Pink Tutu Blog: New York City - Post 204
Monday, May 3rd, 1999
Oh my dears, I'm absolutely giddy with excitement to be back in the Big Apple! I'm feeling like a whirling dervish in my favourite bubblegum pink tutu, ready to twirl my way through the streets of New York City. This is my fifth time here, but it never fails to amaze me. The energy, the vibrant culture, the endless possibilities! It’s the kind of city that inspires dreams as big and bold as a Broadway production, and you know I can't resist a little bit of that magic!
This time I've arrived with a whole new sense of adventure. I'm going to be here for a full week, exploring every nook and cranny this glorious metropolis has to offer. I've packed my favourite frocks, the most flamboyant pink shoes I could find (the pair with the iridescent feathers - you know the ones!), and, of course, a delightful selection of tutus for every occasion. I just can't imagine being anywhere else.
The Ballet Begins
It's all kicking off at the City Center tonight with a showing of Swan Lake, and I’m beyond excited. My toes are already tapping, waiting to feel that rhythm take over as soon as I see that beautiful first pas de deux. I love a good Swan Lake – the drama, the story, the beautiful choreography - just pure magic.
And speaking of magic, this afternoon was pure ballet heaven. I squeezed in a class at the Martha Graham School of Dance in the heart of Chelsea. It's my favourite studio in all of New York - the floorboards are polished to perfection, the mirrors glimmer with a sense of history, and the energy is electric. Today I worked on my pliés and chassé with a group of aspiring ballerinas who were just as passionate about ballet as I am. They all had different backgrounds, stories, and dreams. And, it really made me think - isn’t it wonderful how something as universal as ballet can connect so many people?
A Slice of Broadway Glamour
You just can't go to New York City without experiencing the glamour of Broadway. The lights, the energy, the sheer talent on stage – it's like stepping into a dreamscape! My plan for tonight is to take a backstage tour of the Theatre District - what better way to understand the magic that takes place here. I might even find myself tempted by the irresistible siren call of the souvenir shops... and that's fine with me.
Tomorrow, my darling readers, I plan to immerse myself in the New York City art scene. I hear the Met has a fabulous new exhibit, something about modern abstract sculptures and expressionist painting. I’m feeling inspired! You can't imagine the creative ideas flowing in my head just thinking about it... Perhaps I'll take my inspiration from these artists and design some tutus, in colours that reflect their works! Or maybe, just maybe, I'll inspire a new era of tutus in New York, in the heart of all this beautiful inspiration! I have a feeling we might just be entering a golden age of pink, don’t you?
Adventures on the Subway
There's just something utterly captivating about New York City's metro system. I've travelled on all the lines – from the historic Lexington Avenue Line to the modern 7 line with its views of the Hudson River – and every ride feels like an adventure. The rhythmic rumble, the cacophony of conversations, and the colourful mix of faces create an undeniable, dynamic, vibrant atmosphere. Oh, and don’t get me started on the music! You never know what musical treasures you might encounter on a metro journey. It’s so inspiring and refreshing – you really get a glimpse into the diverse rhythms of life in the city.
Of course, as much as I enjoy the city's cultural treasures and bustling streets, it wouldn't be a Pink Tutu Blog post without a little retail therapy, would it?
Pink Shopping Spree!
Today, I braved the shoppers' paradise of 5th Avenue! My dear readers, the stores in this area are beyond fabulous! And, oh my goodness, the windows, it's like a theatrical stage, showcasing the best in fashion. They've just gone and painted a huge window at the Bergdorf Goodman's into a giant hot air balloon... oh the sheer brilliance! My friend Millie tells me this season is all about feathers, floral print, and neon colours. So naturally, I spent a good couple of hours scouring for those perfect pieces for my spring wardrobe. I think I may have unearthed a new favourite outfit - a vibrant lime green linen dress, and a sequined tulle skirt in baby pink (perfect for a Broadway outing!). And, I may have also succumbed to the call of a dazzling vintage tutu... in the most amazing shades of turquoise and cherry red. It practically demanded a space in my suitcase! It is, after all, the tutu season. What are the spring colours if not a sea of colours reflecting all the amazing flowers, trees and sky? A celebration of the earth and spring! My pink heart can't say no to that, can it?
Finding the Perfect Pair of Tutus
And speaking of tutus... I just can't get enough of them! And this trip has been no exception. I’ve been making it my mission to unearth the most magnificent pink tutu creations in New York City! Now, you may think a pink tutu is a pink tutu, right? But my dears, it is not always that simple! From the fine-knit layers to the dazzling lace details, from the romantic frills to the bold colours... these tutus really make a statement, especially when paired with an amazing vintage brooch! Just think - that same tutus worn on a walk through Central Park on a bright spring day, or twirling down Broadway for an afternoon of Broadway musicals and the very essence of the city that never sleeps. This trip is all about finding the perfect tutu that is the essence of pink, New York and of my love of ballet!
Pink Dreams & Reflections
As my days in this vibrant city fly by, it feels like I’m caught in a delightful, swirling ballet performance. The streets are filled with colour, the air is infused with creativity, and the energy feels infectious. Every corner has its own little secret waiting to be discovered, and I’m determined to unearth them all. But I'm most fascinated with the pink energy of the city. There’s a boldness to pink here that doesn’t exist elsewhere. It’s a reminder of the city’s own confidence and creativity, its willingness to embrace every colour and shade, to be daring, bold and original.
New York City reminds me to be brave. To twirl my way through life with a touch of grace, to always remember that anything is possible. Just like in a ballet, it's about being graceful, and moving with intention, not about striving to be perfect. It’s about finding the perfect expression, the best version of yourself and celebrating that. Oh, the Pink Tutu Blog in New York is, if nothing else, an inspiration!
Oh, one last little piece of news! If you’re a ballet enthusiast, as I am, and if you’re looking for a theatrical escape into a whimsical world of colour, then do yourself a favour and get yourself to The Lion King on Broadway! I was fortunate enough to snag two tickets this weekend and I was spellbound by the entire show. And it's true! I am already planning my next trip to this incredible city... It really is magical, you know? Just wait until I find that new fabulous pink tutu...
Keep your toes pointed, my darling readers, and twirl your way into a great week!
Love, Emma
