Pink Tutu Blog NYC - Post #337 - 19th November, 2001

Hello lovelies! Emma here, back from the bright lights of the Big Apple with another Monday dose of pink tutu joy! Today, my diary’s filled with an overflowing pink froth of dance, theatre, and of course, a bit of retail therapy – wouldn’t be a Pink Tutu blog post without it, would it?!

For the past week, New York has been my oyster. After another successful ballet performance, I finally found myself with some free time (and an empty suitcase - you can only pack so many tutus!). It was a whirlwind of iconic landmarks, charming shops, and some absolutely incredible performances. Oh, and I think I might just have discovered my new favourite colour… it’s not pink (although, you know, it’s always going to be a close runner up!), it's the bright, shimmering, neon magenta! More on that later!

Speaking of performances, you know I always try to catch as many as I can while travelling! This week, I caught the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center, dancing Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Absolutely breathtaking, it’s impossible to resist a little sway in your seat! The Royal Ballet just arrived for a week of performances. They're at the Metropolitan Opera House - which is such a glamorous venue and the place to be seen! They always offer amazing programmes, it’s the highlight of the year for so many ballet fans!

The beauty of New York, apart from its energy, its beauty and its vibrant theatre scene, is its amazing public transport. The subway is an essential for navigating the city quickly. And nothing says "I'm on my way to ballet class" quite like hopping onto a bustling train in your pink tutu and pink ballet shoes, with your hair tied back in a sleek bun, right?! The best bit? It is seriously affordable, and an absolute bargain considering what I could spend on taxis.

And talking of taxis… the best place to hop into a cab is Times Square! Even on a dull Monday evening, it buzzes with people and light. It was like being in one of those colourful musicals you see on screen. The buildings seem to light up like a gigantic illuminated tree, especially around the festive season (which is upon us in a flash! - only 55 days to go until Christmas!), with every single one vying for your attention. It's actually a little overwhelming – all those giant flickering advertisements – so if you do venture there, make sure you take a few deep breaths! It is so dazzling!

From Times Square I made my way down Fifth Avenue - oh the shops! I took full advantage of the massive pre-Christmas sales. All the designer boutiques had slashed prices - oh, how I loved it. The Christmas decorations in the store windows really capture that spectacular New York charm - if you are ever looking for that magical winter wonderland, you've just gotta come to New York.

Of course, I also squeezed in a visit to the legendary Tiffany’s on 57th street. Can I tell you, walking through their flagship store feels a bit like stepping into a romantic movie. The window display was truly mesmerising. And I just had to see The Breakfast at Tiffany’s diamond necklace, even if I just peered through the glass, it was an incredible experience!

For dinner I hit up one of my favourite New York haunts, a charming little bistro tucked away off Bleecker Street - they do a delicious "steak frites" (French for steak and fries). I opted to finish the day with an elegant cocktail - oh I just love my fruity cocktails - they just say festive - and a spot of ballet street dancing in Washington Square Park. It’s a wonderful way to end the day in this incredibly dynamic city.

You wouldn't believe this, but this morning I was surprised with a little gift delivered to my hotel. My friend Emily sent me a gift - I am so lucky! I was so thrilled when the concierge arrived at the door carrying the most beautiful magenta tulle ballet tutu! I've said it before, but tulle is really having a fashion moment! If I had any doubts, that was swiftly swept aside.

And speaking of fashion, I’ve gotta talk about the most beautiful, exquisite, vintage magenta pink tutu I found yesterday at a hidden little shop tucked away off the bustling streets of SoHo. I literally gasped when I saw it! It was the perfect fit! I am already planning my outfit and will be modelling it soon for you. Watch this space!

Anyway, that was my Monday - a hectic schedule full of dazzling shows, fun activities, some indulgent retail therapy and, of course, tutu fun! Keep following the Pink Tutu Blog - there’s plenty more to come, from the exciting world of ballet and beyond. Remember: never stop dreaming in pink.

Much love,

Emma, your favourite Pink Tutu blogger

Disclaimer: My trips to NYC and beyond are made possible by my work as a freelance dancer. This includes but is not limited to professional performances, workshops, private tuition, and, occasionally, ballet themed events. As with every dance career, it requires dedication, a passion for dance and an unquenchable thirst to share the art of dance and dance’s impact on a global scale.
