little dance.

A Final Thought for my Lovely Pink Tutu Readers:

New York City is a constant source of inspiration. I often wonder how they manage to cram so much life into this city – the hustle and bustle, the sheer number of people, the iconic skyline that seems to touch the clouds, the breathtaking array of sights, the vibrant cultural tapestry… it's a city that is alive!

I've met some truly fantastic people, some even with a similar passion for tutus – the fashion kind, of course! New Yorkers seem to love the idea of the “Pink Tutu Movement," and I’ve even inspired a few to try a little pink tutu fun in their own unique style. It makes my heart flutter with joy – to spread the magic of the pink tutu beyond the dance studio.

And now, I'm off to conquer the next adventure. Until then, let your own creativity bloom, embrace your inner pink tutu fairy, and I'll see you next week, right here in #PinkTutuBlogNYC!

Lots of love and twirls,

Emma x
