Pink Tutu Blog NYC: #350 - New York, New York, It's a Ballet Lover's Dream!

Monday, 18th February 2002

Hello my darling dears! I hope you're all having a splendid week so far.

This week, it's all about New York, New York! My darling Pink Tutu, she's danced her way into the Big Apple this time, and let me tell you, the energy here is electric! I simply adore this city. It's buzzing with life, laughter, and all sorts of excitement - not to mention the incredible ballet scene!

Now, as you know, I'm a big believer in embracing the pink, the fabulous, and all things tutu! So, naturally, I couldn't come to New York without rocking my favourite pink tulle number. You wouldn't believe the attention I've gotten! It's like a mini-fashion show every time I step onto the subway. Honestly, I think I've just about single-handedly boosted the city's pink tutu quotient tenfold!

Speaking of the subway, darling, it's an adventure in itself! A constant stream of humanity, everyone going about their day with such urgency and purpose. And I'm right there in the midst of it all, swirling my pink tutu, bringing a little bit of joy to everyone's day. I love observing the people, their outfits, the stories I imagine behind their hurried steps, I feel I’m a little piece of London, floating through a Manhattan maze. It's the perfect way to experience the true heart of New York.

My New York itinerary this week is jam-packed, of course, and wouldn't you know it, today happens to be a day of double-duty delights! Firstly, I’m absolutely thrilled to be attending the "Sleeping Beauty" performance at the New York City Ballet. It's at the stunning Lincoln Center, which I must say is a work of art in itself. And imagine, I even had the privilege of meeting a young ballerina after the performance – her name is Clara, a rising star, you’ve got to keep an eye on her! I felt an immediate connection to her passion and excitement. What's so fabulous about the ballet world is how we’re all like a big, wonderful family, regardless of age or where in the world we happen to be!

After that incredible experience, it was onto another adventure, and a complete change of pace: a late night performance at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. Talk about a night to remember! I felt transported to a completely different world. They say that La MaMa was a hub for so many important, legendary artists over the years – artists like Harvey Fierstein, Allen Ginsberg, and, wow, this really is a biggie, even a very young Bette Midler – you wouldn't believe what these folks were creating and presenting to the world right here in the East Village, you could almost touch the raw, unadulterated creative energy swirling through the place!

Honestly, darlings, New York never disappoints. You truly never know what awaits around every corner. There’s so much to see and do and, naturally, I'm documenting it all – even my rather interesting, and rather delicious, dinner experience tonight at the little cafe with the big heart: Cafe Wha?. You'll have to catch all that in my next post, as I simply can’t tell you all just yet!

And that brings us to the highlight of my New York journey: SHOPPING!

Now, as you know, I’m a bit of a fashionista – what’s a pink tutu girl to do in a city like this?! My feet have been dragging me from one shop to the next. You've heard of the ‘Golden Mile’, the ‘Silver Mile’, well let me introduce you to the ‘Pink Mile’, right here in the city that never sleeps! I’ve just about spent all of the pennies from my ballet performances!

I found a simply divine pink sequined handbag at a vintage boutique on the Upper East Side, just perfect to add that extra touch of sparkle to any outfit. I simply couldn’t resist it. As I said, my handbag situation here is about to explode – I’m about to give my apartment the makeover we’ve all been waiting for - I need to think how many beautiful handbags it’ll accommodate. And then there was this exquisite pastel pink silk scarf in Chinatown, just perfect for adding a touch of Parisian elegance, even when you’re hopping from one pink, glitter-filled carousel to another! You wouldn’t believe the fashion treasures I’ve found, my darling dears – but I can't give away all my secrets, you'll just have to follow me for those…

But, of course, the best part of New York is always the people. There is an incredible energy in this city. You just have to be open to the possibility, to the serendipity, to the excitement that comes from this place. I’ve already made so many friends - such amazing souls! You know I just love the sparkle and energy that New York brings out in people. They say that this city is an island of opportunity, a hotbed of creativity and adventure, and this is where my pink tutu is definitely ready to explore. You may have to forgive me when my blog goes silent for a few weeks, I think I’ve lost my heart here. The people of this great city are starting to really believe that, if I can get one more person to don a pink tutu, it will change the world, the world’s energy is shifting here.

Anyway, enough about my grand adventures for now, my darling dears! I need to go prepare for another whirlwind day. Stay tuned next week for all the fabulous updates. Until then, don't forget: pink is the new black, and a little bit of tutu goes a long way!

Much love,
Emma x
