Pink Tutu Blog: New York City Edition - Post #427

Monday, 11th August 2003

Hello darlings!

This is Emma from the heart of Derbyshire, but this week I'm writing to you from the vibrant, ever-bustling city that never sleeps – New York City! I know you're wondering, what's a girl in a pink tutu doing in New York City? Well, my lovelies, my pink tutu and I have come to the Big Apple to soak up the energy, the culture, the fashion, the incredible ballet scene and to, of course, share our experiences with you all.

This is my fourth visit to this fantastic metropolis, and each time I fall in love with it all over again. There’s a sense of excitement in the air that makes your heart race, an endless stream of colourful personalities, and a truly inspiring creative vibe. Oh, and the shopping, the food, the architecture – New York City, you simply never disappoint.

Now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. As you all know, this blog is all about embracing life's beautiful moments, adding a dash of pink to everything, and twirling through our days with joy and a little bit of magic. That's exactly what I've been doing here in NYC!

A Ballet Lover's Paradise

I knew this trip was going to be something special, especially after landing right in the middle of the prestigious New York City Ballet Summer Season. Talk about an absolute dream come true! This year's programme has been full of classical and contemporary masterpieces, including George Balanchine's Agon, which has captivated me from the moment I saw the first movement. The costumes were a whirlwind of geometric designs and vibrant colours, and the choreography was incredibly dynamic and exhilarating – oh, to be able to move with such grace and precision!

I even got the opportunity to catch a special performance of Jerome Robbins' "Other Dances". The piece had such a distinct, powerful story and a stunning use of lighting. It made me want to step into the world of the stage and be a part of something so raw and impactful. And of course, what visit to the city would be complete without seeing the spectacular American Ballet Theatre? I managed to catch a captivating performance of Swan Lake and the entire theatre was buzzing with excitement!

Adventures in the Pink Tutu

I can’t even tell you how much fun it’s been wearing my pink tutu on the subway! The locals all seem quite charmed by my little ensemble. You'd think I was royalty being escorted to the theatre! The friendly smiles and the waves of acknowledgement, along with the occasional "fabulous, darling!" shouted from a passing taxi make this tutu-wearing New Yorker feel truly welcome. It’s like I’m living out my fairytale, and New York City is providing the perfect setting.

My New York journey has included all the essentials: walking across the Brooklyn Bridge (which I highly recommend, it’s truly spectacular, especially at sunset) with the twinkling lights of Manhattan in the background. I indulged in a scrumptious brunch at a quaint little cafe in Greenwich Village, where the smell of freshly baked pastries was intoxicating. The vibrant street art of Soho, the impressive skyline view from Top of the Rock… I even managed to squeeze in a little retail therapy at Bloomingdale’s! Oh, the delights of being a girl on a girly getaway!

The Big Apple Bite

Oh, my goodness, the food scene in New York is pure bliss. Last night I stumbled upon a hidden gem: a little Italian trattoria tucked away in Little Italy, called "La Piazza". I absolutely devoured a creamy, cheesy Lasagna Bolognese with a glass of Chianti. Honestly, every mouthful was pure heaven! And don’t even get me started on the New York bagels and lox - that’s definitely on my must-have list for every visit. The city's mix of cultural cuisines truly is an adventure for the senses!

Making Every Day a Performance

Of course, life is not just about attending ballets and eating pastries! There is also a vibrant and thriving street dance scene in NYC. My exploration has included checking out some of the most incredible breakdancing groups, hip hop dance battles and street performances in Times Square. They were pure energy, filled with joy, skill, and of course, some incredibly innovative choreography. Seeing them move with such incredible agility and raw power makes you feel like anything is possible.

Being in New York, I’ve been taking every opportunity to move my body. I found the cutest ballet studio in the East Village where I took a couple of drop-in classes to really get those legs and arms moving. It felt fantastic to be back in the studio surrounded by the magic of movement.

Tutu Time!

Don't worry my lovelies, my passion for tutus remains as strong as ever. I am convinced that the power of a pink tutu lies not only in its beauty but also in its ability to bring joy, confidence, and a little bit of playful magic to every step you take.

I hope to inspire all of you to wear a pink tutu. Yes, you read that right! Embrace the inner ballerina, the joyful you! Even if you’re just twirling around your living room, it’s guaranteed to boost your mood and unleash that hidden dancer within. And who knows, maybe someday we can all gather together for a massive, pink-tutu-filled dance party!

Until next Monday

I am truly enjoying my stay here in New York City. It's been a whirlwind of experiences, inspiring ballet performances, fantastic shopping, and mouth-watering culinary discoveries. It's been wonderful sharing these adventures with you all. I will be sure to document more of my New York adventures in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned for my next post! Until then, embrace your inner dancer, and always remember that the world is your stage.

Keep it pink and keep twirling!

**Love,

Emma**
